Scratched my head after watching other videos on the subject. Your explanation cleared this up for me. Thanks!

So happy to hear that, Mark! Glad we could help!

I also like to employ the Barry Harris family of four dominants as a 'back door dominant'. B flat, D flat, and even E can also resolve to C when the Dominant Flat nine (diminished) voicing is used

Barry is great! Thanks for the comment, Dan!

I hear pianists like McCoy Tyner who use common lines from the altered dominant a tritone away over the backdoor dominant (e.g. G7 altered line over an Abm7 -> Db7#11). I know G7alt is just the same scale as Db Lydian dominant, but is this a common way to think when soloing over this progression?

Hi @Atomic: thanks for the comment, and you’re right! That is certainly an option, yes!

So, it’s basically a subtonic bVII7 (a borrowed minorish attribute..from mixolydian mode..kinda)?? Thnx bro ❤

Great lesson! So when improvising over the backdoor progression what scales are "correct"? In the key of C is it F melodic minor then Bb lydian dominant? or is Bb altered dominant better?
@jazzpianoschool4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Mats! As to your question, you can use F melodic minor over the whole backdoor F-7 and Bb7!
@matsbrun53204 жыл бұрын
@@jazzpianoschool i see, thanks. Considering that Fm and Bb7 are diatonic to C minor does it work also using C natural minor for the F and Bb then back to major on the C?

...or don't think in terms of scales

Great work ! Can you do something on Epistrophy by Monk?

Possibly! Thanks for the suggestion and for the comment!

you need to explain how we can go to Fm chord in the key of C
@jazzpianoschool4 жыл бұрын
Khasab: thanks for the question. We grab the Fm from modal mixture, then make the Fm a “2min” add the “5dom7” which is Bb7 and then you arrive at the backdoor 2-5. Hope this helpful!

YOu really need to something about the volume when to teach the lesson in the podcast. Your intro is loud and clear, as I your final goodbye. When you go to the keyboard and teach, I can barely hear you

Thanks for this , but whats very annoying is your explaining a fairly basic concept so aimed at intermediate, players ? , but your voicings, speed of demo and "fast , flash show off" licks are way over most peoples heads ,,, when teaching its important to keep a slow pace for the watchers , that way you will get way more audience ( clicks )
