Though a lot of background is fake I do believe the city in the Ruins is real. After all, all the monsters used to live in the ruins so it makes sense to have a city in there. Although, then it makes you wonder how they left. Did all the monsters have to travel through Toriel 's house or was there another way that was blocked off once everyone left.
@thecitrine16757 жыл бұрын
HidanKitten32 well the ruins are all but abandoned, a replica of new home

Isn't new home a replica of the ruins? Considering the Ruins was the first and only place the monsters lived until they left? Yes the ruins is abandoned but the city inside it is real, I think

Maybe the abandoned buildings there are where toriel gets her snails for her snail pie from! We never see them... where we are able to look... >♡

The city behind is indeed the ruins city, and the new home/capital are replica of the ruins. You can't access it because toriel probably removed the way to that place since nobody lives there anymore
@jem48305 жыл бұрын
Toriel left for the Ruins after Asriel died, so I assume that her home didn't exist until long after all the monsters had left the city. Although, the fact that Froggit and Whimsum and all of the other random encounters in the Ruins are still there makes me think that some monsters stayed in the city, if only a couple.

I still do think the caverns are fairly bigger than just a small cave the size of a theme park. Why? Weather. There is weather in the Underground, which isn't possible without air circulation like on the surface. But it does snow and rain, so there IS air circulation, it's big enough to allow that. There are caverns in real life that are so big, they have their own weather, clouds and all. I think the further you go, the deeper the caverns become, allowing for lots of room and also it wouldn't be that easy to harness energy from magma if Hotland wasn't the deepest area. Also Snowdin Forest likely isn't a decoy or an illusion, because when you go to the door inside the forest and look down at the cliff right next to it, you can see a tiny house in the middle of the forest and someone actually comes out of it, walks around and goes back in. There's smoke too. I think it's the real deal, the caverns are hella big. I think the problem isn't the size of the caverns, there's plenty of room but the settlement isn't dispersed equally, like on the surface. Cities are packed full of people while rural areas/forests go emptier. Or maybe monsters aren't able to live in the cold damp forest or the frypan lava paradise because they aren't as durable as humans, biologically and on a molecular level. Anyway I think the real problem is resources. Monsters can't last forever without the sun and the lush harvests it brings, they need it as much as we do. Or maybe there isn't enough oxygen or clean water.
@glasspicaro7 жыл бұрын
Selin Naz all of that is wrong. let me science soem shit. Sur Son Doong is a cave in Vietnam and is the largest known cave in the world, it’s carved out by a river eroding the limestone. It is 9 kilometers long, going deeper and deeper, with holes in the ceiling that allow sunlight to shine in growing entire forests with vegetation. just like the hole you fall into in Undertale. The cavern is so large that clouds form inside it, causing it to have its own dynamic weather systems, it’s entirely possible that such a cave in a colder location could have snow form and fall inside the cave. Of course, if such a cave managed to erode past the limestone layer and reach a volcanic vein, such a location like Hotland could indeed exist. so caves like the one in undertale already exist.

Yet another example of where fact is stranger then fiction. Another thing to keep in mind is there are edibles that rely on darkness, such as mushrooms and certain other types of edible fungus. I'd imagine any society forced to live underground for long periods would adapt their agriculture to fungus farms as a major source of nutrition, and considering they're able to make technology like the CORE and lasers and such, they could also make hydroponics to supplement their diets with surface any surface crops they can manage to get seeds for and grow hydroponically. The CORE shows they have access to the technology, ingenuity and resources to accomplish that. As for the crowding into New Home, given the conditions of the other major biomes they have to choose from, it's not surprising most would choose New Home, which seems to be one of the only 2 temperate biomes available to them, the other being the ruins, which were, of course, locked by Toriel after the death of Asriel. So only New Home is left as a viable temperate biome. The rest are arctic Snodin, swampland of Waterfall and super-heated desert/badlands of Hotland. Remember what happened to Undyne when she chases Frisk into Hotland, she collapses from severe heat exhaustion/stroke almost immediately. Many others would also have similar problems from the heat. The extreme cold would be just as bad for many other monsters too. That was part of what trapped the Spiders in the Ruins is that the Snodin climat would kill them. I'm sure we can all imagine how long a Vulcin could last in Snowdin before getting severe hypothermia, or Waterfall's extreme wet for that matter. Or how long a Snowdrake could last in Hotland before suffering a similar fate to Undyne.
@selinnazsur23287 жыл бұрын
+Romeo Fain That was exactly what I was talking about, dude. Underground is a cavern most similar to Sur Son Doong. I don't know why you said what I said was wrong if we are telling the same thing...
@selinnazsur23287 жыл бұрын
+Jason Ross The last part was what I was saying by "monsters aren't able to live in the cold damp forest or the frypan lava paradise because they aren't as durable as humans, biologically and on a molecular level". We have seen a lot of elemental monsters that would die in biomes with conditions opposite to theirs. Humans could survive because we obviously do even in real life, our bodies are more complex and tightly built than a monster's, especially the elemental ones. Plus we got used to surviving. New Home and Ruins seem to be closer to the surface than the other parts, being the start and end of the caverns. The deepest area must be Hotland because magma, Snowdin is understandibly cold because cavern=no sun, and Waterfall is mild and damp because it's in between. As for the plants, they do have plants growing in the Underground that would probably die off/adapt and look different without the sun, like the cactus in Toriel's room. Cacti would grow bigger leaves without the sun, yet they look the same...? Or the Golden Flowers, maybe. Or the typha. Typha needs full sunlight to grow. It's strange how they can grow some of these plants, but they do anyway.

