that's one version of the story, that Skeletor was once Keldor, half-brother of Randor who ended up betraying Eternia, because he wasn't chosen to be king, Keldor attacked the Hall of Wisdom to obtain "the power" from the Elders, but Randor stopped him, during the fight, Keldor tried to kill Randor with an acid tonic, but Randor deflected the substance with his shield, causing it to hit Keldor in the face and melt it off, Keldor survived and escaped, he had to turn to Hordak for help and Hordak's evil magic transformed him into Skeletor in another version, Skeletor was always a "living bone man" and hails from another dimension where every one is a "walking pile of bones", but his home world was taken over by Hordak, and in order to live, Skeletor surrendered himself to Hordak and started serving him, learning dark magic along the way, but the longer he served Hordak, the more he wanted to take control, he eventually betrayed Hordak and banished him to Despondos dimensional prison, he then arrived in Eternia, a world rich with magic and tried time and time again to obtain "the power"

These stories aren't a continuous arc. There are several different canons that are all retcons of each other. The comics have their own canon which is separate from the Filmation canon which is different from the 200x/MYP canon. Then there are other canons purely based on the toys. In the comic "Masters of Multiverse" the different canons are all acknowledged.

1980s minicomic Hordak is basically the ancient warlord that he was in 200X. Those are all online. Filmation Hordak is a subtly different character as the Horde is not Ancient in Filmation - they are a galactic empire like Star Wars has. That Hordak has the most screen time. This is what makes it difficult to do Ancient Hordak and She-ra at the same time. These videos are of course the background of the ironically recent "classic line" continuity.

