Nigel, Snake…wow, what a beautiful insight into the mindset of a pro saxophonist who lives to play and plays to live. This comes from a late starter sax player who just wants to play well enough to make them feel that they sound a little like the hero’s of the music they loved in their youth. There is a terrible conflict I feel, which is that of a sax player (or any musician/artist etc) who’s soul is utterly given over to that what they feel they must do, but, to have to survive in this harsh world, love, raise a family, and still pursue the dream of unhindered creation. Few of us can have it all I think. Myself, I will be happy to be able to play for myself, maybe for a few friends, and to pretend that I can be a shadow of those who I have admired and who have given me such pleasure through my years, listening to Pop, Jazz, Blues… Thank you.

Oh Snake, what a man, what a personality. Met him very first time (some time a go) and he was like "know each other many years" . Not many people this kind and mentality this days! ❤

Saw Snake years ago on a small stage supporting Average White Band, with Hamish. Most electrifying performance I've ever seen.

Really interesting podcast, thank you Nigel and Snake. Great insights into the life of professional saxophonists and love Snake's Zen brush technique, I must try this for when I have to record a piece for Saxcschool.🙂

Excellent interview Nigel - I have followed Snake since he played in Leeds in the late 80's with Zoot & the Roots (great band, by the way)! Loves his Yanagisawa horns too!!!

I was an exchange student in Japan in 1980 and got to see E.Yazawa. He was pretty big then. I bought a double live lp of his I still have.

Cool! I’ll bet it was quite a show.

@@McGillMusicSaxSchool Japanese people are very well-behaved at concerts. At least at that time. They remained seated but yelled, screamed, and applauded at appropriate times.
