Thanks for a great video! This is something I’ve hear a lot of pros talking about but at the same time also talking about the release. Thats where it gets really confusing for me…the club shaft tilting forward and at the same time having the back hand passing the front hand at impact. Could you explain that Ali? Thanks for a great channel! (Excuse any language errors…I’m swedish😅)

Great advice, Ali! I pulled something in my back a few weeks ago. I took several days off and then played with my dad. I played from his tees, just planning on taking half swings and patting it around with him and seeing how my back felt. The ball was flying off the face with driver - straight, beautiful boring trajectory, lots of roll. I checked Arccos during the round and I was hitting the ball as far or even further than I usually do on that course. I normally hit a good drive around 240 and I had several that were 240 and more with the half-to-3/4 swings. Even better - I didn't have the high-on-the-face pop ups that I usually do. My strikes were just so much better. I think it's all about the sequencing. When you're planning on swinging slower, you naturally first bring it back slower. That sets the whole sequence up and gives everything time to unfold the way it's supposed to. If I have a wide, slow takeaway I have a better chance of letting that happen. Now if I could just remember that all the time!

We all have an optimum tempo. A rhythm that is unique to each of us. It’s why you can distinguish a person from their walk. When you understand your own rhythm, it will become a lot easier to make clean and solid contact with the ball. The tendency is to go beyond your own natural pace, it’s very rare that players fall below their natural speed. Ali is 100% right. Compression is what generates distance.
Thanks LabGorilla. I am 63 now so I think I have got slower with age. I gave the game up for 19 years, till my daughter decided she wanted to play lol. I had forgotten a lot. My new clubs have helped. I have moved from a package set to a proper set. I have picked up 15 yards per club because the new set is 4 degrees shallower per club. So shaft lean isn't as critical as it was with my old ones.

It comes down to sequencing. When people swing fast they tend to hit with the upper body. When they think they're swinging slower, they actually clear the hips first and then deliver the club at the correct time with more lag. When the pro's want to hit it harder they clear the body more and do nothing differently with the arms / upper body.
Yes I struggle bit time getting compression... Since I as 10 year old started playing golf. Still today, at 53 I struggle. Wonder if all my junior training back in the days, had focus on proper compression...think not.

Funnily enough I was playing about on the range with this sort of thing yesterday, Ali, before I saw this. I hit my 7 iron 70 yards with an 8 o clock to 4 o clock swing. which is only 20 yards short of my 12 o clock to 6 o clock half swing distance. I do get too much height with my irons, so I am guessing that there is not enough shaft lean there. I will have to work on it, thanks for this, Ali.
All my clubs from PW to 3 wood go about 100 yards. I am afraid the cost to fix this is going to be considerable.
@EricBrubacher7 ай бұрын
Do I still try and create some shaft lean with ball then ground strike ahead with hybrids and 3 wood as you have described with irons.

I used to hit my 8 iron 150 yards. Unfortunately at age 69, it now goes only 120 yards. As I age the eye hand coordination and swing speed don’t improve. Hoping by swinging slower as you show, I can pick up another 10 yards with all my clubs.

Worked on this for about 3-4 rounds. Hitting the "half swings" (more likely 3/4) within 5-10 yards of my hardest swings, but 20 yards straighter. Murdering flag sticks like it's my job. In four rounds I went 84, 78, 76, 74 at the local muni. (4 rounds, 3 weeks, zero range time)

So when I tried what you said, I immediately introduced right hand manipulation which led to a significantly closed club face, and some serious manipulation to square the club face. If I was turning properly, then I would not have to manipulate my hands as much and I am square at impact and compressing the ball, even with a smooth tempo. Any thoughts on that? I know its hard to comment on a swing you haven't seen. Loved the instruction... just wanted to clarify so I could get it right. Thanks!
@jeffreyyoungblood74383 жыл бұрын
Try relaxing the arms more. The over manipulating is probably from being tense. The truly efficient golf swing should be relaxed and almost effortless.

I think when people say that someone has swung too fast, what they really mean is that one part of their swing is ahead of another. Yes, we know that a faster head-speed will generally give more distance, that all depends on us sequencing the swing properly in a smooth tempo.
@sirmichaelhunt10872 ай бұрын
swinging slower overall helps with balance and weight transfer for me. When I swing too fast, I tend to leave the club face open and it leaks right. I started slowing my downswing which caused me to square the face at impact. I guess the saying "less is more" is actually true. 😅
@rickcudmore81563 жыл бұрын
That first shot is what was happening on my last round. I will be attempting this soon. As a lefty my 9i and wedges are going right of the pin, do I need to raise my hands in order to align the club face?
@canyonaro3 жыл бұрын
No, just get the back of your hand more towards the target. Knuckles down. I struggle with this too and when I do the drill I hit rope hooks just to get that feeling of not being afraid it's gonna go right. Because once you get in that position the club is much more closed so you don't have to flip it like you're used to.

I agree that shaft lean and higher smash factor make your ball go further but doesn't this lower your ball flight and provide for a lower descent angle and longer roll out on the green? How do you determine the amount of compression / lower ball flight is ideal?
@pcolli013 жыл бұрын
If you are compressing the ball , the ball is gonna roll up the grooves which will initiate backspin and carry the ball up into the air because of the backspin created, VS if you try and sorta scoop the ball and not necessarily hit down on the ball you arent gonna roll the ball up the grooves. Its just gonna clank off the club face . Make sense kinda?
@kirkjerram19032 жыл бұрын
To hit that shot and get more compression, more yardage you’ve got to get lower in your golf swing !! normally on the transit between your back swing and thru swing and especially to get into that same impact position as this guy in the video … Swinging slower and changing your grip is not going to help when your early extending / standing up / flipping everything and de-lofting the clubs.. just a thought 💭 The instructor in the video has a great swing tho , weight shift , pressure down and hips forward on impact I want to know more on that 🤩

It allows the low point to be more after the ball, helping create good strike and more control of clubface and path

I encourage everyone to hit some balls with a really strong grip. You’ll discover “feels” that you’ve never felt before. If you’re someone that stalls your body, and releases the club too soon, the ball will go hard left. You’re gonna be FORCED to rotate more, and side bend more to be able to hold the face off, and hold off the “release”. I’m not telling you to play this way, but just give it a try. You’ll thank me for it. lol
@smoker39982 жыл бұрын
I love your videos. Please allow me to address a grammatical issue. One hits the ball FARTHER not Further. Farther connotes physical distance, further is used for figurative distance. The trick, or trouble with English if you will, is that both words can be used as a verb, adjective, and adverb. So, generally farther is for actual distance and further is best used for non literal distance. Thank you for using 'well' instead of 'good' nearly 100% of the time correctly.

I just can’t understand how the ball would go farther if I don’t engage my wrists until after contact. How long does the ball stay on the club?
@achav0123 жыл бұрын
It doesn't. When you compress the ball and let the club do the job of getting the ball on the air, you add spin and distance. You don't need the ball to "stay on the club". The height you get when compressing the ball is a combination of spin rate, because when you hit down on the ball, it'll spin a lot more, (that's why you'll see better players being able to spin the ball on greens) and the loft of the club. Just don't ever thing you need to lift the ball or help the ball into the air, compress it and trust that the club will do the work. Just take note that if you are casting the club and you start to compress it, you'll probably gain 2-clubs worth of distance.
