How does SOUL absorption truly work? A monster absorbs a human soul and, somehow, their physical form is altered. But what if a human absorbed a boss monster soul? Would their form somehow change as well? Would it be painful? There's a lot of things to wonder here...

Snapp Monsters have little physical matter and are mostly just souls given form with magic. Therefore it's likely that monsters actually can theoretically change shape at will, it's just that it's tremendously hard for them to do so, at least without the massive power from a human soul. After all, wasn't there a monster that constantly rearranged it's face? A human taking a boss monster soul would probably just enable them to use magic. They probably wouldn't change shape, since they're much more "solid" than monsters. Altough they could add onto their existing body with magic the same way monster bodies exist, like sprouting wings or goat ears or something. This wouldn't hurt though, since they'd be doing this consciously (or semi-consciously, if their thoughts at absorbing the soul controlled what would change).

About Undyne... Determination saves her in the first hit of the genocide run, and I do not think she gets saved by it because she is phisically strong, but I think she gets saved because she's ALIVE. Think about it: the amalgamates melt down because they're dead and they have no energy that they could use to "activate" determination. And what happens to Undyne in the genocide run after you finally kill her in her final form? She Melts, because she can't use determination anymore. I think this is more interesting than it actually seems, and I think it has something to do with Gaster (probably...)

This was going so well until you mentioned Gaster. He's a spoiled secret. Here's my definition of determination: Determination (deter-min-ation) When you're determined to do something. That's pretty much determination. You can be determined to do good or evil. Undyne was determined to kill you in the genocide route, hence Undyne the Undying. "The real world meaning has little relevance" No, it's the same thing. If you're determined to do something, you'll end up doing it no matter what (if you are actually determined, that is. Don't use it so lightly)

the book in the library said humans are made of water, so since Undyne is the water boss she might be made of water while the other waterfall monsters aren't, so she can have determination. Here's my theory: Determination may be only accquired if that entity is "filling it's purpose" like the meaning of the word itself. You will notice that when monsters die, they immediately lose hope in living. For Papyrus, it's different. He believed in you not in living. Undyne however wanted to do what was right, what she must do. This is why humans keep living on. It's because they don't give up, like what determination is. But remember, it's just a theory! Determination as simply explained is basically the opposite of entropy, it can undo what the ravages of time have done, before the whole Gaster mess or barrier mess it probably just helped undo death of the holder for a short amount of time, and keep humans going in the war, and due to something...? it was able to pull a SOUL back to an earlier point in time.

This was an interesting video, but I believe determination as we see it in undertail is a representation of what we see in real life. The perserverence, patience, integrity, and/or kindness to see something through to the end. Humans are unique because they are able to harness it better than any monster in most circumstances, but, if it is justified, it can still be harnessed by monsters like Undyne or Sans, as we see in the genocide path. They know what you did, and by remembering their friends, they can harness more determination than under normal circumstances

I always thought that the reason Undyne can use this Determination is because she has some Determination, but not too much. However the amalgamates had too much Determination, as Alphys had kept on injecting them with Determination when nothing happened to them after the first shots. If she had stopped after the first shot, they might have been fine.

The reason it's called "Determination" in addition to what is covered in this video, is probably the pun in the word: de-termination, as in non-termination, or non-death, which means it makes you not die. That makes it the perfect thing to name this mysterious power which makes you able to save and reload. It actually makes a ton of sense when you think about it huh..

Maybe Undyne could use DT because she was still alive. The other monsters Alphys experimented on were dead, and couldn't control it properly. Therefore they misused it, and caused their bodies to melt. This could also explain why Undyne melts in the genocide and neutral. She misuses DT by trying to use it too much to keep her alive, therefore causing her body to be unstable. Just a theory, but still could be a possibility.

I would imagine that a monster can handle determination in a human soul even though they can't by itself because the human soul dilutes it on the way out and acts as a catalyst of control. As for Undyne, I imagine the reason she could control her own determination was because it was hers. It was determination, but it wasn't hyper concentrated like that of what would be extracted from a human soul. It was within a safe level for monsters (in particular a strong one like her), kind of like how you can overdose on a drug if you have too much. Plus it can be argued that if you just died after being killed and Undyne beat you on a geno route, that she would melt shortly afterwards anyways. Kind of like how it took the amalgamates a while to actually melt down after they were injected considering Alphys was about ready to send them all home before they melted.

