I used to be the "one book at a time and can't DNF anything" guy. Now I usually read 4 to 5 books at the same time. Has really helped not to burn out and adding audio and e-books has increased the possibilities to read when you can easily read while commuting, doing chores etc. I usually have a fantasy book, a non-fantasy book, an e-book (usually fantasy) and an audiobook (fantasy or sci-fi) going on at the same time.

i've had friends and family make comments about my reading multiple books at once my entire life, but i feel the same as you. it really isn't any different than watching multiple tv shows at once + it really is refreshing sometimes to be able to jump between genres if you're not really feeling something at the moment. i usually limit myself to 4 books at a time, but i have 9 books going rn + it's no big deal. 🤷‍♀

As a doctoral student, I can attest to everything you’ve said. For me, it’s planning particular days to read certain things, since I have to juggle academic technical reading with my personal reading. It’s rough, but doing a little micro-managing, while being gentle with yourself really helps!

@@myoldchannel0690 Yeah, it’s rough…I’m a doctoral music student, so the micro-managing over how much time to give to reading/pleasure, learning music, memorizing music, and reading/academic can be stupid. Right now, I have an opera this weekend, memorizing for a recital in two weeks, finishing my thesis, starting reading for my lecture recital, and burning through Powder Mage Trilogy (pun intended). I get my pleasure reading done when I tell myself that I’ll read one bigger book during the work week and one shorter book on the weekend. No need to constantly read 600-1k page bricks. I just finished Malazan last month, so not going down that rabbit hole until I finish Wheel of Time next year.

I don't usually read multiple books at once but I definitely jump genres, or jump series, after each book even if i have all the books of a series in my position. It's very rare that i just go to the next book in the same series right after finishing the previous book. I always mix it up there.

Mixing genres (or at the very least sub genres). is the key for me. I can keep up with as many as four books if I do that. Most of the time I will naturally have a morning book, a lunch book, and one or two evening books, but depending on pacing it happens quite often that one of the four books gets all my attention, usually once past the 60% mark. It’s happening now with a Robert McCammon mystery that suddenly became way too suspenseful and pushed my other two books aside until I’m done. I’m doing a crime fiction month, but I went with one that’s sci-fi, one that’s Victorian, one that’s urban Fantasy and one southern gothic.

Does it ever make you DNF more on a whim though - stuff that you'd be interested in if you stayed with it? When I get that urge, I read a short story that I can be done with quickly without loosing the thread of the other book, or I just read a little sample chapter and (usually) let it drop until I want to devote the time to it.

I know exactly what you mean, when I am exited for and dead set on a certain book I will finish it in just a few days. But when I'm just reading something thats been on my shelf and I told myself I have to get over with it takes foreverrr and is so stressful when I'm only 40% done with it and I know I have better books just waiting for me to feast my eyes on.
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin Жыл бұрын
@@punkstar2001 True, but those can get better/worthwhile when you persevere, and for me, if I switch to an exciting page turner, then that's all I'll read till it's over, and it'll be all the harder to restart the thread afterwards. I'm a slow reader though, so short stories - of which I have many - are perfect for reading slumps. Sometimes the timing's wrong to challenge myself with a difficult book, so I'll put it down to restart from the beginning later.

I think reading multiple books at once is great. I'm a big mood reader and sometimes that means I'm not feeling like reading the one book I have right now, doesn't mean I don't want to finish it but just right now I want to read something else. I often times find myself having a book I read during the day (morning, lunch break) and another one I read in bed before sleep. Right this minute I'm reading one adult fantasy, a YA fantasy, a thriller and a horror book 😆I've realized that, at least in my case, I don't think I've ever had a reading slump, just a time where I was forcing myself to read something I didn't feel like reading at the time. So yeah, I'd recommend giving this a try and see if it works for you too! ❤

Loved this upload, Mike! I’m in a terrible reading slump right now. The busyness of my day to day life and simply feeling burnt out on reading has stalled my progress, but as you say, “where’s the fire.” I’ll get my spark back and maybe going back to reading multiple books at a time will help that. It’s something I used to do often, but this year I stuck to mostly reading one book at a time. It’s fine when you’re loving something, but will cripple you if you’re not. As far as discord goes, the feeling of competition can be strong. I find this often with buddy reads. We’ll be on day one of a channel readalong and several people will already be halfway done. So much for the “along” part, haha! I love buddy reads, but it can be disheartening when many leave the rest of us in the dust. But, hey, what can you do.

