I typically just shoot what gets me excited. Might be a 2.5 year old 115 incher on a long weekend hunt out of state or a 5 year old monster. I try not to let others opinions on what I should shoot affect my happiness.

@@beforetheecho That is a good policy. I was only wondering what Dan considered mature as he used the term to describe some of the buck he had killed and was after. Additionally, I was taking notes on the tips - stay mobile, hunt remote or overlooked property, and look for bedding areas in wet locations. Thanks for the great tips and the insight on mature bucks

Did you guys both kill a good buck this year? Is it normal to have years where it just doesn’t come together? This is only my second season of hunting beast style, and maybe I’m looking for some words of encouragement as it’s been a grind lol. Seen some good bucks this year, but it just hasn’t come together yet.

YES! You will have years, especially early on, you may have a year or 2 where you come up dry. I'm a. Public land only hunter. What I have found personally and through some KZbin watching is it is all about Time. Time in the woods. Learning! Watching. Etc. Those first 3 or 4 years were Frustrating. But also where I learned SO much. Build your foundation on time in the woods. Spring summer winter fall. Be in the woods. Every great hunter I have been around was a phenomenal woodsman. Learn your woods. Draws saddles SMZ,s etc. It all comes with time. Don't give up. IT IS WORTH THE GRIND!!!

Josh has been on fire this year, shot several nice ones, but yes, some years are better than others. I shot pretty good bucks in '19, '20, and '21, but nothing this year, and nothing in '17 or '18. The tough years might actually be the best for learning though, because you end up spending a lot of time in the woods. Keep grinding, keep learning, it will pay off. And keep watching this channel.

For sure man some years are a struggle for one reason or the next. Keep your head up and it just takes a minute for your season to turn around

I’d say number 1 is you can’t shoot small bucks. At least not at first until you get it figured out. You’ve gotta feel you had an unsuccessful season unless you’ve killed a big mature buck. This forces you to scout, possibly pick up sheds and get better or you are empty handed. I know this sounds harsh and it did to me also when I first read these words in Rothaar and Wensel’s books in the early 80’s. But it eventually made sense to me.

After falling outta tree stand I still occasionally will get in a ladder. But I swear if you scout good build good ambush spots hunting from the ground is leathal and very intense. Especially when big bucks are 5 yards in front of ya, three outta last 4 years I've harvest good buck from the ground with crossbow.

So then trimming trees for a stand setup in the summer would be the best, then put it up and take it down after each hunt?

3 friends and I booked a hunt in Illinois a few years back. There was a small shed building with a grain silo on the back edge of a corn field where both groups that hunted parked their vehicles. 8 guys total. My one friend and I got laughed at when we set up in a tree 10 ft from the shed and 20 yards from the trucks. My friend missed a 160 class 10 point out of that spot the first evening we hunted.

You know this guy actually has a wealth of knowledge about hunting because he doesn’t state things matter of fact. I have found if you as someone who is a expert on a topic a question it is never a clean cut answer they always end up discussing the factors that effect the situation rather than the conclusion of the question

Dan, great information. I have a question. How do you do a hang and hunt set up in the dark of morning? Are these prescouted trees where you set? Or do you just not set up until after daylight ? I have hunted out of state in unfamiliar areas and find it more practical to set up the night before. What are your thoughts? Thanks
@jax92242 жыл бұрын
From what I have heard listening to Dan over the years is he don’t hunt mornings that much at all because it does more harm than good most of the year but when he does hunt mornings he goes in at gray light so he isn’t making the loud mistakes.
@jsnb64892 жыл бұрын
@@jax9224 It would be hard for me to go on a 7 day hunt and not hunt for 50% of the time. I know from my personal experience I have shot my best bucks in the morning. I do however understand that he is all about the hang and hunt style. I think that's more practical on land that you are quite familiar with from previous years of scouting. I have just never watched a video where he indicated that he doesn't hunt the morning's.

my biggest archery buck was killed sitting on the ground in the crotch of a split tree at base. with huckleberry swamp to my back. 10 yard shot. sometimes taking a step back and assessing what's going on with human pressure around you pays dividends.
