Over the last 18 years I have changed jobs a lot; usually every 2 years. I would get sick of the job, the people, and being dumped on. If you’re a good worker you tend to get punished for performing (performance punishment) while others play games and pretend they can’t get their work done. As a result of doing that, I’ve been fortunate enough to earn significantly more at each position. I wasn’t doing it intentionally to increase my salary but because of changing jobs so frequently, I was able to pay off 6 figures in student loan debt and save a lot of money. There’s no way that I could have gotten to the salary that I achieved by staying at one job for those 18 years.

I'm not sure where I heard it before (I'm sure it was in a book I read) but I remember someone saying she gained her $100k income by job hopping, and that's all it took for me to hear, because it got me searching for another job. I was working for my last employer for 6 years and the last 2 years I didn't get a raise with an exemplary evaluation because of their cap. So, I searched and got another job paying $12 more an hour. Mind you, I'm in another state but I didn't have ties there so it was easy for me to pick up and go. Also, I got a smaller place in this state paying $300 less in rent. Come on now!

VP’s and CEOs change jobs like underwear!! I’ve seen it! They change almost every 3-5 years. Moving up the ladder to bigger and better each time. Another 👍🏽

I just got "laid off" sort of. My job will Essentially be non existent after a certain day next year and I'm so relieved. These jobs are absolutely not loyal. Don't care one bit about the employees whatsoever. And I just started at this position 😒 I look forward to starting my digital nomad journey in the new year! Some way, some how.

I've been slow quitting my job for a few years now after watching people doing less benefit more. Finally eligible to retire this summer. I'm taking my pension and running. I'm a state worker. If you been in the system for a good amount of time, you actually earn less changing jobs. A new position you have to start at the bottom of the pay scale. The longer you stay in your current job position, the more you make. Tech workers have always change jobs to get there skills up and up your pay.. I think the rest of the job market is catching up on this idea.

Thank you Ladies! Gail, you are an inspiration:) Malika - can you talk about retirement accounts available to self-employed people?? Is there an equivalent to a 401K/403B?

In the chat, I see a few people saying temp agencies. I wish the agencies were concurrent in placing you in another job immediately after the assignment ends. Has anyone gone to different agencies to pick up some work? Nowadays some of them seem to ghost you or just want you to send them your resume. I cannot stand some of the recruiters that our aggressive so that they can make their commission esp if its a job I'm not interested in taking. I wish I had known in my younger years of working that companies were not loyal. I need an income to pay monthly rent/bills going into my semi retirement years. I'm going to read up on how to do Cambly.
