It can be brushed off as reusing assets but it would also make sense if in this new timeline they want to incorporate the Ghosts and modern warfare story into one together, hell in future seasons we may even get a character from ghosts to help put it together. The only praises most people speak of when regarding ghosts is the campaign (and extinction to an extent) so it makes sense since Ghosts will never get a sequel because of how badly recieved the multiplayer was and the stigma around it. This way everyone wins - players that loved the modern warfare cast can be involved with the ghosts cast.

I've said this before, the Ghost Mask is used by a spec ops team called "Ghosts" with Simon Riley as the Commanding Officer. Mace was part of his team but didn't like it since Mace also wanted to be a Commanding Officer. As for Nikto, I don't know if he was in Simon's Team. Every Ghost Member should have a Mask and a skull tattoo on the underside of their arm just like Simon and Alex.

If you beat the campaign on Realism, you’ll get an achievement called “Out of the fire”, I don’t think that Alex died. Update: with Season 3 out now, we now know everyone’s favorite “Alex” is alive and well, unfortunately he lost a leg. But that doesn’t make him any less of a badass. If you login to modern warfare you’ll be greeted to a cinematic where Alex meets Simon “Ghost” Riley. From their brief interaction we can assume they have a history together. I have a theory that Alex was actually part of a group that held those three other characters we see with ghost masks. And we can guess that these are all similar because of the tattoos we see on ghost and Alex and the masks that those characters shared. And the niki guy had left the group for one reason or another with others following. This also makes a connection on the classified file on Simon Riley and the secretive past of Alex. So I think Ghost and Alex are two different characters at this point...(sadly) but I do believe they were both in one spec op group, linking the two characters.
