Hi Henry! A bonus tip to your bonus tip. 😉 I read somewhere that if you want to nail your composition temporarily switch to B&W. It will soon become obvious if the composition is weak. You can then decide whether to shoot in B&W or switch back to colour. Of course if you shoot RAW then you have the luxury of being able to decide later at home.

Hi mate, thanks a lot for that, brilliant tip!!

Another awesome video, I am thoroughly enjoying catching up on all of your videos. I know that for me, when I am out and shooting the small, minimal things, I try and take a flash. It adds a little light on the small subject you are shooting.

I think the difference for me, between the two, is that the minimalist photos draw the viewers attention straight to the one subject.

This is so good. This is why I do minimalist subjects, just for the viewer to focus on.

I have really struggled with composition. The last year I have tried to focus on improving seeing the image in my head before I take it. I've gotten better and your videos and advice on composition have definitely helped. But I think some people are more gifted with a creative mind than me. But if that's all my struggle is, then I'm doing alright.

Hailing from Proper up North (Scandinavia) I have always preferred simple and minimalist photography whenever the opportunity presents itself, including when I’m out shooting landscapes. Thank you for highlighting this mode of shooting for those who have not tried it yet. Both styles display calmness and simplicity and in my humble opinion they belong in the same ‘group’.

I like your question about what constitutes 'minimalism' vs. 'simple composition.' I look at minimalism as a tendency rather than having a set definition or set of 'standards.' I like to try to minimize distractions while still retaining some sense of place.

I like your BW suggestion. I set my camera to capture jpeg and Raw, and have the jpeg set to BW. That way I’m seeing the scene in BW. If I want color, I still have the Raw.

Cheers Henry, it’s Sean in Atlanta! I enjoyed this video but I have to tell you that I sold my Nikon Z5 and two lenses the other day to KEH. I have purchased an Olympus EM5 MIII and enjoy it so much, and I’m so impressed with the image quality, that the full frame Nikon didn’t hold a candle to it! I seem to be a slave to GAS! But seriously, the image quality out of this tiny camera and two primes and a 14-42mm zoom, is absolutely breathtaking! I hope you are well and thanks for another brilliant video! Sean

Hi Sean, thanks for the comment as always! That sounds like a great changeup and if you are enjoying the gear then that's the main thing! I must get out with my OM-5 sometime soon!

@@HenryTurnerphoto don’t get me wrong, the Nikon Z5 is a magnificent camera! I just could not justify having two systems and the more that I reviewed my images, I preferred the OLYMPUS images. I’m guessing you understand as you have that wonderful OM5!

Great tips again Henry. Sometimes it a nice change trying minimalist shots from own garden as opposed to great hikes and climbs. I like the dark almost black backgrounds you can get of close up shots to enhance to subject especially when done in a square crop.

Henery, I believe there is a difference between “simple” and “minimalist” compositions, it is intent. There different is intent. “Simple” compositions abound if you look for them. A “minimalist” composition also takes extra action/thought on the part of the photographer to remove further distractions like longer shutter speeds and the such…. Just my opinion added for thought and comment…. Love you channel and content.. As always, keep snapping…

Definitions of minimalism will have some variance I suspect but for me Henry, I regard it as the image having one subject or a small group which results in the eye not wandering much about the image and creating the perception of simplicity.
@HenryTurnerphoto3 ай бұрын
Seems about spot on to me mate. I was trying hard to not overcomplicate what is a simple concept by its very nature haha. Thanks for watching as always 👍🏻
@rrrosecarbinela3 ай бұрын
I'd say both styles of photograph fall under the same umbrella, but the seascape is also very stark -- just a minuscule amount of elements, basically straight lines in this example, and a lot of negative space. Your "simple" photograph has a lot of elements to delight the eye -- the colors, the light gradient, the grasses, the reflections...and the negative space takes up less of the frames
@chrispietryga87103 ай бұрын
That just inspired me to get out with my camera again....been months since I last went out with it. Simplicity is the key to many of our endeavours in this increasingly complex and confusing life...In my personal opinion. On a lighter note....I counted eight bunny rabbits in that video! 😁
@HenryTurnerphoto3 ай бұрын
Fantastic, I agree! I honestly didn't see any rabbits, are you sure they weren't dogs?! Perhaps I was concentrating so much on talking haha

Great video Henery, I shoot a lot of flowers and I'm a big fan of using f/8 and my cameras built in flash to get that wonderful black background negative space you speak of while really lighting up my subject to bring out all of the details. / Perhaps you could do a video sometime and demonstrate how easy it is to get that black background using f/8 and flash combination. / good shooting mate !

Is there a crossover between abstract and minimalist or just down to interpretation?
@HenryTurnerphoto3 ай бұрын
Probably mate, I’ve also felt there’s crossovers in abstract, minimalist and even intimate photography- but that’s just me!

🤔 they are similar but, to me at least, the minimalist composition also has a sense of abstraction compared to the simple composition…
