unique version ... aquaponics is not unique ... but HOW you did it is awesome ... not only does it provide food but it also provides something to look at when sitting out on the back patio having the morning coffee or whatever .. . I would suggest putting a mesh over the fish tank portion to keep cats and the like from going after the fish ... and to keep large debris out ... something liek a 1/4 inch mesh top slide off top or hinged top and your laughing

this is not an aquarium. Its acquaphonics. Becuase the filtration and aeration is quite a few times more efficient than an aquarium the fishes are quite happy. In 500 lliters of water, I had 25 LARGE tilapia. The water remains clear and clean. It has a greenish grey tinge from the chelated iron put in as a supplement to help fix iron deficiencies and to ensure the plants maintain healthy and vigorous growth. Iron has a number of important functions in the overall metabolism of the plant and is essential for the synthesis of chlorophyll. If you feed the fish high quality feed and fresh food, you end up with harvestable fish without any muddy or riverine smell.

I want to make something like this so bad! Using the bamboo is really nice. When I make mine I'll try to build it to reduce the water fall sound, and use it to house turtles instead. Instead of painting the concrete I would have left the crackling texture all around the surface. I'd also design it to hide the PVC tubing where possible.

@Sanguis as an avid aquaponics farmer who has done years of research, even with the fish being consumed, they are still in a water source much much too small! Not only is this possibly ignorant human selfishness on the part of the builder/farmer, but also what was the “cement” used and does it release any toxins into the water over time that will in turn change the waters balance? I guess everyone could be doing some research lol 🤷‍♀️

@Sanguis If they're there to be eaten, it would have been much more economical to buy them young and let them grow, rather than buy them fully matured, at their most expensive, and risk losing them to illness caused by overcrowding in a small tank for several weeks. It's about keeping your food healthy. But yeah, sure. "Moralistic BS".

The biological filtration of just the root wicking material is quite insufficient unless I missed something here. Pretty sure you would need much more substrate to proper cycle. The project itself is wonderful, don't get me wrong. I would be looking to increase the biological filtration medium significantly for an "aquaponic" solution involving fish of this scale.

Its a good idea, but would like to see gravel, although I accept this might be detrimental for such large fish and so many. Not happy with their confined space. With so much cement used I feel the alkalinity of the water would need more than one change, probably regular changes for quite a period, but as we do not know if the cement was waterproof maybe not.

Several issues I have with this, First as has been mentioned the bio load on this system by those huge fish is way to much. Which leads me to the second problem, there is no bio-filter. You need a bio-filter to turn the ammonia into Nitrates for the plants to use. Not to mention to prevent from poising the fish. Lastly it's the friction fit of the tank drain, that could slip off and drain the tank at some point and good bye fish.

The the cotton/synthetic stuff in the cups could host bacteria, or he could put something in the 1st hole where the water poured though. But it needed to be cycled, especially with such a massive load. Maybe he did daily water changes to get it going. But, I have a feeling this design just didn't work because the cups seemed to be well out of the water as it passed through the bamboo. If they were touched by the water, it was maybe enough to keep them damp, no more. The bamboo is curved and the cups are flat. Maybe cutting of the bottom of the cups so the cotton was directly in the water would solve all these problems.

Unsealed concrete is a fish killer. It continually lowers the PH of water to the point of being unsafe for fish. The white filter batting around the lettuce isn't even in contact with the bottoms of many of the cups and some cups aren't even in contact with the water in the bamboo. The lettuce would die from dehydration in many of those cups. Fish of that size are in no way appropriate for that size of a tank. It's cruel to keep them in a tank that is so overcrowded and small for them. 18 days later, my ass. Bamboo discolours in water and it does not take long at all. Somehow in those 18 days, not a single speck of algae grew anywhere in the tank, in the lettuce cups, in the bamboo, nowhere. Nuh huh, don't believe that for a second. With that many fish producing that much waste in a newly set up tank, there would be such an ammonia and nitrate spike, the algae would be going wild! Carp are notoriously filthy fish and yet we see absolutely no waste in the water. I doubt that water pump and lettuce whose roots that aren't even able to properly reach the water would be up to the task of handling the waste produced by fish that large. I'm willing to bet all they did for that 18 day shot was switch the lettuce out for larger ones and throw water hyacinth in the tank to make it look different. The concept is a really nice idea but it's painfully obvious this was made purely to farm content and not be a properly sustainable tank.

Gorgeous, functional build! I'd add some hard scape to the tank portion, to hide the pump and water line, if nothing else! But a rotating, display/livestock tank, all working hydroponically together... That's going to bring about some good eats!! Great jobs!!

From the looks of this video, this might have been made in Thailand where American alligator gars were introduced invasively, and so might be used as a throwaway fish, like pet store goldfish that we all buy, but know that they won't live longer than a few weeks.