Great touch with the effects at the beginning of the video. I agree about reading multiple books, ... how can you not? I too read different genre's and then also use different media, physical books, kindle and audio/audible. I try to read business/current events/sports books, usually early in the day, use audio books throughout the day when driving, walking, exercising etc... , and then read with my Kindle at night before I go to sleep or when I am traveling in a plane etc... I do a lot of re-reads with audible as well. I read faster physdically and with Kindle because I use 1.0 speed on audio books. It's not about flying through books. I want to retain and enjoy the stories. The audio re-read help me get a different perspective on the book and catch a lot of things I missed while reading physically. I also switch from doing full series, to doing one shot pallette cleansers. Also change up book length reading the big chunky fantasy books, but then keeping the other genre's between 200 and 400 pages when I can. I like finishing books and keeping track, as it motivates me to read more. I think reading is so important, especially as you age, to keep you eyes and brain healthy, help with memory, etc... I love TV shows and movies as well, so I try to make smart use of streaming services and schedule time for reading and TV watching so I can do it at times that are more convenient with the rest of my life and I can enjoy them more. I also have stopped reading some books the first time I start them, because I find I am not really as committed as I should be and then I go back to that book at a better time. I am especially careful doing that with authors I love. Examples are I have put my read of Malazan on hold at book 4 but I love the Malazan world and am committed to reading all of it. I have put John Gwynne's latest, The Hunger of the God's, on hold and decided I want to go back and re-read Shadows of the Gods first. This is personal choice and works for me. Like you said, that is important. If you are not enjoying your reading then why are you doing it.

“Maybe watch less TV” for reading fast. I didn’t get this advice from this channel but I agree. About 2 years ago I got bored of scrolling through Netflix or any other streaming service and got to the same conclusion as with cable. “There’s 400 channels and nothing on”. I’ve always been interested in reading but never could commit to setting the time aside to read a book. Through researching what ti read after the lord of the rings (Wheel of Time) your channel and a few other book tubers have influenced me to stop looking for TV shows and pick up a book instead. So I can appreciate your comment about watching less TV. For anyone wanting to read more it’s definitely good advice if that is their way of relaxing after work.

I read one in ebook format and another on physical. Early on, I only read one book at a time, but now juggling two is quiet feasible. Accessibility is key for me, because ebooks are great to read in-between downtime in my job or my recess time in college. Recently, I got a lot of great scifi in my TBR because I joined the Media Death Cult channel, the scifi he recommends are all up my alley. I'm yet to pick up more horror, so far my only experience is with Stephen King and a few random authors. I also love historical fiction, which is an underrated genre on booktube.

Where I went wrong is starting so many series, but I'm still chipping away at them and enjoying the process while I do. I did have a point of being overwhelmed... I started Wheel of Time in 2017 and read about a book a year. But somehow it works for me. Reading multiple books at a time isn't for me, though. I take about a week to read a standard 400 page book, sometimes a month to read 1000+ pg bricks. I've taken a break before and read a book and came back (Malazan 😄), but I guess it just doesn't feel natural for me, lol! I do mix up genres. I'm all across the map in the course of a season. I read horror, followed by historical fiction, followed by fantasy and then throw in a thriller.

I've really struggled the past couple of years with just feeling inadequate. You know more than most, but I haven't been able to read as much lately, and it really has affected me mentally. I would get really down about 'only' reading 2 or 3 books a month, and then it got to where I was so upset about it that I just wasn't reading at all. I'm getting better about just reading at my own pace, and if I only read 1-3 a month... well, that's better than none! It's just hard sometimes to see some videos where they've read like 10 or 15 books a month, but I try to remind myself that most of those people don't have full time jobs. If I didn't have to work 40 hours a week, I'm sure I'd read more than I do now!

