When I started dating my future husband, we didn't have a lot of interests in common, but whether it was by conscious effort or not, we have started sharing interests. I love trying the things that he's interested in, and sharing my interests with him. It sounds corny, but I feel like our relationship is stronger after we try new things together. We also talk pretty frankly about our feelings, how the relationship is going, what our goals are, etc. So, I hope this means we're going to have a strong and happy marriage :)

I'm not married but it seems like having someone you can talk with is really important. Not just the easy topics but also the uncomfortable ones like: how do you want to split the bills, your spending is out of control, I don't like your mom/dad/best friend, or even "I believe or don't believe in x religion" To go along with this, being able to laugh at yourselves in conversation is important too. I imagine a lot of people focus more on laughs and having fun, and then try to skirt the serious topics for "another day"

I'm surprised there is such a lack of critical thought on the subjects of marriage and conventional relationship models. People assume these norms should be what we pursue, and not even question them in the first place.

Every time i see a joint facebook account, i question who was caught messaging their ex lol. Me and my partner are both open and honest. We've always got each others backs and end small arguments before they erupt. Things like that can lead to a long wonderful relationship.. When my friends are fighting with their partner over the dumbest things, hearing about all the mistrust and paranoia that comes with a sketchy relationship.. I realize just how good i have it. If you're more willing to ignore and argue over your partners requests, than to fulfil them... Then you're priorities need a revision, or that relationship won't go far.

made me think much about my relationship. thanks. the thing for me is, that I cant not-argue about the little things. if I dont talk about them, they start occupying my mind more and more and eventually I get mad. but when I talk about them, then through out the conversation i get mad. i know that sometimes i am irrational in my arguments, but the thing is i am really nervous. i can hate the other person more than any one else during an argument and i know it sucks. its like when im a completely different person then. i dont know how to deal with it. any advice would be nice.

Ray Hoodoo I can relate... People always say to just talk to the other person when you have a problem, but half the time the other person will take offence that you're upset.. And then its all downhill from there. Negative emotion gain traction and a small fight turns into sometime more. I always try to keep things in perspective. If you have a hard time not arguing over problems, it could just be who you are. But you can always try to keep your perspective grounded. If you start getting angry while trying to express how you feel, tell yourself its not worth it. Step back and think before you speak. Instead of cursing or yelling, just remember you're only getting angry and upset because of chemical reactions in your brain. Dont surrender to the negativity, fight that instead of fighting your partner. Hell, sometimes people just need med's. Nothing wrong with it, but chemical imbalances are real and they can ruin relationships.

I might be a giant piece of shit for admitting this but as a person who has been happily single for years, seeing my friends argue with their girlfriends is soooooooo amusing. Especially when it's over something tiny that the guy won't just drop and then it becomes a whole thing, and sometimes there is crying involved which makes things rich. I've been in the position of my guy friends when I was in an on again off again relationship that lasted years and got pretty toxic, but since then I've learned not to sweat the little stuff, and ultimately when to let go.

To me the key to a successful relationship is much simpler - trust, compromise, and enjoyment. Trust accounts for things like honesty and loyalty. If you can't let your SO go out on his/her own without the need to check up, if you feel threatened or jealous of "potential replacements" easily, and/or if you feel the need to lie then you've got a problem. Compromise is your ability to look the other way when something doesn't go the way you want. It also accounts for accepting your losses. If you expect perfection, you'll never be happy. Enjoyment is pretty obvious - you can be the most cooperative couple ever but it won't last if you don't enjoy your time together. You don't have to share all interests, just as long as you like to be around each other. If you are missing any one of these 3 things, the relationship will at some point fail, its just a matter of when. Appearance is also important, but, you don't usually attempt to get into a relationship without some sort of physical attraction. Of course there are other things that can IMPROVE a relationship, but to me, there is nothing else needed to sustain one indefinitely.

Marriage as a contract use to have a function in society but it's lost its purpose to become a weapon wielded by (some) women with the help of anti-male courts. Doesn't mean you cannot have a relationship with a women - you just don't need a menage-a-trois with the state so much anymore.