I think we're only shown a portion of the Underground. Remember that monsters ruled earth alongside humans once; The population might have matched the humans. Maybe the monsters built the kingdom like ants do: instead of keeping the kingdom just under the mountain, maybe they dug deeper and deeper? I know Undertale Yellow isn't canon, but I liked the idea that Justice fell deeper into a whole new side of the Ruins that we've never seen. Maybe the Underground is like that; branches and tunnels leading off deeper into the ground, so that the vast population of monsters we never see can thrive without it being too crowded. The Ruins boasted a colossal kingdom where the monsters of the Ruins live, but maybe it doesn't end there: Maybe there are new hallways in the places we can't access, that lead to different places! We're given a specific route through Undertale according to where we fell and what directions we were obligated to take. We walked through the Ruins to Snowdin, from Snowdin to Waterfall, from Waterfall to Hotland, through the Core, and then to the Castle. It's very specific, but it can't be limited to just that! I think there is so much more to the Underground we've never seen, important characters we've never met, dangerous puzzles we've never tried. At least, I like to think so.
@glasspicaro7 жыл бұрын
Not Trustworthy No. remember most of monster kind was killed in the monster human war. the remaining monsters lived in the ruins until it became to crowded and they moved deeper into the carvern. considering they hit lava that must mean they are already pretty far down. so digging deeper is almost impossible.

I mean for all we know, Asgore could've had some sort of mining team to help expand the area of the Underground, after all if it truly was so small then I have little doubt there would probably be a designated team who would help excavate the surrounding areas in order to make the Underground bigger, perhaps getting rid of excess rocks and dirt by throwing it into the lava in Hotlands

Though I'm curious if there's a range on how far down or outward you can dig. There's still the barrier. I wonder if it closes of that one area by the throne room or it surrounds a significant portion of the entire mountain. If it's the second option then there might be a certain distance out you can dig before you reach barrier. If not, they could potentially dig themselves out. (They could also theoretically get out where Frisk and other humans fell in unless there's a barrier there too.)

Hello Underlab! Although I mostly agree on your conclusion, there is one thing that doesn't seem to add up. There's snow in Snowdin. not just ice, but snow that's fresh enough to allow the skelebros to make snowmen. I've heard that a possible explanation could be that in very large caves a whole ecosystem can exist -if they're large enough. What do you think? does this mean snowdin must have a high ceiling or something? Maybe Snowdin's snow would be a good subject for a future video or something?

It would make you wonder if that's true. If the monster population wasn't that large to begin with (Or the genocide was highly effective.) then there likely weren't other undergrounds. Then if there are other undergrounds, what are their states of being or how many exist? Might be possible the underground we play in is the largest and most advanced and all the others are smaller and/or much worse off. did anyone forget that the core is directly under new home? that means when you see newhome from waterfall and the core from hotland, your probably stand in about the same place, just lower in the underground. this means that hotland is under new home and waterfall. when going through waterfall, we go downward deeper into mt Ebott, finally when you face off against Undyne, behind her is a smaller cave that leads under new home. the underground has 3 levels to it. each level is deeper then the last. this explains why theirs lava in hotland. you must go far underground to reach it. we can assume mt. ebott is an inactive volcano, which explains it's shape and the size of the cave inside it. trees grow there because of the ashes that are in the ground. it has greatly cooled explaining the build up of snow, it starts to melt the closer you get to the bottom of the underground which has tons of lava in it. as far as it goes, the ruins are under snowdin, snowdin is next to waterfall, which is on top of hotland just outside of new home. (this explains why Undyne can live here.) because what royal guard captain would live on the other side of a lava pit if its really close bye. anyway. hotland is below new home, another good chance is that the ruins and new home are right next to each other, because it's odd they abandon an entire city just to build an exact replica of it across a cave. so in that way, the underground is tiny. mt ebott is probably the size of mt st Helen (they look similar too) just look up mt st Helen and check out the size of it. that is how big the underground probably is.

