Learn how to bias fold your quilt with this simple tutorial! Folding your quilts on the bias will prevent deep creases that can weaken your quilt over time.
The "best" way to store your quilt is lying flat, but that's not possible for most of us. If you need to fold your quilt to store it away, the bias fold will help lengthen the lifespan of your quilt while it's in storage!
For a photo tutorial and more information about folding your quilts for storage, read this blog post:

*As with all things quilting, your quilt = your rules. There's no quilt police around here! This is simply a suggestion to help lengthen the lifespan of your quilts. Few times are there truly a “right” way to do things when it comes to quilting!*

This video simply offers a way to fold a quilt to reduce deep wrinkles in our everyday quilts while they are in storage. There are certainly multiple ways to fold and store quilts. (Your quilt = your rules!) If you're looking for information about quilt preservation or storing fragile quilts, I suggest this article: extensionpublications.unl.edu/assets/pdf/g1820.pdf. Happy quilting, friends!

Missouri Star Quilt Company also has a video that shows that they fold all of their hundreds of quilts on the bias as well for storage. Thank you for this well done, quick video reminder!

I did not know this info about folding quilts for seasonal storing, but I will definitely pull my quilts out and refold them. They have been washed, I just put them away yesterday

This is great information. The only quilt I have in "long term storage" is an embellished crazy quilt made by my legally blind mother just before she passed. She knit and crocheted all her life, memorizing hundreds of stitches, but this was her only quilt. As you can imagine it is very precious to me. Would you fold a crazy quilt differently because of the embroidery and embellishments, like buttons and lace?
@HaileyStitches
@HaileyStitches 6 ай бұрын
Wow that sounds like a treasure! I would probably fold it the same, but with the embellishments on the inside. Maybe layer a clean sheet over top so the embellishments don't snag on each other? Maybe someone else in the comments will have an idea, too!

Use acid free paper between the folds to keep any embellishments from causing an issue.

Thanks for this. Just wondering why you would fold with "right" side out rather than backing out? Just makes more sense to me in order to lessen any outside issues on quilt.

You can do it either way! I do it this way so I can easily see what quilt it is, but totally understand if you’d want the top folded on the inside.

Thanks for sharing this folding method. I was wondering how to fold my quilts before placing them on the quilt ladder. Do you have advice on containers to store quilts in?
@HaileyStitches
@HaileyStitches 6 ай бұрын
It depends on how careful you want to be with your quilts. An archival box would be good storage for an heirloom quilt. It’s best to keep them in a temperature controlled environment (not basement or attic) so a linen closet or spare bedroom are good options. Just make sure they aren’t stored on anything that could leech into the fabric (acid, paint, etc) and have a chance to breathe. I’ve seen some people make pillow cases for them to keep them clean too! I’m not too precious about my quilts so I would store them in a plastic storage bin even though I’ve seen some say that’s a no-no (not breathable).

Folding on the bias is perfectly fine, but it’s not the one right way to do it. I’ve been involved with museums for decades, and it is not common for museums to fold quilts/textiles on the bias. The International Quilt Museum has thousands of quilts; in fact, the largest publically held collection of quilts in the world, and none of them are folded on the bias before placing them in acid free boxes, rapped with acid free paper. They are re-folded on a regular schedule ever year or two.

I too have been taught to refold on a regular basis. Also washing with a ph neutral soap. I have a special soap for quilts. Been doing this since 1980 with a quilt my grandmother made as a young woman. And stored in a white pillow case. Never plastic.

How about say it’s “one way” to fold quilts. The most important thing is to re-fold the quilt while stored.

Umm, I think a museum that specializes in quilts. Might be right since they are in the business of preserving historical items .

I certainly don't think this is the only way to fold a quilt for storage. It's just one option to help lessen the likelihood of deep wrinkles. I'm just sharing what works for me (and see the disclaimer in my description - I don't think there's one right way to do anything when it comes to quilting!) ☺
