This video is incredibly true. I didn't know any freemasons when I joined my lodge. I emailed the Secretary of the Lodge and said that I am a good man that wants to be better. I was called within a short time. The Junior Warden called me and invited me to a dinner at the lodge. In my Lodge you are required to go to at least 6 social events. This is so the brothers can get to know you and you get to know them (and also figure out if this is what you want to do). After getting to know the brothers in the lodge I asked for an application, filled it out, turned it in, and was voted into the lodge. This is when I found out that this is the brotherhood I missed after the military. It's about Esprit De Corps (a feeling of pride, belonging and loyalty). When I left the military I had lost a large amount of that feeling. Freemasonry has brought it back. If you are a good man and seeking brothers who will walk with you during good and bad times then Freemasonry may be for you. If you seek government secrets and power you will probably be dissappointed.

If these things aren't attractive to a person (e.g., during their discretionary time, they'd rather sit alone in a dark room and play video games and/or develop their personal "community" via social media and internet groups), then they probably aren't going to feel there's any value in joining.

@Paul Weder Hi Paul. It's important to acknowledge, that Freemasonry can give a man so much, but also allow him to give to others. Yes, he can give his cash, but he can give his time, too. Sometimes, what we achieve in a group, can be so much more than the some of it's parts. Men join for various reasons. Some join for the social side, some for the esoteric side, some for the charitable side, and some for the cameraderie that Freemasonry provides. You get a lot of armed forces men join, because it is very much like a "band of brothers"....but most join for a mixture of those things, plus other things. No man is perfect and that includes Freemasonry. Immersing onesself in the ethos of Freemasonry, rubbing shoulders with like minded men, can keep you on the straight and narrow. It can support you in low times and allow you to help others in such times. It's not for everyone. Some men work much better alone and that's fine.. if that works for them, that's great. However, some prefer to do things in a group and that's us. I hope that helps.

The best thing in y life was when I became a Mason. I was 21 and went through the degrees in three months. I turned in all of my work, and four days after my third degree, went to and completed the Scottish Rite. My boss and I later went through the Shrine. It has been 58 years since. My life has been much better throughout the years because of becoming a Mason. The teachings make you a better man if you follow them.

@RealTexasPlaya Glad your interest has been piqued. And also good that you are discussing it with your family. Indeed, as part of the process of your application, you will be intereviewed and then a home visit will be arranged. This is where (usually) a couple of Masons will visit your home, so that you can ask questions on your home soil and that your relatives can do the same. Very often, at the end of any interview, the interviewer will say "do you have any questions"....and usually, the interviewee will say "no", only to think of some AFTER the interview is over! This will allow you to do that in your own home, where you will feel more comfortable. Good luck!

Hi! I've been watching your vids and appreciate the info you're providing. Thank you. I'm interested in joining a lodge. I've just begun looking into it. However, I feel hesitant to reach out because I'm a 48-year-old in the process of going to college, full-time, for a career change (happily, I was able to build up enough savings through my years of work up to this point to afford the opportunity). Here's the crux of my hesitancy. Due to my full-time student status, although I am still employed, I'm maintaining that employment at only a minimal level (far less than full-time). I have the impression that employment is an important factor when a lodge is considering a petitioner (and this makes sense; it's valid and reasonable that a man must be able to financially sustain himself). I also understand joining entails a certain commitment -- both financial (dues, etc.) and in time/study (the latter particularly in the early stages of the Masonic journey). I know you understand why I, as a mid-life college student, would have concerns regarding these aspects of joining. I would love to hear your *_personal opinion_* regarding whether you think I should wait to reach out until I am once again fully employed. My preference is to avoid delay but do you think that's the best course of action? I understand anything you might say is solely your personal thoughts on the matter and also generalized because no one person can speak for every lodge or jurisdiction. Thanks a lot for any insight you might be willing to provide.