Part 1 of Comment: What I most want to say is how much I love that Hordak is holding together the larger He-Man & She-Ra franchise as the greatest current unifying thread between various He-Man reboots & She-Ra reboots, and the magnificent dramatic irony of that. I'll get back to that shortly. It seems unfair, though, to say that the "girls'" division stole Hordak, since that branch of Mattel's toy production never took over production of any Horak toy: he only appeared in the minicomic that came with the original She-ra toys, & that was necessary to explaining her story ( & was also almost certainly done by the same team & artists who created the "boys'" minicomics for the other He-Man & Masters toys). It seems more that FILMATION decided Hordak would make a better villain for the larger story of She-ra than would catra alone, & wanted him and the Horde ( likely to help keep boys engaged in a way that just an ongoing cat-fight between She-ra & Catra wouldn't have, especially back then ) to make for a more complete cast of villains for the show, & that Mattel, the "boys'" line very much included, agreed, since the He-Man show was about to be cancelled anyway, & She-ra's movie & subsequent show were the only way Hordak & the Horde were going to get any on screen air time. And, I cannot emphasize this enough... Hordak being shifted to the role of She-ra's primary villain is one of the BEST things to happen in the ENTIRE MOTU(POP) history of creative decisions. It is SUCH a GOOD thing that Lou Schimer & all the folks under his leadership over at FILMATION decided to go that route ( or, at least, that they decided to double down on that path; Mattel had already set it up by having Hordak be the one to abduct Adora, & by having him banished in a horrible corner of Etheria, but FILMATION stayed the course, whereas the minicomics soon veered away to a Catra only focus [ I LOVE the way the minicomics made Catra more powerful & formidable, & hope that aspect of her will appear in future reboots BUT with her still in allegiance with Hordak ]), and that they held a larger vision of a unified He-Man & She-ra mythology & greater story arch; whereas the gender divided male & female teams at Mattel at the time were too busy being petty & punitive to manage the same feat. Now, I like She-ra, Catra & the ladies having realistic hair, so that much I wouldn't have changed from the "girls'" department. I always thought it made them prettier & more attractive ( i.e. more alluring & sexy to my little boy self, even though at the time I had no idea what either of those two words meant lol ) than the Teela & Evil-Lyn toys ( as I child, I wasn't even sure Evil-Lyn wasn't bald headed under that helmet!! lol ). Having said that, I have repeatedly stated that the "girls'" choice to ( at least in the USA, the European division seemed to go a more sensible & effective gender neutral route ) market She-ra in virtually the same way they did Barbie & my-little-pony was a poor choice, alienating the male market in a way that more gender neutral commercials ( like that epic one from the UK, which features a He-Man toy, and then has Catra & She-ra racing along on their mounts through storm clouds, Neverending Story style, with an epic "I need a Hero"-esque choir doing a background overture )would not have. Then, evidently still salty about the "girls'" division stealing She-ra, the "boys" division seemingly decided not to include She-ra in the He-man focused minicomics ( to Mattel's later detriment ), & the "girls" team re-revenged by not putting He-Man or any of the rest of the masters in any of later She-ra comics. And I think those choices, born out of a mix of petty competition between those two divisions at Mattel, and also of actual sexist gender segregating, did a lot of harm to the potential sales. I think if more of He-man's minicomics included She-ra and her friends in action roles against Hordak, the Snake men etc., boys would have been more interested in having her and the girls would have been more interested in getting whatever He-Man toys came with comics that feature She-ra adventures: the same is true on the other side; MORE He-Man & Skeletor in more She-ra toy minicomics would have moved more boys ( who were more into comic books anyway ) to buy toys of She-ra's friends, because they would want to get those comics, and it would have been the only way to do so ( and also a good cover for all of those boys who wanted the toy anyway but felt awkward asking for a "girls'" toy lol ). I very much think that the way your MOTU Classics team ( & you all deserve SOMUCH credit for properly reunifying Maters/POP in official Mattel toy-minicomics!!) BRILLIANTLY packaged & with the bios ( aside from that excessively barbaric ugliness y'all used Mermista to commit against poor Merman ), & the DC line that heavily involved He-man & She-ra did things, in terms of the full inclusion & unified He-Man&She-ra, Eternia&Etheria mythology storyline was the right & best way to do things, as of course FILMATION had essentially done all those years before. Back to what I was saying about how GOOD it is that FILMATION maintained Hordak as a She-ra villain , that choice, following up on the great story of the abduction, helped to solidify a real sense of unity & of a shared story and history between all things He-Man/Eternia & all things She-ra/Etheria ( the "boys'" line minicomics decision to continue using Hordak as a third faction villain against He-Man & Skeletor was actually ALSO essential, though they could easily have done this while still sometimes bringing She-ra into the fold ). The initial abduction story itself was definitely great, though I suspect it at least started at Mattel & was part of She-ra's backstory pretty much from the start, even before the first Filmation still was made for her: that story is so much better, and adds so much more epic drama & layering, than if Hordak just showed up the way King Hiss did, as some back in the day baddie who used to be Skeletor's boss. The abduction elevated Hordak from "season next boss baddie & threeway antagonist" to the archetypal realm of dark fairytale antagonist, an evi warlock showing up to menace a king & queen by snatching away one of their children like something straight out of ye olde Grimm Brothers adaptations of ancient fairy folktales. It gave him a personal history, and a deeply traumatic & ( once remembered by them ) feud creating ( or drastically & dramatically exacerbating ) one with Adam/He-Man's family & the entire monarchy of Eternia: it also adds a stunningly dynamic layer to his larger history with both Skeletor & the royals, if we ( as I do ) take the Keldor story as the most true Skeletor background: in kidnapping Adora & making her one of his highest captains in the Horde, Hordak established a pattern of corrupting the descendants of King Miro & of Grayskull ( though in my idealized timeline of events, instead of Hordak's spirit guiding Skeletor all the way the minicomics version of events where Hordak is released by Evil-Lyn, I would have synced things more with the FILMATION & old minicomics storylines, by having Keldor, under Hordak's instructions, have freed Hordak to re-enter Eternia BEFORE Evil-Lyn did... then Hordak makes Skeletor his chief lieutenant, & runs amok on Eternia for about a decade or two, culminating with he & Skeletor abducting baby Adora as in the movie, & with Skeletor THEN betraying Hordak & RESEALING him in Etheria, just as the original comics & cartoon assert. Evil-Lyn frees Hordak again 16 to 20 years later, because, as you say, that's what Evil-Lyn does lol. As I began stating at the start of this commentary, the decision by FILMATION to keep Hordak as She-ra's chief villain, alongside Mattel continuing to send him into He-Man stories in the minicomics, has resulted in this EPIC & excellent grand dramatic irony: that after all these years, in SPITE of the current studio reboots seeming insistence on themselves emulating original Hordak's old & most infamous crime of keeping twins Adam/He-Man & Adora/She-ra separated from one another, AND IN SPITE of the pettiness, infighting & gender biases of Mattel's "girls'" & "boys"' line in the 1980s ( &, indeed, of the gender bigotries of the whole culture at the time regarding things as trivial as toys with realistic hair versus toys without it [ ridiculous, really ] ) which evidently led them to go on keeping the twins apart ( again, Hordak-style ) in most of the minicomics, it is Hordak himself who has done the MOST & who gets the mvp award for continuing to provide the most evident & undeniable unifying thread between the two halves of the fractured He-Man&She-ra franchise, by continuing to show up as an unmistakable leading villain in television reboots of both He-Man & She-Ra alike.

