My iron play is very inconsistent. This may sound strange but I have recently tried not looking at the ball when using an iron. I focus on the ground about an inch and a half in front of the ball. This has helped my ball striking considerably.

Been trying to avoid the 3 pitfalls with irons (short and mid), and fwy woods. I'm now totally confused after watching this video with a 7 iron and 3 fwy wood. I had a lesson from a teaching professional just recently to hopefully fix these 3 issues I was having (that are somewhat still occuring). Anyway, his fix for them was 3 individual steps and I list them here. 1. Ball position for almost every club in the bag (driver being the obvious exception) is the center of your stance. 2. Stand far enough away from the ball placement, so most, if not all the weight is on the balls of your feet, not the heels. 3. Swing ONLY with your arms, not the body. He stated the body will automatically follow the arm swing all by itself. So, unless I'm seeing something that your really NOT doing, it looked as if you are emphasizing fwd body movement to make solid contact with the ball first, then turf. Comment ?

You can’t start your downswing with your arms and get the correct sequence for power and accuracy.

If you'd watch a Ben Hogan video.. He always said that you started your downswing with the BODY...the arms follow the body rotation...swinging with your arms first...creates LOTS of problems

In a similar vein, a drill I use for around ten or so shots is to address the ball but instead of the club head being behind the ball as normal, take your normal address position but with the ball behind the club head instead. Then move the club back behind the ball, glance at the target, and swing easy. Initially it appears daft, but actually guarantees a low point 5-6 inches in front of the BACK of the ball. Don’t worry where the ball goes, just the feeling of hitting the wee ball first prior to the bottom of the swing.

Hi Ali, great video, the part I find difficult when doing this is to make myself stop looking at the ball but look at the point just ahead. So I'm guessing that I should still look at the ball (stops me lifting my head) but also do the left leg movement bit into the ball?
@richardc69323 жыл бұрын
Keeping your head down is one of the worst things anyone can tell you. Keeping your head down results in hitting behind the ball. If you rotate your hips forward to initiate the swing and weight transfer, your shoulders will follow and so will your arms and head. Ignore the ball and execute the proper swing without tension in the arms and hands. Tension is a swing killer.

While the low point after the ball may vary from player to player and you said there is no magic number, would you say that there must be an 'ideal window' for players to be trying to achieve, as if they get to 9-10 inches ahead of the ball for their swing low point would this not be encouraging a thinned shot?

As the clubs get longer you say the ball gets closer to the front foot. I thought the only thing that changes is how far back the trail leg is. Closer to your front foot with short irons, further from your front foot with long irons and woods but the ball stays about 4-5 inches from the front foot always.

so why can't you just move the ball back in your stance?
@kirkcalhoun48413 жыл бұрын
I thought this once also. However, what happens is you then are actually changing clubs. if you would hit a 7 iron for a 150 yd avg shot, moving the ball back in your stance now changes that to a 6 or even 5 iron due to the angle of the club at ball impact. This also changes the loft at apex and travel when the ball lands. Another detractor is that because of where optimum power is in the swing you lose power and consequent distance because power is in the hip rotation so optimum power is just slightly ahead of straight in front of you and by moving the ball back you're striking the ball way before the optimum power spot. Think of where a batter makes optimum contact with a baseball. I didn't figure this out on my own. I played with a buddy one time who is an 8 handicap, he's spent a fortune on lessons so I ran this by him while we played because my irons were so inconsistent. As you can see he rained all over my theoretical parade.

The key is trail hip...nothing else works...when trail hip moves back towards target, weight automatically moves to lead leg which is key for ball first contact...

Sorry... but in my opinion, the "average" golfer will die first before mastering striking the ball as you detail in this video... First, on a driving mat, they will probably still hit the mat before they hit the ball, and, the mat will "forgive them"... Second, they will not be looking at the ball, but in front of it-- which means they will not be looking at the first target in golf, which of course, is the BALL... So... for the most part, the "average" dude is still going to miss-hit the ball, probably worse, because they will be off in their aim and it will FEEL terrible when the hit it badly... and next, how will this correct improper club angle at IMPACT?? ("their" shots could still fly wildly left or right, depending on the degree of the lack of SQUARENESS of the head of the club) So, next, they will probably alter their backswing, change the degree of weight shift on the backswing, move the head more trying to compensate at the change in "aiming" point at the target... (and still be completely in the dark about where the ball will go in terms of the target out ahead on the actual course--) and lastly, show me a lie out on the golf course which is identical to hitting a ball off of a level, forgiving, mat on the range?? Still, it is still a good idea to hit the little ball first before you hit the big ball.. (the earth) and you, sir, have a lovely golf swing... (unfortunately, mine looks terrible on video-- but I CAN PUTT and CHIP very well...) thanks, rp

If you need to look at the ball what is the point of a practice swing?
@robertprestonsr24533 жыл бұрын
@@AliTaylorGolf The point of a practice swing?? 1.) To rehearse the type of swing and shot that one intends to hit 2.) to loosen the muscles which will be used to execute that shot... 3.) to perhaps adjust to the length of the club you are about to use to hit the shot.. 4.) to try to gain confidence and relax before you attempt the actual shot..5.) to adjust to any deviation from a standard address-- say, for example, if you are trying to play a "knock down" shot from a ball position toward the back foot-- driving the ball forward with a low height and more spin than usual-- as opposed to a "flop shot" wedge that gets up high fast and lands softly.... etc. etc... But how does this relate at all to trying to get the club to reach the low point of impact ahead of the actual position of the ball?? What do you do with a buried lie? or a lie hitting off bare hard pan?? or a ball deep down in the rough?? or a ball sitting "up" on top of the rough?? I guess I am stupid, because I do not see the value or point of this video.. UNLESS you are practicing on a driving range type mat on a very flat surface.. yours.. rp