Your job status doesn't matter. If you can pay your dues and are not a burden on the Craft that is all that matters. Dues are not pricey really. A few hundred to become a Mason and usually around 100 a year, give or take. The time commitment is a bigger factor. But manageable in my opinion. I would connect with a lodge in your area and ask about their particular time requirements, as it can vary from state to state. ~ME

As a young child I remember my Great Grandfather, Theodore "Guy' Overfelt, was a Mason here in Kansas City. He had rings and I believe one of them commemorated 50 years. I never knew him well, but my Great Grandmother, Lola Doris Willoughby Overfelt, spoke highly and frequently of his being a Mason. She gifted me his rings, which as an 8 year old wasn't the best idea as I haven't known what happened to them over the years. She always encouraged me to join the DeMolay's, and she would have been so proud. Her daughter Joyce Jean Overfelt Welch (my grandmother) had joined some group called "The Order of the Eastern Star" but I wasn't aware of it's connection to Freemasonry. I had very few friends, was an only child living with my divorced single mother and didn't want to do anything that risked those few friendships, or appeared to be "nerdy". So I passed it off then, and it remains a regret with hindsight. As a young man working in my family business, one of our employees whom I respected very highly from early on and to this day, had joined a local Masonic Lodge and it made sense to me that he would have as he was always becoming a better man. However I have lost touch with him through the years and although I may currently know someone in the fraternity, I am unaware of who that might be. I may not be the gem a local lodge would want to accept right away. No criminal record, but a divorce, and struggling to run a one man business while trying to care for my widowed crippled mother and keep up maintenance and child support payments keeps me burdened on many levels. However I would really like for my son's to at least take a good look into Freemasonry. My oldest just turned 21 and my youngest is 17. Both are such good young men and I was blessed beyond reason with both of them. Considerate, kind, responsible boys, but their future's are a mystery to them and guidance from more good men in their lives is something I would pray for them to acquire sooner than later. My oldest began attending a very orthodox Catholic church every Sunday, and it is in Latin so I think he is enamored by the ritual, but not really learning a lot about God. Still I admire and respect his choice, and make sure dinner on Friday is void of any meat. I dress in my Sunday best and attend with him when I can. Thank you for all of your videos, and for this one as well. I would like to find out how to put my boys in touch with members and I believe if they knew a member or two they would take an interest and have that avenue to join. Outside of knocking on the lodge door up the street, I don't know how to go about affecting that introduction to them. So any other avenues you may advise would be greatly appreciated.

Kansas City is the home of Demolay and has a very strong Masonic community. And contact a local lodge. Your divorce doesn’t matter to us- many of us are in the same boat. I think you’d find a community willing to support you.

I have read a lot about Freemansonry, and was intrigued by several aspects. I did read the information William Morgan leaked. Your history is amazing and your fruit is virtuous. I really admire Manly P. Hall, and believe he was a savant. The fact that your lodges will at times have the 3 major monotheistic religious books on display tells me much about what true Freemasonry is. With my past I'll never be among you, it's still good to know you guys exist. I like to think I can take all that dense past of mine through a spiritual process and transform my soul into something equally dense in light. It's tough alone tho.

I’m very interested in Freemasonry. I’m heavily invested in research of universal truth as well as esoteric spiritual scriptures from all ancient religions. I’ve listened to some masons online say they were greatly helped and guided in that area of study by their fellow Masons. I don’t think I know anyone at all that’s. Mason. I looked up all the lodges near me and wrote down their monthly meeting day and time. Can I show up even if I’m not a member to show my interest or is it considered disrespectful? I went a transformation about 10 years ago. I was very outgoing, reckless, and immature. Then THE EVENT happened. Something changed in me one day. Im not sure what exactly, but i haven't been the same since. Ive spent the past 10 years not seeking friendship from anyone. And im ok with that. But i miss the camaraderie of having friends. Most grand lodges will make accommodations so that active duty military can get their degrees with ease. And once you are a Mason, you can sit in any lodge in the world as long as you remain in good standing.

@greg samonte Although the answer from SR Masonry is correct, I'd recommend that you wait until you are a little more settled, say when you are shore-based rather than seagoing. I was in the Royal Navy when I first joined and waited until I was going to be at a base for a couple of years before I took my First Degree. That granted a little stability so that I could work through my three Degree and to get to know the Brethren in my Lodge. There are lots of seafarers in Freemasonry and at 9pm when we meet, we toast them wherever they may be and hope that wherever they may be, they are doing the same.