25 x 25 miles (or 40 x 40 km for the rest of us) Is still pretty big and would take a long time to fully explore on foot especially when that consists of broken up spaces like caves, forests and urban areas (which are in the caves). Wait, Papyrus _painted_ that bridge? I'm not convinced of that, because the bridge parallaxes with the background. The city in New Home also parallaxes as you walk by it. Keep in mind that you pass WAY more monsters than houses. There are numerous school kids by the CORE, which implies that there's a school somewhere. In other words, there are almost definitely building that you never interact with. There seems to be entire towns that you never see. All of those hundreds (thousands?) of monsters need to live _somewhere_, right? If there really were only a few houses in total, they would be PACKED. Sans and Papyrus wouldn't be allowed the luxury of a middle-class house all to themselves, I wouldn't think. If space really was THAT sparse, would the monsters really give up "Home" so easily, and let it fall into ruins? I would think that they'd bust down that door and reclaim some of that living space. Food. Yeah, monster food is weird, but they still HAVE food, and lots of it. That requires crops. That requires farming, which requires farm land of some kind. It's probably done with hydroponics via the power of the CORE, but we never see a single garden, much less enough fields to sustain a multi-thousand monster population. Okay, there's the snail farm, but we only see a few actual snails. I doubt that "farm" could sustain Toriel, much less the entire population. (besides, every other monster seems to be a vegan. Why ARE the royal family members the only monsters who eat another animal as food. Do you think they poop?) Sorry, but Underland really is FAR more expansive than the monsters want you to know about.

Hold on there, Underlab. There's a background outside of the Mystery Door area (I think) where you can see a little monster in the distance running back and forth from a tiny house. That can't be just a painted background, can it? That part really made me want to go over there and meet him and feel frustrated that I just can't. the population of on-screen monsters is something around this Ruins population -- 23 monsters Snowdin population -- 35 monsters (about 55 at the end of TP) Waterfall population -- 34 monsters (about 44 at the end of TP) Hotland + CORE population -- 59 monsters (About 68 at the end of TP) Amalgamates -- 67 monsters (amalgamated together, 0 after TP) Misc -- 3 monsters (Napstablook, ASGORE, Flowey) Total metioned/on-screen monsters: 221 monsters

The walking distance from the end of the world to the start is about 20 minutes, so im guessing that's about, like, a kilometer based on google maps. Including all of the scenery and city we see, it's probably less than 10 km2 in total. And Frisk walks at a preety average speed, since she walks a triple/double sized bed (toriel's room) in about half a second.

Do a theory about how there are so many different species of monsters. I mean, they started out as a crowd of survivors from the war as said in the non-anime history books, and they eventually grew, but how were new species of monsters created?

another thing that might support your theory is the newspaper. they say that there is so little that goes on in the underground, that they just fill the newspaper with games also a monster mentions that the biggest and only star in underground has a fanclub with only 36(?) members. which is very small for the number one star of an entire community, perhaps this pertains to the size of the population as well there is also the underground river that spans through most of the underground, carrying blocks of ice from snowdin to hotlands without the ice melting. i would think this would be very small as well.

I've always liked the idea that the Underground was a big place, maybe not as big as London or anything but big enough that it would take days or weeks to actually go through the entire place, especially when you put yourself in their shoes. not to mention the little things you need like food, drinks, bathrooms, and over all wanting to spend time with the monsters I would believe it would take quite a long time to get through but that's just my opinion.

Haven't most of the characters survived from the human/monster war or is it just the turtle? It doesn't seem like monsters have that much desire to reproduce.

No just the boss monsters (Toriel and Asgore.) and Gerson are that old. The other monsters aren't old enough to remember the last human that fell.

Actually onion san is not the only one who mentions a city. In the mtt hotel one of the monsters say ‘’The elevator to the city is broken” and some guy in snows in says that again the city is getting crowded and they are planning to move to snowdintown so the areas we adventure seem to be mor like the outskirts of the underground

Concerning the point of the core- it should be noted while most geothermal power plants run off of steam, it seems to run straight off the magma, considering it’s like… right in it. Idk how much energy that would make tho, but we also don’t know how magic electricity translates to real electricity

There are at least two more royal guards that didn't get featured in the game. RG 3 and RG 4. They were removed because their fight felt too redundant from 1 and 2. The fight was fully programmed, if you look it up.

How snow gets underground aside, the indication of a bigger size is hot land is much closer to the earths molten center than the wetlands which lay in the crust. If Cara/Frisk fell thru the top if the mountain, then perhaps that Frisk is going downwards as he progresses.

