You know how I know your are right? I'm 68 and struggled my whole life playing lousey golf. Just this year after years of painful analysis, I came to the exact same conclusion you did. One thing more, and Pete Cowan said this too. Practice holding the club with the trail hand all the way down to the shaft. The feeling you get is one of a consistent solid strike. Then using that feel, bring the hands back together and you'll hit it a little farther. You soon realize that the left hand passes the ball first then the right hand delivers the blow in perfect timing. I must have watched, I don't know, maybe 5,000 instructional videos and now I'm done. One last thing. Most of us are right eye dominant. The vast majority of tour players are right handed, but, they are LEFT eye dominant. This is a fact! So now I look at the ball with my left eye and my entire perspective has improved too. Jack Nichlaus taught this too! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Let them all go nuts with useless instructions. I now play to my highest ability!

Thank you. The fact is that I was very lucky and was born with only a “ touch” of CP. It resulted in a lack of muscle flexibility. You ca see in the opening (when I was eighteen) the swing was much more fluid. But at 66 years of age, when everyone gets stiffer I am much more so. It’s a pain and I’ve lost a lot of distance but I can still play from the senior tees relatively well.

i enjoyed your video and ideas about the swing. i'm 72 and for years i looked at how the pros get their hands way over the head and that's what i was trying to do and never got that right even when i was young. so i started just going back as far as i could which was where my hands are about shoulder height and it works out so much better and hit it decently about 220 total with the driver and 140 with a 7 iron. i can play with that, i've been a 13 hdcp for 30 years and just can't seem to get it down but always trying. thnx and good golfin to ya.

I'm 71 and the only way to improve your handicap is spend more time on your short game. I practice at public courses in Oklahoma City, all of them charge $3.50 for 30 balls, so a full basket will cost $7 total. I see some golfers hitting a full basket and then go retrieve another, & another, etc, which obviously can get expensive over time trying to improve. The odd thing, they could actually improve their game without spending money, only just more practice time, on the "free" practice areas instead, i.e. putting green, chipping green, & sand bunkers. Typically, golfers hit straight to the driving range rather than the short game practice areas. I practice on my short game areas first, then hit the driving range, but only limit myself to 30 balls. My driving range routine is to pretend playing holes on the course. For a Par 5, hit driver than fairway or hybrid club, then an approach shot with wedge. For a Par 4, hit driver then an approach shot with a hybrid or iron. For a Par 3, hit iron to different flags on the range. With these three hole rotation, I hit 6 balls. With 30 balls, I can play 15 holes of golf, rather than rack one ball after another, hitting balls all over the range! Another mindset...don't worry about your handicap & just play golf for fun!
@TheForgottenGolfer
@TheForgottenGolfer Жыл бұрын
Too many folks think practicing the short game is boring-everyone wants to hit the driver… but putting and chipping is where the low scoring comes from.

@@TheForgottenGolfer I practice my putting on the greens with only one ball…practice like you play! Also, I change up with different style putters. I have a standard 35” mallet & a armlock mallet. Dave Stockton made these practice suggestions…and no practice stokes!
@TheForgottenGolfer
@TheForgottenGolfer Жыл бұрын
As far as putting practice goes-You do what makes YOU most comfortable. When I played competitively I never would putt on the practice greens of a course I didn’t know-I chipped to them instead. In most cases the practice green speed and roll was nothing like the course greens.

Good grip, posture, ball position, aim, good takeaway and load up, swing easy so your arms can keep up with what your legs are doing and so you don’t move around too much while swinging and stay in your posture through impact. You do all that, you’ll have at very least a “decent” shot, and often a great shot!

Most of the adjustments I make to my swing now have to be made because of my flexibility. You were kind to say “good posture” I can’t keep my back as straight as I’d like to. But I think that’s why I’ve had such success in the site. Many now are in the same boat. So I’m hoping to prove to many that they can still play well even if they can’t move well. Oh to know what I know now when I was 16 yrs. of age.

Very funny. Your motion is exactly what I recommend to anyone who asks me. I'm 68, a tad more flexible and stronger than you IMHO. I just rotate the pelvis and hips very fast at impact, which gives enough speed to add yards. So let me congrat you for this sensible advice. It's all what any golfer should learn to get solid strokes anytime, I fully agree 😉.

I observe you using your arms from the top to swing the club perfectly on plane propelling the ball in the direction of the target. Very nice! However, most of us recreational golfers appear to use our shoulders coming over the top of the plane because of our intention to hit the ball, propelling it either to the left or slicing it to the right. Does not succumbing to this overpowering "hit impulse" destroy most swings?
@TheForgottenGolfer
@TheForgottenGolfer Жыл бұрын
If you have to swing hard so be it--just try to use a good pre shot routine and lean on timing and see if that helps you keep the wheels on.
@mikerodrick2430
@mikerodrick2430 Жыл бұрын
THAT is the downfall of nearly every amateur swing. We all have a great practice swing but when the ball is added everything changes. The practice swing has no effect on your score so there's no mental pressure or swing thoughts to paralyze you at address. The hit impulse is the hardest thing to get rid of.
@TheForgottenGolfer

You lose it after a while on the driving range-the swing becomes more of a move. If you can’t afford to go to the driving range often then but a bag of plastic balls and hit them in your yard.

I enjoyed coming across this. I agree with you.. too much junk and minutia out there. Coming from a baseball background, I always got the feel you're talking about, with the bottom portion of the swing coming into it square. Then all these videos make you feel like there 'has to be more,' and that what you are doing is incorrect. After working severely hard at getting good at golf, I'm coming up on my 3rd season this June and am just about at scratch. My goal is to make the PGA and I just turned 46. Any advice from you, I will gladly take. i appreciate you.

My advice. Stick to your day job. I just got back from watching the Monday qualifying for the Honda Classic here in Florida. All you have to do to match those guys is be about 330 to 350 off the tee. Hit your irons crisp and long. Get up and down from anywhere. Putt lights out. At 46 you have zero chance of matching these wannabe s let alone the exempt PGA Tour players.

@@TheForgottenGolfer I agree with you completely. There's varying levels of amateur and the term is used so loosely. There's many amateur's who can play on the pro level, but they don't go after it. Going into year 3 and shooting 70's and early 80's, I think there's a strong chance eventually.

This old buck has got an excellent move through the ball I assume from doing exactly what he is suggesting his viewers to do. I once watched Gary Player on the practice range do pretty much what this video suggests. Player hit shot after shot with different clubs at about 50% speed. He was grooming his tempo and his ball contact. Won’t argue with a guy that has won 9 majors or the guy that made this video because what they do works.

Thanks J. The fact is that when you take the distance factor out and just try for 70 yards it relaxes the muscles and you don’t grab the club as hard and as a result have a better release point through the ball.
Hit it longer and keep your accuracy and consistency!