Part 2 of cmment *whew!!* lol: A final related note ( I may say this elsewhere again later, so, ya know, forewarned lol ): I think the move to Dreamworks may end up being a good thing for He-Man, She-ra & all things MOTU(POP) for THIS one reason... while the need to sell toys gave us these epic characters & stories, I think, ever since the franchise fell into decline in the later 80s, the demand on the brand to have to keep selling toys that children will buy has been a constant Achilles' heel for the whole brand. The 2002 show appealed to adult nostalgia, and to the viewing patterns of teenagers/young-adults who were into anime action shows like Inuyasha & Cowboy Bebop. The problem for toy-makers and for the He-Man brand as dependent on toy sales is that teenagers/young adults, while they make for a great new fanbase for a franchise like He-Man&She-ra, don't buy a lot of action-figure/doll toys: they buy lots of video games, they go to movies, they start trying to drive, trying to have sex, getting part time jobs, getting ready for & going to college, but for the most part, by the mid-teens, they've stopped doing a lot of toy buying, & yet most of them have not yet gotten into collector focused buying. Basically, that demographic of new young viewers; basically, they're the demographic represented by movies like The Breakfast Club, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, A Different World, Euphoria, & Grownish: & most of them are too old to be comfortable buying a lot of action-figure/doll toys. The 2002 He-man definitely bought new young viewers into the franchise... but not one's young enough to be what they needed; action figure consumers. All that to say, I think Dreamworks, which is a studio & focused on things like subscriptions & viewers, is NOT dependent on toy sales & is not driven by them in the way that a toy company is. Dreamworks can prioritize JUST making a good He-Man&She-ra series that old school fans can overwhelmingly embrace & that will have the type animation & story quality to draw in new teenage & young adult viewers, without being beholden to whether or not the series is going to have enough little kid appeal to sell 20 million play toys. Thus, MOTU(POP), hopefully once again taken as a unified whole and singular entity, will finally be able to be looked at the way the DC, Marvel, Star Wars, Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, and now even old video game ip Castlevania are viewed: as an entertainment franchise FIRST, that subsequently can sell items like toys, games etc, RATHER than primarily as an engine for toysales that automatically gets cancelled if 6 year olds don't show up to Walmart ( mentally shedding a tear for ToysRUs, and trying to keep any real ones from forming now that I think about that place being as lost to me now as my childhood lol, ). P.S. Please forgive any typos, it was a lot of typing, and it's very late where I am. Also, forgive the commentary having turned into a novella.

@@spectorcreative1872 television shows and movies often leave us with the mysteries of certain characters. the life how they started out complete history of existence. a hint in the transformer movie series gave a little insight to this fact. Megatron and Prime were not always rivals in the beginning. that Heman and SheRa got separated at birth for safe reasons. Shadow Weaver gave up her beauty to become a powerful evil sorceress. but what did her face look like and what about Orco his face and origin was never revealed to anyone not even his closest friends knows of his origin. but some of us are curious we have a basic need to know these things. it took time before learning that Jedi and Sith in Star Wars are not always what they appear to be. Peter Pan and Captain Hook were not always the enemies we seen in the movies. Dungens and Dragons animated series also had mysteries within that show. I'm sure answers are coming perhaps a sequel to Masters Of The Universe will give insight to what happens next.