Katherine Phillips The game states humans cannot express themselves with magic. I interpret this to mean that humans can't invent or discover magic / spells. This basically means magic almost entirely comes from monsters. Having sealing them away, magic use likely became taboo, to dissociate humans from monsters, and eventually became a lost art.

AkaiAzul That's what I meant by 'went into hiding'. And I actually think that humans CAN use magic, but that ability is unlocked by prolonged exposure to magic. When monsterkind was sealed underground, humans lost the ability to use it because without monsters they couldn't unlock that ability anymore(monsters were the source of all magic on the surface). Plus, magic was seen as a taboo and all that shiz so combined with everything I've already said, magic was wiped from the surface world.

Yes, Undyne is a boss in the game, but a "boss monster" is a specific species of monsters that are more powerful than others (A LOT more powerful, as in "Undyne's stats are 20/10 while Asgore's 80/80" powerful), allowing their soul to exist without their body for a few seconds after death. The only "boss monsters" in the game are Toriel, Asgore and Asriel. You can see the proof of this, as when Asgore and Toriel are dead, their soul floats for a few seconds before also breaking. Undyne's soul doesn't do this.

I think Undyne was given some DETERMINATION by Alphys because it would make sense that Alphys would want to save her crush. I think Alphys just gave her a much smaller amount than what she gave the Amalgamates. At first the Amalgamates were fine, they didn't melt until the day after when they were suppose to go home. So we can assume that with a smaller amount, Undyne would have even more time before she melted. Though we can also assume that because Alphys watched Frisk travel through the Underground and kill everyone, she knew how powerful the human was and knew Undyne probably wouldn't win. So the DETERMINATION would give her a little bit of a fighting chance. She probably knew Undyne would die, but her having a boost of DETERMINATION, thus prolonging the fight, would give everyone else more time to evacuate.

the song when you fight Undyne before Battle Against A True Hero is called But The Earth Refused To Die (or similar) so maybe although other monsters died the reason it didnt work on them was because they didnt need to live while Undyne was needed or existence itself wouldnt exist in that timeline aka Undyne wasnt actually the one to cause the determination and never was injected it was the monsters who knew it was happening and the life outside (animals, plants and other things btw humans are animals) not knowing (sortof though trees could feel the earth shake and cats and dogs can be terrified of thunder and ye) or sortof like talking between eachother without knowing and it used the magic of magical things and determination of determined things (and detemmination of temmie things) using their powers together to help Undyne but couldnt because a human who thought it was just a game decided they wanted to *commit mass genocide* and the human lost control of Frisk once they ruined alot of lives and Frisk had to *sell their soul* to fix what you did and theyl *never* know that nobody will have truly happy lives *ever* again

It seems all monsters possess determination because it is a will to live, without a will to live you dont live. That is why Flowey came to life, he was given a will to live. A will to live seems like it is conscience because plants are alive, but lack DT. It may also be that humans have a tiny sliver of magic because originally Toby was going to add a ,a magic button in battles but it was removed.

Your video made me think of a theory - Humans and Monsters were once one and the same, where the only difference was the souls, and the war was over (Toby Fox said what it was over), and they both used to be able to handle both DETERMINATION and Magic, but when the Monsters were sealed Underground, the two species evolved and got rid of their unneeded traits (magic and DETERMINATION, which is why humans used to be able to use Magic.

Determintation in my opinion is the keeping on, unlike persaverance tho, you understand and welcome defeat while treading on (as oppose to where persavercance is when you keep trying after being put down or out matched) . If you think about it, none of the amalgamates expliciey wanted to come back because they were already dead, Frisk and Undyne on the other hand, understand that they are about to die but they keep going at death, pushing against what they know is happening.

Here's something to think about. In Undertale, it's said that monster souls are unable to live on past death with the exception of "Boss Monsters". For some reason, Boss Monsters have stronger souls and are able to live on. I don't think there's doubt in anyone's find that Undyne is indeed a Boss Monster. Perhaps, because her soul is stronger, she's able to contain the Determination unlike the other monsters which, I must remind you, are not boss monsters.