Depends on the lodge and the time lapsed and the issues at hand. If it was a dui 20 years ago? Prolly fine. But it really is up to the individual lodge and what your personal explanation is for it if you were 17 when some things went sideways and now you’re 50? Chances are most people would be OK. But again your mileage may vary. Sorry that’s not a terribly helpful answer.

Wish I had seen this video before sending in my application yesterday, guess I'll see what happens and hope for the best. I do have one question though, does believe that we are all perceiving the same thing from different perspectives count? I believe in a supreme being but don't have a name for it. Had a dream about this when I was 16, essentially coming to believe we all hold a different piece to the perverbial puzzle and instead of fighting over whose right or wrong we should be putting our pieces together. Clearly the fact that as a continental European belonging to a 'irregular' lodge ; i.e. not recognized by The GL of Londen, is probably the issue. Could you recommend an open minded lodge in LA or/ and Santa Monica?

Many brothers aren’t sure how to interact with irregular masons. So they avoid the issue. My suggestion is to contact the grand lodge in your area and confirm that your lodge is not in amity. Then ask what they would suggest. The will be the Authority in your areas.

Although I am a lecturer(confer degrees) in 3 Protestant Fraternal Orders, Freemasonry is not for me. I don't think that it is right that a potential Masonic candidate can be blocked of membership by a secret"blackball" vote. My thinking is that a Freemason could even say to a man that he's sorry that he was blocked from entry when in fact it was HIM that blackballed him. In the fraternal orders that I'm in anybody who wants to block a potential candidate's application HAS to stand and voice his objection. In my opinion this prevents members being "two faced"when a potential candidate's application is rejected. A potential candidate stole a Freemason's girlfriend years ago? TALK about a petty reason for refusing membership to any fraternal order. It's not exactly a crime. Freemasonry makes good men better? I don't think that a Freemason,who blocks a man from joining a lodge over a petty thing like stealing someone's girlfriend YEARS ago has been made better. I also think that a Masonic business man could object to a man joining JUST because he is a business competitor. Also as I am a working class man I don't think I would fit in in Freemasonry.

Plenty of working class men in masonry. In fact mostly working class. As far as the “girlfriend” example, I was being glib. These videos are meant to be entertaining as well as informative. And if it’s not for you, that’s fine. As far as the balloting goes, lodges are built on harmony. So, each member gets a vote and by virtue of the fact that we are all equals, we each have the same power. Every mason I know takes it seriously and wouldn’t black ball anyone for a petty reason.

i used that website like 2 months ago, and it finally trickled down to the lodge i wanted to join, 3 weeks ago..sad they only got it the day after an open house lol i met with a member, outside the lodge building, got my application, told the fee 180$, it includes 3 degrees, plus background check.. and he invited me to eat, at the next meeting, and said i could turn in the petition .. which is this week that idea of turning in the petition, while eating with them, was a great idea, since they can all meet me, and i can make a good impression

From we’re I live C.D.Ward lodge 961 is the closest. I’ve always wanted to inquire about freemasonry but didn’t know how to approach. These men have day to day jobs and things to do, I don’t want to feel like a bother. But I may just goto the lodge itself to see if anyone is available to speak with. Thank you for the video. @sky art 32 the process to join engliah Masonry (and I suspect it is the same the world over) is to fill out a form. That form is used to start the process of joining the Lodge. The man himself then attends an interview with the lodge committee. If that goes ok, a convenient date is set for a couple of Past Masters to visit him at home, so that the man can ask anything he wants on his "home turf" and also to give his family the chance to ask anything that they wish, too. It is ESSENTIAL that a man has the backing of his family before joining. If that goes ok (and assuming his family is fine with it) his details are read out in open Lodge. A ballot takes place (and yes, we really do use black and white ballot balls) and if that goes ok, we contact him and arrange a convenient date for his Initiation. On the night he turns up for that, we take payment from him and he is Initiated. If, for any reason, and at any point, he is rejected, the paperwork he has filled in, is shredded. I hope that helps.