I think that the places that we see in the background that are unexplored are real locations and the underground has the size of a country (a country in the size of the US, Brazil, Australia and India). Papyrus mentions a beach in the game and he mentions a location with "green grass" in the recent Deltarune newsletter (although people connect it with Hometown from Deltarune).

good point about the journey time, with a spherical barrier that based on those numbers, has a 40Km diameter the volume ~=~ 18000Km^3 though with the space bending shown by the houses being bigger on the inside and dimension boxes it would be more like having 25000Km^3 to work with and with overpopulation and cities in the ruins and in the distance as well as the ratings reaching 12000 I like the idea of a population above 20000.
@NetMoverSitan7 жыл бұрын
It would put the frame rate at single figures if it was hundreds of thousands. | The CORE might've been for experiments as well as the main power supply, finding other ways to free them. | 5:40 - Transvestite! | It appears that based on the true pacifist ending, they're not as threatening towards monsters as they once were.

There could be only 1 celebrity in the Underground, because do you see how they live? Being a celebrity is nothing close to what their life styles are. They all own small stores, not big ones. A lot of what they do isn't big in Undertale. If you also didn't notice, Mettaton's life style is a lot different, he lives in a big science lab. He lives big, not small.

I'm building a replica of the underground in Minecraft (I've spent about 7 months on it so far). I tried to scale it so that Frisk would be a little less than 2 blocks tall (the size of a minecraft avatar). The map is looking like it will be ~6000 blocks long. It's hard to say how tall Frisk (I've heard everything from 1 meter - 1.6 meters , I guess it depends on the player much like their gender). That would make their journey from where they fell to ASGORE'S throne room between 3 and 7 kms (as a yellow bird flies).

I know this video is old. But you'd be right, but the thing is... With the mention of the capitol and Toriel having gone literal grocery shopping, it'd mean the backdrop seen in the ruins is read and it is just a large city. With that we can infer the others are real too.
@real_nosferatu5 жыл бұрын
Approximating frisk's age as 10, their speed must be around 3 km/h(the avarage speed of a child that age). If the play time is 8 hours, and ~2 are spent battling, frisk must walk for 6 hours trough the underground. 3x6= 18 kilometers, witch would fit the avarage width of a mountain.

*sigh* Didn't exactly get a clear-cut answer. Good thing I'm running my own experiments, though I've only had the patience with doing the Ruins. Though my research is only done purely on Frisk's height. If Frisk is 5 ft in height (average height of 12 year old human male), then the Ruins (explorable area only) are ~1965 ft in length.

I consider it to be fairly small for all the reasons you described, but perhaps expands a bit further than we may think, since where do you think the Underground gets all of its resources from for its citizens' day-to-day life? Something tells me it can't all be only from the surface alone like with Anime. Sure, electricity and energy comes from the CORE, but what about food? Although Bratty and Catty collect stuff they found in the garbage and MTT-Burger Emporium's food seems very sketchy, surely there's something else that's keeping the monsters fed down there. Perhaps a few in the capital and some farming areas in a few places where we don't explore, but I don't think this makes the Underground a lot bigger. Only a bit, since you don't require too much land to keep a few hundred/thousand people fed.

Great video! I think it is fairly small, with a few hundred monsters, but I do think that both the city in the Ruins and the forest behind the bridge in Snowdin are real. We know that monsters used to live in the Ruins in a city (confusingly called Home) so it makes sense that that is it. Also, Papyrus says that he paints over a rock formation, not a rock face. This makes me think it's just a natural bridge made of stone. The Underground is probably a bit bigger than it looks, but still probably no more than 100 square km.

the capital city is one of the places you never explore in undertale, you just see ASGORE's castle, there are monsters in the distant buildings so there's definitely a populated city in New home.

Okay so under my theory - Actually sat down and did the maths just now. I come up with a known population of 186 Denizens SHOWN. Assuming these numbers represent between 5% and 10% of their given area: we get a Grand Population between 1800 monsters and 3600 monsters. Certainly not a country but at least a large town - all contained under a mountain. The Maths: Grinding 20 + 16 + 18 + 40 monsters ++ every minor NPC that's 12 (waterfall) 13 (Hotland) 11 (MTT) 22 (Snowdin), 4 doggy guards, 2 armor guards and 6 frogs ++ named; Torial, Papyrus, Undyne, Dummy, Muffet, Napster, Riverperson, Monster Kid, Mettaton, Sans, Flowey and King Asgore, the octapus, so sorry and Jerry + Temmies Minimum of 6. ===== 186 SEEN characters.

I think the underground is bigger than what we see. Snowin that whole forest below debately does hold other monsters. One screen you can see someone leaving their house that is below the mountains. And all those extra house to can not reach in snowin town.
@josephD324 жыл бұрын
Even if the forest below the bridge is real, if that area below is all there is, that's still not THAT big. It may seem like you're looking at a lot, but from that height above it, that's probably still only about five miles or so. Same for the room where you can see what is presumably Asgore's castle off in the distance. It's not that the castle is all that huge, it's that it's really not that far away, just practically inaccessible for a human on foot from that spot.