I did a double take when you said that Alphys gave dying monsters determination so they could continue to live on, and the next step was likely to make monsters powerful enough to cross through the barrier without the aid of a human soul. The entries in the true lab make the actual plan very clear and it wasn't that: The plan was to make it so monster /souls/, which normally disappear instantly(with the exception of boss monsters but even their souls persist for only a few seconds longer), could persist long enough after death to be absorbed by a vessel. Since souls couldn't be artificially created, she was basically trying to use what they had to gain enough power to break the barrier. The dying monsters returning to life after enough Determination was injected was an unintended side effect.

Undyne is practically a boss monster and the most aggressive when the human meets her and her strength coming from those who she protects and the most human like monster in the underground would have the biggest impact on her ability to use determination without melting

A thing that you might have forgotten, is that the monsters injected with DT, one, have fallen down and two, it took them a couple of days to start melting together. Alphys might have assessed the situation and given Undyne a shot of DT, when she saw the human commit Genocide

4:26 Actually you got this part slightly wrong... Alphys didn't want to ressurect/make the dying monster she recieved live longer. In the True Lab entries it says that she wanted to make their souls last after the bodies turn to dust (normally monster souls are destroyed together with their bodies) so she can use these souls in place of human souls to destroy the barrier. However, it went the other way around. They didn't turn to dust. Being desperate Alphys kept injecting them with more and more DT (maybe that's why Undyne is able to hold herself together? Because she has a bit of it while the amalgamates are litterary made of it?). At some point they woke up only to melt into the amalgamates after a while. (sorry for the Wall of text...)

Only boss monsters can absorb human souls as stated in the game I think if any boss monster was treated with determination it would either take longer to melt or would be in agony but stay alive. I think this is how Asriel survived all those blows combined with charas determination when they went to the surface

I have a major clue on how Undyne can be so determined without instantly melting. In the library, it does mention that in comparison to monsters with magic, humans are mostly water. Fish have more water in their bodies than people, and Undyne is a fish monster. Maybe water acts like a glue to determination, and the higher amount of water in your body, the more determination you can hold. (Kinda like salt dissolving in water, but with determination.)

Like the Force of Star Wars or TTGL's Spiral Energy, it empowers objects with properties beyond their basic natures and natural limits, and turns an already living thing into a being of near-deific power. It is deeply connected with the will to make things go one's way, and it's that reason it bears a name with meaning similar to perseverance- the will to endure. This definition also explains why Monsters melt in its force. It is fact that Monsters are made of materials that are not necessarily physical. Whatever it is, the properties seem to be that it is much less solidly tangible, and therefore able to change much faster than physical flesh and bone and whatever else. What then if a force of change like Determination enters such a form? Determination doesn't seem to care who directs it and simply follows the will of the one containing it, so by injecting a Monster with human levels of determination, every thought and desire running through them is charged with the will to make things go one's way. The easily altered magical material that makes up that Monster's body quickly bows to the power of Determination, and the great strain of trying to act in all mental directions at once reduced them to malleable, undefined goo. Try playing Surgeon Simulator at your mouse's maximum sensitivity setting, and you'll get an experience not dissimilar, just on a macroscopic scale instead of down to your very molecules and particles.

Make a theory about Alphys' role on the genocide route! She evacuated everyone to supposedly the True Lab (but I think that could be unlikely because she would have to expose her secrets to the families) and also she meant to call Asgore and tell him to absorb the 6 human souls which he never did (maybe because there's no signal near the castle?). And since Asgore wasn't expecting you, that begs the question why Alphys didn't inform him and also Asgore tells us Flowey warned him about you, yet he still is caught off guard (or perhaps Flowey just told him he should be expecting a visitor).

Going back to the point of undyne and determination... I have a feeling that her soul is unstable due to similar experiments that created the amalgimates. I have this idea because she doesn't just fade into dust like all other monsters during the neutral or genocide route. Instead, she starts to melt in a similar way to which the amalgimates were created before turning to dust.