In this regard, I think I am almost the polar opposite of Mike. My wife and I actually don't watch more than one show at a time. Right now, we're watching The Office all the way through and not touching another TV show until it's done. As a result, we feel really invested in the characters, even though it's just a silly sitcom. On the book front, I like to take my time. I don't want to finish as many books in as little time as possible. I read almost nothing but fantasy. And when I do, I just want to get into a particular world, soak in it, really savour it and get as immersed as possible. Finishing one book in a month is actually an achievement for me (I usuallly take two, or three for big epic books), but I'm always reading something. I've been focused on John Gwynne's Banished Lands series for a year now. I only took a break in between Faithful and the Fallen and Of Blood and Bone for a novel by a different author. And as you can tell from my channel, of course I love audio! But I prefer to listen to something fully produced, with music and sound effects. There are only a few narrators that get me willing to listen to a "dry" audiobook, and at the top of that list is Jonathan Keeble. Whether I'm reading or listening, I want to give the story my full attention. Listening at double speed seems really disrespectful to me.

Funny, since got sent back out of the classroom yet again. I am having to rethink my reading habit and normalize the fact I am not going to get through a novel a week which has been pretty much my goal for what seems like forever. I found recently turning to short story collections as a good read along with another novel or break in-between. They may have a general theme sometimes but many author collections are filled with stories covering many genres. Also graphic novels. Modern comics are a very mixed bag but there is so many collected volumes of good material written and drawn by some incredible people. Yes, can be something more kid friendly in the older stuff but Stan Lee, Dennis O'neil, Roy Thomas, and others have some underlining stuff. There is a Pixar like quality that some might not know when it comes to comics.

I agree! I usually have two or three books on the go at once, or I'll have a break in the middle of a book to jump into something else. Like you say, the key is usually different genres. This way, a book doesn't feel like a chore to finish if I'm itching to read something else. I think that means I'm a mood reader. I think this has saved some excellent books from being dnf'd. One that came to mind was Black Leopard, Red Wolf which I struggled with for 200 pages or so. I took a break, read a couple of other, very different, books and then returned to it and was very glad I finished it - it was fantastic. If I hadn't paused, I think it would have been a dnf.

I am usually a one book at a time person, not because I don't think I can retain info from multiple books, but rather because I get so into the book I'm reading I am rarely in the mood for a change of pace or story. I'm like that with shows as well. I purposely wait to binge-watch a show and I don't want to watch anything else. Drives my partner crazy. However, sometimes I have to read more than one story. Right now I'm trying to read things on my Kindle that doesn't have an audiobook and I find I need/want an audiobook for when I'm doing chores or running errands. So I'm listening to The Green Mile on audio and reading my kindle book during a dedicated reading time. It's ok, except sometimes I really just want to continue one over the other...lol. Anyway, great video!

Thanks so much for this. Such a good point about the preemptive DNF. I’ve definitely done that due to wanting a change and now mixing up genres should help me come back to more books I’ve paused.

I usually have 3 or 4 books going at once. I keep some on kindle and some in physical form and I throw an audiobook in there sometimes. It helps to keep them straight. I used to read one book at a time and binge an entire series but now I break them up and read other things in between. I feel like I remember the series better if I break it up.

I am with you on that Mike. I am a mood reader, so there are days when, even though I am in the middle of a book or audiobook, I may decide to pick up a manga or a light novel. Right now, I am about 35% into reading while listening to Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, which is the third book in the spinoff Lord John Grey series, which are a part of the Outlander books but from Lord John's perspective. I love both of those series. I am also listening to the kindle book A Certain Magical Index the light novel. It tells the story of a boy named Touma Kamijou who has the ability called the imagine breaker. If he touches a spell or any kind of supernatural power with his right hand, he can cancel it out. This series mainly focuses on magic while the other spinoff series A Certain Scientific Railgun focuses mainly on science powers. I am also listening to the kindle book Full Metal Panic, which was made into an anime. Some days, I also like to read 2 books at once to allow two authors to compete for my attention.

