When I first got digital hearing aids the amount of background noise terrified me. Y'all live in a noisy world. Sometimes I take them out and enjoy the silence.

Great information, thanks. I'm about to get Phonak Paradise HA with Roger On and this will help a lot. Retired, Age 71, many hours spent in silence or quiet environments seems to diminish hearing ability. Sometimes the brain has a small latency in figuring out what was said even though you heard it. Good to know there are applications to help.

I have hearing aids thanks to videos from Dr. Cliff. I will look into auditory training, However, there is one environment where NOTHING helps me. A totally enclosed concrete walls, ceiling, and tile floors with noise. The room was not large enough for an echo. But, similar to a reverb. My hearing aids seemed to be zero assistance. I live in Mexico half the year, 8 hours south of Phoenix. Construction is primarily concrete and tile. Of course, no sound deadening at all. I tend to only wear my hearing aids if I expect to be in challenging auditory situations - like restaurants, group meetings, brew pubs. Do you think that auditory training would be of significant help in the Most challenging auditory environments? Or, would I be better off with a bluetooth microphone device that I place near the person I wish to hear?
@rachaelcookaud2695
@rachaelcookaud2695 Жыл бұрын
If you only wear your hearing aids in challenging environments, they will continue to be challenging! Your brain has to adapt to these sounds again through exposure. Quiet and calm environments allow for a level of control over the sounds. Think of it like running a marathon - gotta walk before you run! Otherwise, you run and run and burn out quickly, get super sore, and think running isn't for you. Very similar with hearing aids. Start with the easy environments and work your way up to the harder ones!

I have tinnitus and have trouble hearing in noisy environments. I went to an Audioilogist where she gave me a Cadillac quality hearing aid to wear for 3 weeks. Wearing it would train the brain to filter out the noise. About a week in, my wife and I went to a house party and I thought, oh good now I can really put it to the test. I downloaded the app for the devise and I could save settings depending on the environment. ie: a bar, restaurant, gym etc. So, got to the party hoping for at least some improvement. None. Went to a restaurant after another week and the same result. There is not a hearing aid out there that will discern the difference between background noise and the voices of people that you want to hear. I expected the devise to, at the very least meet my hearing needs half way. It was nowhere near. I was then expected to believe that my "trained" brain would pick up the slack. Hmm! I'd love to know the percentage of those with these expensive hearing aids especially the elderly who suffer in silence, too embarrassed to admit that maybe their brain isn't learning or who won't speak up and call out this training nonsense. Tinnitus sufferers need a hearing aid that will cancel noise, ie eliminate high background noise frequencies and knows enough to boost the voice of the person speaking to you. Some of these hearing apps for your phone are really good all except for the delay in recieving the signal which can be annoying. Collectively you need to get it into your heads that who cares if the volume is louder as long as the noise is gone. We're old and we want to hear. How difficult can that be?

Dr. Cook. Add a high pass filter to the speech channel/bus of your audio mixing software to get rid of some of the annoying rumble that is audible in the background.

Timing is everything. I've only been using HA for 2 months, Phonak Lumity Life series 90. But my experience this past Saturday in a restaurant with moderate background noise was horrendously bad. I simply could not understand the people at my table no matter what program I tried even with Beam Forming. My reverse slope hearing loss was winning (severe low frequency loss and mild to mod. high frequency loss) . Until I tried an experiment. I removed my HA. The background noise dropped and I was able to hear the conversations much better. I did this 3 additional times to confirm and it worked all 3 times. I repeated the procedure the next day in a noisy convention center and again removing my HA helped me hear the close in conversations better. I believe my HA are programmed correctly as my AUD is in your network. But we will be discussing this in detail next week at my appointment. This was very discouraging. I do know he planned on putting my in the booth for additional testing. Should be interesting. Thanks for great content:)