I think boss monsters can survive with determination if really needed because Undyne only melts in the neutral route, because determination is not as much needed.Like the theory that Sans gave himself determination.Which is possible because they both have strange eyes.I hope this idea sorta makes sense.

Cool video, I just want to note that in my opinion the only reason Frist is able to take back control over the timeline from Flowly is because when he feel he managed to fall on top of Chara's grave, absorbing her soul and her determination, 2 souls of determination in my opinion overwhelmed Flowlys control. Underlabs, may I ask, what do you think of the theory that the reason you were able to 'defeat' Asriel and make him revert and everything is because of Chara? The basic theory of it is that we returned everyone by sharing memories with the characters, however we don't have any memories of Asriel, the closest we got is memories of Flowly and they aren't good, yet Asriel's memories returned, and we just had a flash back to Chara being found by Asriel, and that triggered it

I actually thought of timelines before undertale, i always thought when someone thinks of something to do, the main timeline keeps going but other timelines are made (i called it other universes because i was 5 at the time when i clearly meant timelines xD) Edit: Just watched the "Do all 3 undertale routes happen at once?" theory and i guess it was universe.

in the true lab the entries say that at first given determination the monsters dident melt right there and then but they melted after time. so im guessing that undyne melts after a long time of fighting

I think there's another interesting fact about determination is that it is nearly sure the determination extractor is created by Dr. Gaster instead of Dr. Alphys (as she said she use the blueprint to control the machine). But in a lab entry, Alphys has mentioned that she has thought the idea of extracting the energy makes human SOULs strong and injects it into monsters. So what is the reason for Gaster to create the DT extractor? If we consider that one of his followers said his talent is irreplaceable and his ultra-high stats (66666HP, 6666ATK, and 6666DEF), is that possible in addition to extracting determination and injecting into monsters, he has also figured out the way to control it without being melted down? Also, one of his followers said he dropped into his own creation and shattered, this hypothesis may explain his end: after Gaster inject determination into himself, he became very strong. But one day, he accidentally fell into the DT extractor, and the determination he injected into himself in drawn out. This process may cause harm to his SOUL and thus his SOUL eventually cracked and then shattered.

So, here's my little scientific teory: Determination is the undertale equivalent of Dopamine, a sostance that keeps us determinated to live on. Dopamine also regulates our happiness/sadness levels: when we do something we like, we get exited and dopamine is relised in the brain, when we feel sad and beaten down, there's a dopamine lack and as you may think, a large lack of dopamine creates depression. The living after death and time things are like a way to say "a person, if determinated enough, can do that". For Undyne, the will to live on created Dopamine/determination, so much that she melted because of it. And that's all, I guess :v

possibly the amalgamates melted together when getting determination was because they where dying and so when the determination tried to reform there dying bodies after they had been dead for a while things went horribly wrong but since undyne was alive and well way before this she could have taken determination and survived

Perhaps the monsters only melt when they are dying with Determination? Like, instead of being able to save monsters just don't die. All Alphys' test subjects we're all fallen. Undyne might have had it the whole time and just wasn't ready to die. When she is ready to die, she starts melting. When she realizes that it's not her time, she returns to normal. If I'm right, a monster could gain enough DT to match that of a human and cross the Barrier as themself, but once they're​ supposed to die they'd melt.

In Undyne's case it is likely that determination takes a while to melt monsters down, as when she dies she begins to melt before turning to dust.

With the topic of Undyne's DETERMINATION, There is this. Alphys didn't just inhect it into the dying monsters once, she kinda over-did it. She overwhelmed them. Undyne could have been given small amounts of DETERMINATION and that's why she has it but doesn't melt and fuse with others. Just an idea, but still an interesting thought.

My theory is that anyone, or anything can have determination. The determined creature must meet certain requirements, however. For example, Frisk wants to leave the underground. Undyne wants to stop you on the genocide run. Flowey doesn't want to die. Unlike others, they want this with a passion. This could mean that determination is more centered around passion. Also, because the monsters in the true lab weren't truly, fully passionate, they failed to properly use determination. Also also, that's why Undyne melts in her true death. She feels as if she can do nothing more to stop you. Because of this, she loses her control over her determination. (Not very) Simple and easy.