This is a pretty narrow margin of factors on couple bonding, but that's obvious. There are so many other factors including mental illness, financial circumstances of both partners when entering into the marriage, and sexual habits. The majority of people are mentally ill in a way that they can't control without outside help and can't afford to have treated. Eventually, one of the partners identifies this and has to choose whether or not they can deal with this. You might think you can deal with something like OCD, but could you deal with borderline personality disorder and actual psychopathy? People tend to now, and really should be, waiting to get married until they are older and have not only a clearer view of their goals, but a clearer understanding of psychology and how it relates to adult bonding. It all goes back to your childhood, and YOU may not even know how deep YOUR rabbit hole goes until you've been in enough relationships. You also have to have a clear idea of what you'll put up with, that only comes from being in several relationships, fucking up, and watching them fuck up. "Yes, I can deal with the dish on the counter." "No, I can't deal with you molesting our son." That stuff.

ok where is the statistic 20-25% divorce rate coming from. The first thing that pops up on google search is "However, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce. The divorce rate for subsequent marriages is even higher." - (American psychology association, which is qouted from Encyclopedia of Psychology: 8 Volume Set Alan E. Kazdin, PhD, Editor-in-Chief ) And i cant find the other number anywhere. btw just because you stay married doesnt mean you are happily married or even together anymore. You can live away from your spouse and still be married.

I hit it off with a girl about a week ago, and she's got me all figured out by now, she told me today... "you're kind of cold, aren't you?" She's right, I am. I don't have a problem with the initial stages of getting a woman, but keeping this woman is a whole different thing, one I fail at. My need for emotional connection is low, therefore I tend to mind my own business. I honestly wish I didn't, would love to be more touchy feely and all that kinda stuff.

Anyways, yea I agree if someone is generally not supportive and uneasy being with that person in stressful situations, then it probably isn't a good idea to marry them. Also, the affectionate feelings despite those factors don't constitute as love in my opinion.

I found it interesting the examples that were given for what a "bid" is. Is someone really looking for "support" when they say something like "Hey look at that bird over there"? To me that seems like a random comment to which what ever response I give will be inconsequential. Am I looking at this wrong? When I think of looking for support I think of your S/O being stressed about something, or just wanting you to really listen to their rant about their bad day.

I once heard, think it was Charlie Sheen who said in Two and a half men, when his girlfriend at the time naggd' on him to go out running all the time and eat certain foods, to which he said (in the restaurant) : 'Why can't women be with someone for who they are, instead of who they can turn them into.' I think it's the same here. The 'get to know'-progress should be pretty much done before you get married. And for all those thinking-- Then what is left of the relationship if they know everything? To that I say-- The real adventure is experiencing things together, following eachothers passion (if you have it in common) setting up your life, family etc.etc Don't get married to someone you don't fully know and can accept, or better yet, Enjoy.

DaJMaster289 if people get married or not, or divorced or not, how does that affect you as a person? it's a way to take the relationship to the next level, promising to always be there for each other, even though it doesn't always work out, but that's okay. you should never stay in a relationship where you aren't happy. if you only want to have a "girl"friend for the rest of your life that is your choice and that is okay. But you shouldn't tell people to not get married if they actually want to. heh

cruuushhh It's gonna take a long time to finding the right partner sorting them out by flaws. By the time it's done he/she is already married with a nice family.

Why don't you do a video explaining how the expression "begs the question" has changed completely its meaning based on a misconception about its (rather complex) original meaning, partly because the verb "beg" has an extra meaning few people know. The original meaning of the expression is a nearly extinct dinosaur, but it still sounds a bit odd if you are one of those few old-fashion freaks who happen to know how it all started.

greenlemon4766 Other channels have done a lot of things that DNews has done. Redundancy is actually more useful than you may think. One channel might explain just one detail a little differently, and you may find yourself understanding it better simply because they made a slight alteration to the wording of a sentence. On top of that, you may not enjoy watching other channels, but might enjoy watching this one. The list goes on.

I'm glad you went to all the trouble of bringing up this random topic about "begs the question" and changes to it's meaning. Yet you explained nothing about the subject and raised even more questions in my mind before giving any insight on what your talking about. I'm unhappy with this... There you go, that's all I have.

Married twice. They did not FAIL. The relationship went to its end. Married for life is a result of traditional values. These values have evolved and changed over the century. I don' rule out a third marriage, but I wouldn't worry whether it lasted forever. I know many long term married couples but I don't envy them. What you wanted 25 years ago may not be what you need today. That is the point. Time to move on and find something new.

I don't agree entirely with the "talking about your partner with them in the room" thing.. sure sometimes it will be because they are somewhat lying.. but I think more often it would be because they don't like the situation.. they could completely love their partner, but the situation could still be awkward and weird and not feel right.. and even though you love them completely.. you could still be worried about saying something they wouldn't like.. doesn't mean at all that you don't love them or whatever. If I was in that situation I would be awkward since I'm not a social talkative outward person.. but I do love my partner and we have stayed together. So the results there seem to be fucked up for a number of reasons.
