The vast majority of Joe's answer was centered around equipment: 'boots, socks, cameras, treestands', etc. This makes me think that the hunting aspect is largely considered a given.

This is great info, and it hits the nail on the head. I feel like I am climbing the ladder. Every year getting better than last year, learning from mistakes and increasing opportunities.

Figuring out the why’s is extremely important. Especially the why the buck did that during this time and condition. 🌳🏹🦌

I like the last few comments about “progression” of a hunter and not falling into the monster bucks only trap. But it has nothing to do with shooting Mature deer. Basically learn from your mistakes and don’t be lazy and do everything you can to control what you can.

The secret to consistently killing mature bucks is no secret at all. Have the ability (money) to hunt where mature bucks are.
@bradcrook7122 Жыл бұрын
I don’t feel like it comes down to money at all. I think money is our mind making excuses for work we do not want to do. If you are willing to do the work, you will put yourself in position to shoot the type of deer you are after. I put a bunch of time and money into a couple private pieces I hunt, and those properties never produce the quality of bucks I find on public. Hunting mature deer will cost you a bunch of boot leather and some sweat. You are already burning gas money, so that’s pretty much irrelevant. I’m not trying to throw shade, but they are out there for everyone. Stay strong…go find those bucks you really wanna chase. Best of luck to you. 👊🏼

@@bradcrook7122 What state are you hunting?
@bradcrook7122 Жыл бұрын
@@russelllangworthy8855 I hunt Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa, but I live in Wisconsin. I hunt public in all three states and will probably add Illinois to the list soon. I do hunt a little “permission private” in Wisconsin, but less then 400 acres with all properties combined. Again, didn’t cost me a dime, just had to ask. I do bring value to those relationships, by doing favors for the landowners when they need me. I’m a carpenter by trade, so I do have a few handy skills, even plowing some snow in the winter for them, while they are at their winter homes.

@@bradcrook7122 Well there ya go. Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. I’m in Michigan where it’s rare to find a buck older than 2 1/2, and just knocking on doors to gain permission is a thing of the past. I, myself, haven’t hunted in Michigan in years. I’ve been hunting in Iowa since 1997. I still do a lot of legwork here for my daughter and grandson because they’re not at a point where big bucks are a priority, but coincidentally, my daughter has 5 Iowa preference points and will be hunting there this Fall. Which, of course costs money. A pretty substantial amount of money.
@bradcrook7122 Жыл бұрын
@@russelllangworthy8855 yes, out of state tags are a substantial amount of money, totally agree. I do know a few guys that hunt Michigan and are consistently in mature deer every year (150ish), but I understand Michigan is very big. There are a lot of areas in WI where deer don’t live past two years old also, three at best, so I wind up covering a lot of ground to find some good ones. I agree it’s discouraging to knock on doors these days, but every now and then I get a yes…makes it all worth it. Keep grinding brother, we just gotta keep fighting the good fight!! 👍🏼😊💪🏼

I like this clip. For myself, through many mistakes and reflection, lessons have been learned and improvements have been made. Continually making tweaks and improving habits leads to increased success. Also, you can't allow the occasional lucky situation to skew your overall prep and planning strategy either. One lazy hunt can shift your whole season (i.e. - telling yourself "4 years ago I got out late, neglected the wind, crossed main game trails to take a shortcut to a stand, and shot a mature buck that strolled by 10 min before dark...so maybe I don't need to over-analyze my every move?". Wrong). You might ruin an area that would otherwise produce your opportunity. Consistency is key, but you need to put the time in and make mistakes before you know what consistency/discipline really means and how to pivot game plans on the fly accordingly.
