Back when soaps were 15 minutes a holdover from radio. The first half hour show was a year later with as the world turns.

I'm watching for the ads. With the announcer talking into the camera, they seem much classier and more personal than the ads you see now. The show itself is even intro-ed by the pitch man. I wonder why they got away from that style of commercial. The style seems to have been simply carried over from radio practice; maybe they eventually decided such ads weren't cinematic enough. The forthrightness of it -- "I'm here to sell you something." -- is appealing to a degree today's commercials can match only if they're entertaining, which takes some doing. Even the intro -- "You're watching a TV show, the sponsors and rest of us are proud of this production." -- makes me smile a little, even if I've no interest in the content. Without the intro, opening a TV show has an effect like you just walked into the theater, maybe in the middle of the action, brushing rudely past others to find your seat; with the intro, it's like, glad you could join us, hope you enjoy the show, is there anything we could do to make you more comfortable?

The Secret Storm did not rapidly age children. Roy Winsor did not rapidly age children on his other two soaps either - Search for Tomorrow and Love of Life. Rapidly aging children did not start until Irna Phillips and As the world Turns. After that all soaps started doing this.