The He-Man series (among others) was a major childhood inspiration for my 'Power of Omegus!' sci-fi trilogy I came up (Omegus, 'Supreme Emperor of the Imperium Empire' being the most powerful villain in all existence, who battles against the heroic scientist/special agent Dr Todd Roone of the W.D.F.) I'd love to see a crossover with He-Man & She-Ra if I ever write my story and if it becomes popular, Omegus would be the greatest threat to Eternia if he discovered that world (as he would be to any world that has the power that he craves)

This was pretty interesting! I had no idea Hordak's OG design was inspired by a mask or that Bruce Timm drew the first comic about him. I'm a big fan of the latest iteration of Hordak and he has a completely different backstory. In this universe, Horde Prime is a cult leader as well as ruler of a massive empire and Hordak is a clone of his, who was thrown out of Prime's army for being disabled and therefore "worthless". Hordak wants to be accepted by Prime and tries to conquer Etheria by setting up a Horde army there, in the hope of impressing his "brother" and proving he isn't worthless. Scorpia, Catra and Octavia are amongst his army! Adora was raised in the Horde too, but defects after befriending Princess Glimmer of Brightmoon and her best friend Bow. Adora doesn't have a wicked cool battle suit/persona in the new one and certainly no buzzcut, though I can imagine some lesbians might wish she did. XD Adora forms the Princess Alliance with various royals in order to take down the Horde. An autistic princess named Entrapta gets accidentally left behind on a mission to the Fright Zone and Catra and Scorpia convince her to work for the Horde instead, as their technology expert. She starts working beside Hordak and finds out about his backstory and disability. She tells him not to be ashamed of his disability, having one herself, and that "imperfection is beautiful". Hordak falls in love with her and as a result, when Prime shows up again, he eventually kills his big brother to protect Entrapta, the woman who showed him he was worth something. It's such a beautiful love story! :) I'm currently reading a fanfiction in which Hordak is Prime's literal brother and it's super good, especially when they find Etheria and meet lots of other familiar characters from She Ra!

I always saw the original Horde members as Hordak "upgrading" his crew based of Skeletors base crew. Grizzlor- Even more Beast Man than Beast Man. Leech- Creepier sea creature than Mer Man. Mantenna- Tri Clops may have more eyes but both are spies and Mantenna was Lovecraftian horror. Modulok- Trap Jaw can change arms, Modulok can change his whole body. Even in the cartoon Hordak had Shadow Weaver to Skeletors Evil-Lynn. Granted with the added lore, maybe Skeletor had made his crew with "lesser" versions of the Horde members.

I always felt like Hordak was disrespected from the get go and was one of the biggest mismanaged characters of the whole line. I mean, they went to all this effort to create a guy who made a guy with a skull for a face seem tame by comparison. When the commercials introduced this new ultimate evil that even frightened Skeletor, I was totally on board. So, did they take this instantly iconic design and personality and portrayed it as the ultimate evil? The biggest bad guy of all, worthy of training Skeletor and challenging both he and He-Man? Nope, he was shuffled off to fight a bunch of rooted hair dolls and a guy with a heart on his chest. But the indignity didn't stop there! No, he was quickly demoted to second banana so he could cower to Horde Prime. His henchmen, who judging by the figures, were supposed to be bizarre and terrifying were quickly reduced to comic relief. Grizzlor wasn't a terrifying beast of legend, just another idiot. Same with Leech. And Mantenna, maybe one of the most f---ed up and scary figure designs in the line was reduced to nothing more than a clown. Modulok was like something out of John Carpenter's The Thing, but spent most of his time in front of a computer console. And the disrespect didn't stop there. The 200X series was cancelled before we got to see Hordak truly arrive in his full glory. The comics mentioned in the video have him defeated by Skeletor. I mean the whole point of Hordak was that He-man had been defeating Skeletor time and again for the past couple of years and needed an adversary who really tested him. Yet Hordak was continually bested by Skeletor in just about every iteration, which torpedoed his whole reason for being. Then even the toy line quickly forgot what he was supposed to be ... introducing King Hiss as the new ultimate bad guy. All of the sudden everything was Snakemen, and the Horde was kind of forgotten. Even guys like Blast Attack, who seemed like a hoard figure, were now Snakemen figures.

The funny part about all these He-Man videos explaining the origins and different characters and stuff is... if you watch the episode of "The Toys that made us" on Netflix that focused on He-Man... you'll see just how much they were just throwing shit at the wall to see what stuck as far as character design. All this explanation is post hoc now that geek culture is super mainstream & demands that everything have this in depth story behind it to justifyits existence. Everything has to be Tolkien or something... truth is... they were just selling plastic, it was never that deep. But I love hearing how they ended up having to piece all this stuff together into and make it into a universe. They're doing the same thing with Star Wars I feel like. What was supposed to be a fun little romp about Space Samurai and Space Cowboys/Outlaws 40 odd years ago now has to be Hamlet or something... it ain't that deep.