A comment on Audiobooks. For me when i first got back Into reading I started Audiobooks only and i listened at a slower pace and retained more, as I listened more my listening speed increased up to 3x but I eventually brought my listening speed back down to about 1.3x and i believe it’s helped with retention and comprehension. Also i have no problems skipping back a bit to catch something again (think when something sudden happens in WoT and it becomes chaos, quickly). But over the last couple years I’ve added reading physically as well. I agree that i do have more retention while physically reading, but I also can listen when I’m doing something else that doesn’t require my full undivided attention (mostly driving 12+ Hours on the weekends i pick my kid up, and while working). So i have usually 2 audiobooks going, (1 is my main listen, the other is re-reading WoT with my kid while traveling) and 2-3 physical books that I’m reading all going at the same time, usually a bigger series, a smaller series and a standalone. Plus one of my favorite things about audio is the ease of re-reads for larger series or ones that you just want to revisit without backing up my physical tbr (ie the Cosmere, I’ve been though the whole thing twice now, and Stormlight 3 times)

I completely agree with everything stated in the video, i personally have the same issues as well. I am mainly an audiobook person cause i work so much, but im able to fit in around 8 hours a day and it helps. But i have books i read when i am at home, lately its been the Star Wars EU. But im also doing a reread of all the Stephen King books in publication order as well to switch things up. Honestly the most important thing like mike said its not a race at all, the main point is enrich your life and enjoy these books. I personally read and only have a hand full of tv series i even fool with, and even then i will go months without watching tv, then spend a weekend off binging to catch up. Just keep in mind there is PLENTY of great books out there now and many great ones to come and you have the rest of your live to read as many as you can.

Yes Mike, Sir you took most of the stuff i was thinking about why it’s good to read multiple books at the same time and this specially is the case when you’ve got a massive ambition to finish a gazillion fricken books; you’re bang on the Netflix analogy where you could be watching multiple shows at the same time, infact this is the analogy I used to get me to start reading multibooks whereas some people do binge finish a single series first “whatever rocks your boat” as far as speed is concerned then that’s a definite Yes for me specially when you’ve got a gazillion list to finish; Ofcourse that’s not to say you get so into it that you actually now stop enjoying what you’re reading as that blocks the purpose why you actually did it in the first place. Also since time and speed are of the essence it’s good to read multiple books at the same time as I believe that does increase your speed somewhat specially if it stops you from becoming a bored stooge stuck on 1 book but I’ve noticed this specially helps if you’re reading a brick of a book where sometimes you’ll get tired of a certain book and actually want to stick other interesting books in the middle like that one time I read LesMiserables “Not that good” but as long as what you’re reading is an extremely good read you shouldn’t have any issues as far as books that turn out not so good which you’ll realize by the time your halfway thru then it’s perfectly fine to drop em and start something new. Also switching from reading physical to electronic app on the phone will also make you a better reader and increase your overall reading speed as it’ll tell you which way you’re faster. Lastly a question please Mike and you actually told this is one of your vids but I forgot but where abouts do you live. Thanks!

I suffer from tinnitus have for 12 years and as a bookworm I found that in the last few years as my tinnitus has gotten worse what has worked for me is listening to audible as I read the along the book at the same time. The sound distracts my brain from the tinnitus and I can stay focused and concentrate for longer. I end up reading more and retaining so much more.

I am always reading a non-fiction book at the same time, I am reading a genre book. I am also always listening to an audiobook that is different than the other two. I never speed up my audio because, for me, the joy is in the reading. For instance, I couldn't get into the Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde until I heard Emily Gray read them. Then I was like....oh, these are brilliant.

I have been known to read three books at a time and when I’ve finished reading something like a hard SF novel I will follow it up with a romance. I tend to get bogged down in a series and have to take breaks from them for a while. Even a different author’s writing style in the same genre is a sufficient change.

These all work for me. In addition I have books that are only read in certain locations. One audiobook for the car. One on the nightstand. One that’s read over lunch at work. It helps reduce confusion for me. It might take me longer to read lengthy books at work, so I select novels 300-400 pages or less in that instance. That way I feel like I’m not stuck on a book and can keep pace with the others.

How I do it? I listen to one book, read one in English on Kindle, and one on Paper in my Native language. Changing the way to consume a story extends how much I can read/listen in a day, and I mentally switch back to the world of the book X rather easy that way.

