Not all insults make me angry because they are true. They make me angry because they are a million miles from the truth and they are repeated until someone tries to make it stick or ruin my reputation. It's oversimplified to say you get angry when it's true. No, not always. Truth I can let go pretty easily. It's the stuff that's so wrong and furthest from the truth about me, that riles me.
@waldemarklazar1702 Жыл бұрын
I fully agree with you. There are so many ways to insult someone by flat out lying about them, someone they care about or something they care about. Anger doesn't only come from realizing there might be a grain of truth but also from the perspective that you might simple not be willing to swallow the bullshit someone is shoveling your way. I wish we were all enlightened human beings who could let every insult go, but sometimes you need to get angry and check the person who's talking bull.
@gurtana Жыл бұрын
@@waldemarklazar1702 absolutely. 100% agree. Wish I could let stuff go and not care. But in the work place, at home, or out in the world - if someone is talking trash and trying to ruin you or embarrass you in front of others, I call it out and confront it as best I can. I’ve let too much stuff go in the past and that’s not really a solution either. Maybe this all changes when you reach the top level and you’re the boss, but when you’re on the daily grind and you get people trying to throw you under the bus so they can get ahead, you can’t just let that stuff go unchecked. Reputation is key. Or maybe you can and should let it go, but I need to work on that. Jocko, tell me how.

Yes, I agree. I don't think insults always carry a degree of truth to them. Insults can and are often used to outright bully and disrespect people. When I was in high school at age 15 (this is going back... 20 years ago, wow), I remember a time when I got surrounded by a bunch of bullies, where they had me in a corner, preventing me from moving and leaving. With me sitting on the floor in said corner, they all proceeded to repetitively shout and chant homophobic slurs at me, and then they would shout "SHUT UP!" if I tried to respond, to which they would simply re-engage their chants. Am I a homosexual? No (I also want to disclaim, regardless of what some people in the world may believe, there is nothing wrong with homosexuality). There was absolutely no truth in what they said (in absolute fairness, there could have been some projecting of denied "truth" from the ringleader of this group, but who knows). What they were doing was a combination of many things, trying to make me feel weak, small, to emasculate me, to embarrass and humiliate me, and unfortunately for me, it certainly worked. It's good that you can let stuff go fairly easily gurtana, a good quality to have, I think. I agree, when people try to spread outright lies about you in an effort to disrespect you, to damage your image and reputation, that is incredibly frustrating and makes me angry, too.

A valid insight. Anger has an evolutionary purpose in life. It is an adrenaline stimulation, but if it's fueled by petty and egotistical provocations it becomes toxic and self destructive. Easy to anger. Easy to insult. Easy to destabilize.... Easy to manipulate into bad decisions. Anger is useful and appropriate when necessary, but it should be a rare emotion as opposed to a routine response. 👏
@S0ulinth3machin3 Жыл бұрын
anger is mostly unnecessary in the modern world. I completely agree with you. A long time ago when violence was often necessary for survival (when humans were part of the food chain or needed to fight for territory), then anger had much more of a place.
@Sam-rb1id Жыл бұрын
Anger is a pretty inconsistent response. You never know when you'll be angry and to what extent. Its better to do what you need to do because you have the courage and conviction to follow through on what you believe is right. You can learn that courage through practice. Re-acting purely based on emotion is not usually optimal and just not a very reliable source of strength.

I must say, your discussion on handling insults and delving into the psychology behind them was truly enlightening. It's remarkable how you emphasized the importance of not allowing insults to make us angry, but rather using them as an opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth. Jacob's point about separating the insult itself from the fact that someone chose to insult you offers a perspective I hadn't considered before. It's intriguing how our ego can be triggered, not only by the content of the insult but also by the audacity of someone thinking they have the right to insult us. It's truly eye-opening!

Indeed, managing insults and negative feedback can be challenging, but reframing them as opportunities for personal growth and self-reflection can be a powerful way to navigate such situations. Ultimately, it's a reminder that our own self-worth should not be defined by the opinions or actions of others.

I was bullied and beaten growing up. Nearly every day someone was hitting me, been knocked out so many times I can't remember them all, lots of TBIs. It ended when I was 16, because that that point I could defend myself. I turned 16 in 1985. Since then I have gotten far more muscular, and its very rare that anyone insults me in person. If they do so online, they change their tune completely when they meet me face to face. I do not bully others, ever. The best way to make people stop mistreating you, is to get training, muscle, and discipline. Mine came from wrestling in high school and the US military. I am only 5'8" but only drunk college kids try anything like that now. Physically I'm like a short pudgy version of Jocko with gray hair still on my head, and a beard. He was not the bitch, the person who so named him in the past was the bitch. He seemed to accept that and the team was stronger. No one ever called him a bitch again either. Yep! I tell people something similar, said less elegantly but basically the same message. I'll explain how their reaction, specifically an emotional reaction to insults, no matter what the intention or context behind the insult was - if you allow your emotions to be noticeable in your response, the more susceptible to manipulation you are. And repeated patterns which follow a noticeable linear and/or exponential rises of emotions evoking similar behaviours are easy to spot, easy to exploit and easy to then control. If you do not want to be manipulated psychologically don't let others have any psychological control over what is 100% under your own

Start with a fantastic skill of 'giving them enough rope to hang themselves with'. Then move on to the ultimate skill .... 'never react to anything.' After 2 years of practice and mind control, I'm now good at not reacting to anything. I want to be very good at it, then I want to be excellent at it. Its the greatest gift a person can give themselves. Example.... did you ever insult a person and there was no reaction from them whatsoever? How did that make you feel?....somewhere between powerless and silly, right?. You can annihilate people by saying and doing absolutely nothing.

Saying that insults hurt because their is a grain of truth to it is a way way oversimplification and not even true at times. Years ago when I was working retail I had to push a huge rack down an aisle and I said very politely "excuse me" to a customer. 99% of people are normal and be like "sure." But this one lady was just a nasty person and said "stupid b1tch." That hurt me so bad because I am a Christian and very obedient about not only not using profanity, but not even listening to it on TV, reading it in books, or being around environments where profanity is used (i.e. like not going to a bar for example). I had to struggle to hold back tears as that was the first time someone ever used such a nasty term against me. But, according to Jocko, the reason why that hurt was because there was an element of truth to it??? And people can be hurt by insults all the time and there not be an element of truth to it. Someone could be going through a rocky marriage and maybe during a fight their spouse yells at them "you're a stupid whore." The person who received that insult could be 100% faithful. And what, that's not suppose to hurt at all??? The more you love someone the easier it is for them to hurt you. Usually I think Jocko is spot on with his advice but I think he missed the mark with this one.

Thanks Jocko and Echo....I think people who are in positions of authority will be judged harshly for their abuses...they are to set a standard and when they abuse it then they need to step down...and eat humble pie and be held accountable. Sadly it seems they are applauded for abuses

Jocko wears a Superman costume for the same reason that Superman wears a suit as Clark Kent...he's trying to wear something that makes him seem weaker and more relatable.

Jocko talks about having humility as a leader, but then constantly undermines Echo Charles when he’s actually making a good point… constantly dismisses his input, which is usually more thoughtful and nuanced than what Jocko is even saying.

How does one have an opinion if we are supposed to agree with everything that upset us? Sounds passive to me.

Bro, Origin boots are ridiculously overpriced. Don't take it as an insult, I'm just being honest.
