When our dog was a puppy we played youtube clips of thunderstorms and fireworks while playing with him and while he was in his crate sleeping. We gradually increased the sound until it was quite loud. Worked a charm and he's now 18 months old and has zero fear of either. Veronica is adorable!

I can relate to this - Bree: "you normally pay attention to me, why not now?" I have asked that very same question soooo many times. My dog Brooklyn is a rescue, we've had her 5 months and she's about a year and a half old. Starting from scratch with her as she did not know ANYTHING when we adopted her. Watching the previous different training series' with older dogs, then with Biscuits and now Veronica is helping me to train Brooklyn even though she's not a puppy anymore. A little harder to do as she already had some undesirable habits that have been challenging to overcome (think George, Chop and Moira). I really enjoyed Bree taking the lead on this video, I hope it continues. Having both Zak and Bree explaining different parts of the training sessions was nice.🙂 Thanks!!

I'm so glad you mentioned fear periods! So many trainers don't, and most people don't know that their puppies go through 2 fear periods. My boys developed the oddest random fears during their second fear periods. My older corgi decided he's afraid of laundry in the dryer when the door is open and the dryer is NOT running. He's fine if the door is closed. He's also developed a fear of plastic bags. My younger corgi decided fluffy white dogs and dogs taller than him are terrifying. We're still working on getting past those fears and they're 4 & 6 now.

One technique that has really worked with my pandemic, naturally skittish dachshund-Jack Russell puppy is to “charge up” the word Friend. Once I did this I say it before I see something (usually strangers and bigger dogs, when he’s on leash) and it does seem to catch him before he gets fearful and is more willing to see that thing as a friend, rather than fear

Definitely believe that ending on a positive note is best! That way when they remember their last session... it's a positive memory. Even if you have to take the training all the way back to the simplest command for the dog to succeed. 👍🏼

I recommend my clients who have puppies in the early socialization time to take them (in the cart) into your local box hardware store, CVS, Target so they can see/hear tons of things without being on the ground. Lots of great noises, things and people to see. I have them set up a blanket or towel in the bottom of the cart so they are comfy. If the pup is super young, carrying them in a baby bundler or the like can give them that life experience without danger of Parvo too. Great fun.

Good idea with Lowe's and Home Depot. Dogs are not allowed in Target or CVS unless they are service pups. If you're able to visit at these locations, the store has a dog-friendly manager.

The ‘fear periods’ are similar to something I’ve observed with small children. Up to about age 5, as they reach each new level of independence, they tend to become more nervous and clingy for a little bit as the new level of freedom, independence and boundaries are established and the solid fact of mom/dad and expectations etc are reaffirmed.

When I got Marzieh she was 8weeks old. I put a Martingale collar on her and put her food in a metal bowl. Big panic. She hides freezes and shakes when she hears 2 iron metal things knocking together. I changed the collar and the food bowl straight away! Things were going great until the day I took her to the vet last year. We were walking along a narrow pavement when a series of empty lorries went by with cranes on the back. The cranes made very loud metal noises and Marzieh did the full panic. I wasn’t expecting noisy vehicles to go past. I wasn’t able to work on this until last Friday which was her third birthday. The world famous Appleby Horse Fair is happening so I took her to where a lot of traffic was going by. There were a few big vans which made her wary. But the very scary thing was horseshoes clopping. I worked on the problem with treats and I got her to the point when she looked for the treat instead of diving for cover!

It was so cute when Veronica was falling asleep in Bree's lap. 🧡 Have we started guessing her breed? I'm usually pretty accurate with adults; but puppies, they're more challenging for me to guess. I'm going to weigh in anyway. The hair was making me think Golden Retriever; but the color made me think, possibly Irish Setter? I was also getting the potential of German Shepherd. Then, her markings made me think Beagle. Those ears though, they have me stumped. Do any of my guesses line up with yours? Hmm.... the speckles of the feet have me questioning my earlier Beagle assumption. I didn't know you had a cat?!? I don't recall ever seeing her. Maybe, I just forgot. That's how I feel about harnesses. When I'm trying to teach a dog not to pull, I feel the harnesses is safer than anything that will put pressure on her neck. In my "book", my dog's safety and security come first.

Hey Zak, I had a quick question. I got a black lab puppy about 6 months ago. We've since had to move states and while I was using positive reinforcement (and using your videos for help) we did seek out the help of a professional dog trainer who stated he used positive reinforcement as well (only before we paid him). Since then, he has told me that he uses prong collars to teach the dogs to walk on a leash and other methods I'm not sure I agree on. (Including dragging the dog into place by force if he doesn't want to go and actively forcing the dog to do things like pulling on his leash to get him out of the car). Do you have any tips on communicating with the trainer in an effective way? We have already paid him and it wasn't cheap, so I'd like to be able to have a conversation with him but I also don't want my dog to have negative responses because of training methods used.

My 11 week old Lab puppy is so very non-reactive to the weather. First night he was with us, I had to take him out to potty in a full on thunderstorm. No problems. No reaction to the noise, the rain, the thunder. He reacts a bit to lawnmowers and cars, but more in the sense that he's watchful. He's a very quiet dog, unless he's demanding MY attention.

I have a husky puppy named lunchbox and he’s pretty contradictory with being scared too.he constantly challenges my two adult dogs at home, they will have their meanest face possible on and growl at him very angrily and he doesn’t care at all and will continue to do whatever they’re annoyed with. But when i take him other places and he meets new dogs, he’s very scared of them at first if they get too excited. It’s really weird to me because in my experience huskies are very “full throttle” as i say 🤣 lunchbox is just on 100 ALL THE TIME but when he’s out and meets another dog that’s like that, it scares him.

Im having trouble training my 8 wk old puppy to even sit because he instantly sits and starts itching his harness. So I don't think he's sitting on command. He just instantly sits and itches if he stops for even a second. He got his flea treatment 3 days ago so I don't believe it's that. Our newest pup just turned two on Memorial Day. Unfortunate she broke her fibula at two months old and was in a cast for several weeks. While that did not stop her from trying to get into stuff at home🙂 it delayed her outside socialization. By the time she was healthy enough it was already too late. She failed her six-week training course at PerSmart. At two she has to be tranquilizer and muzzled for vet visits for grooming, immunizations and health checkups. Help!!!

Hi there, I was playing with my dog 2 days ago as I always do and threw her toy and she looked at me straight in the eyes and wait for me to say "take it". However, all of sudden she became super confused and afraid. She did that twice where she would look at me, "sniff me" and then go away. The day after, I litterally could not enter a room where she was or she was living. Now she is coming to me again but she is afraid of any toys or me if I get nearby the toys. I do not know what happened and I do not know what to do. :-(

My tibetan terriër is 15 weeks now, when she is scared or unsure she first tries to run away but as I have her on a leash she cant so she does the next best thing ,she sits and observe the situation . When we are on a walk I just walk on without talking to her and she walks besides me . Our main issue we have with her is the puppy biting. It is not possible to cuddle with her at all. She tries to bite your hands immediatly. We tried redirecting to toys she is allowed to bite in, we tried saying no and walk away, nothing really helps and when it gets to bad the only thing we can do is put her in her carte.

I’ve been watching your series on Moira which has freaked me out on what I am getting myself into. I pick the dog up tomorrow and my biggest concern right now is what to do when I go to work if he doesn’t like the crate. I only work 3 days a week, away from home for 6 hours. If he doesn’t like the crate do you have any suggestions for me what to do with him. I’m concerned he would escape from an ex own. If he will settle in the crate he could come to work with me and get 10 minutes of exercise and play every hour. If he doesn’t settle he has to stay home.