I always have at least 7 items in my rotation. I have 1 fantasy series entry, 1 sci-fi series entry, 1 classic, 1 modern standalone, 1 book from a specific author I am interested in reading the full bibliography of, which I call my anchor author category (my current anchor author is Stephen King), 1 manga volume, and 1 comic or graphic novel volume in my core rotation. Sometimes, I will sprinkle in an additional standalone or biography as well. I follow a strict rotation in which I switch to the next book in the rotation after each chapter. That way, I know that something different is always going to happen, and I never get burnt out. A strict rotation also ensures that I finish pretty much every book I start and something new is constantly coming through the revolving door between my TBR and my Current lists.

I like to mix novellas and middle-grade novels in while I’m reading longer novels. They’re faster reads and don’t interfere with the big themes and story arcs of longer books. Slipping in a quick non-fiction audiobook is also a good way to mix things up a little.

I am more of a 1 book at one time person. I sometimes will read multiple or a little bit of something else if I am getting bored, or maybe the mood is not right for what I am reading. Sometimes I will do a different audiobook and physical/e-book but I usually prefer my reading to be the same between the 2, of which I prefer physical reading. Doing one fiction and one non-fiction also works well. I get the TV analogy, but for me books are more like video games. Sometimes I have multiple games going, but I have a hard time deciding what I want to play, so it is generally better for me to just focus on one game at a time. Perhaps if I tried scheduling it as you suggest, I could do better at.

Great advice! I'm one of those pesky audio readers. For a little while seeing folks in the community with their high numbers made me have a lot of FOMO and want to rush through stuff. Lately I've been able to slow down and enjoy the journey more and not stress when life is busy and I only get through a book or two a month. I try to use audio to chip away at a long book in 15-20 minute increments throughout the day whenever I have a gap in my schedule. I've only recently tried doing different books at the same time. As an audio reader I find it more convenient to have a couple books going in different apps, e.g. one in in Audible, one in Libby, making it easier to switch back and forth.

Hehe nice stuff man :) For me it just comes natural to read multiple books at once, because I like to read so much different stuff. One day I crave Sci Fi and the next I need some good old Conan the Barbarian. Problem is that I kinda fall into that trap you're mentioning here, that I sometimes feel that I really want to read something but I can't because I have so many going at the time. And that tends to result in that you don't read anything at all. So I just say "fuck it" and decides to read whatever I feel like for the moment :)

I suppose what you've said makes sense, but other than when I was reading Malazan (and Erikson's writing style irked me so much I decided I couldn't handle more than one chapter a day, not counting prologues and epilogues), I have never done this with concurrent books. I can understand reading say a Five Warrior Angels book then a Dresden Files book as a palette cleanser, but I've never considered concurrently reading two series. It's probably in large part scheduling for me. Right now I'm trying to finish Curse of the Mistwraith by the time Lonesome Crown comes out, then trying to finish Lonesome Crown by the time Ashes of Man comes out. These are all pretty big bois, so I'm fairly confident I wouldn't finish if I was doing concurrent reads.

It's so true that you shouldn't beat yourself up about reading too slow. Who cares? I used to read so much. Now I have this chronic sickness which prevents me from being able to focus all the time. Sometimes I can't see that well cause I'm too exhausted. I used to beat myself up about it and tried reading more but obviously failed. It took me a long time to just accept that I might need to take a break for a few days and not read anything. But we all read because it's fun. Why should we treat it like a race or almost like a job? Just read whatever and whenever you like (or listen to audiobooks). ♥️

I ALWAYS have multiple books going. usually about 5 but no less than 3 and I cant do more than 9 I realized that was my extreme limit... but my sweet spot is 3-5. if I only read 1 at a time I get bored I need to switch it up. especially during long reading sessions where I have a couple hour to read I will split it between multiple books so I dont get burnt out on one story. I also plan out a Tentative TBR for the entire year before it begins in my reading journal where I keep track of EVERYThING. its How I avg 135 books read a year. I never rush through books in fact I read slower than I wish... its just how I use my time VS rushing through. I spend more time reading than watching TV, social Media etc.
