The thing with how focusing on every single word is a bad strategy that ends up with you lagging behind in a conversation makes so much sense. I remember at times paradoxically having more trouble understanding texts spoken more slowly than those spoken fast because in the former case I had time to focus on every word which would scatter my attention and make me lose focus of what is actually being communicated.

Even in your native language you don’t notice every single word but your brain fills in the gaps automatically because you have so much experience in the language.

I think the thing I find tricky even when I have a pretty good level is understanding the tense of what someone’s saying. So I know they’re talking about going on holiday to the coast and spending time with their grandmother but I can’t always tell if they’re talking about the past or the future. It’s hard to pick up the nuance of verb endings when you’re starting out!

I'm half way through watching the detective series Inspector Montalbano (Il Commissario Montalbano) after finishing "The Owl App that shall not be named" - to begin with it was a struggle, they talked fast and I was struggling to match subtitles to speech (Sicilian accents make it harder!) Watching two episodes a week and a couple of months later it's getting noticeably better. After time you get familiar with the connecting words (if, when, however, without, etc) and common words [to this series!] (died, killed, alibi, revolver) and I find my brain "autopilots" over them and the effort shifts to the remaining words. JUST. DON'T. GIVE. UP. One day you'll rewatch something that was a level that was once difficult and you'll realise you're getting 80% of it with ease. 🙂

Yes! Very well done! I'm italian, from the centre, near Rome. Certain expressions will never be used by the rest of Italy, but one, that is a swear word, that is known everywhere in Italy 😂

The main problem with Montalbano is that the Sicilians use passato remoto instead of passato prossimo - if you are not familiar with Passato remoto (historical past) you have no chance

It’s a favourite of mine as you have a lot of context, the objects are described along with who they are ideal for, where/when they would be used. Plus prices and times, greetings between hosts etc are frequent.

I appreciate your humor, which makes this fun... I like to watch your videos in this way - 1) I watch the full 10/12 minutes and just listen then 2) watch and if i dont understand i read the translation then 3) watch it a third time and try to speak along with you, stopping the video to write down the words I dont know in my little italian learning journal. Sometimes if i feel totally CRAZY i will watch a 4th time. but indeed the repetition does help...it really does. and I like that you dont have stupid stories about Giovanni going to buy carrots...

A million years ago we started a Latin band. But neither my ex nor I spoke Spanish. We just loved the music. After learning a bunch of songs (enough to fill four sets) we began to learn. Most songs are about love, you know. Three years ago I fell in love with Italian pop music and everyday I flood my ears with Italian music from the 60s to current. Sergio Endrigo to Maneskin. I love the poetry, the sounds of the words.

Just one thing, Spanish is not the only latin language, technically Portuguese, french, Italian and Romanian bands are all latin bands

QVC Italia in Diretta (shopping channel) live stream is a personal favourite (if it's still hard, just set the playback speed a bit slower using the player controls.... but *always* slightly faster than is comfortable so your brain works at it!). Just put it on now and they are selling a blender... you can see what they are talking about which is better than random sentences in book. Language level is often very suitable: right now I'm getting frutta, verdura, zucchero, cucina, casa, cream, consistenza, possibilità, ricetta, mangiare, torta etc... new words are often identifiable as well.

Yes! They demonstrate what they are talking about, they repeat the thoughts multiple times, they are professional presenters so they speak clearly, and the selling messages are really quite simple. Great to have on in the background as you do work at the computer, wash dishes, etc.!

When I was learning French I always listened to audio at full speed even if it was audio for beginners. Even if I had to repeat it many times I wanted to be used to normal speed from the beginning. It worked very well for me so I’m doing the same thing with Italian. It means that when I listen to or watch material for beginners I have to speed up the audio, but I find that I can better understand native speakers with this approach. I don’t have to try to transition from artificially slow speech.

I’m the opposite. When I started understanding written Italian more and more, I took to listening Italian and even when KZbinrs were speaking slowly I could barely understand a word. I had to slow down the audio and read along with subtitles to understand and as time went by I was able to understand without subtitles and at “normal” KZbinr speaking speed but even now I have trouble understanding regular “fast” Italian speaking especially in movies/ shows. Also noticed that I can understand the KZbinrs I listen to but when I come across a different accent it’s harder and I have to get used to that voice for a while.

Kids use training wheels when they learn how to ride a bike but they take them off as soon as they can ride without them. It's the same way with slowing down a foreign language. Use it if you need it but try to get to full speed as soon as you can.

As a native Spanish speaker, I find very easy to understand spoken Italian (which I studied in a classroom setting for 3 years), even at a fast pace. Obviously, this has to do with the similarity between Spanish and Italian languages.

Da quasi 20 anni guardo Un Posto al Sole ogni giorno. Attraverso questi 25 minuti al giorno non solo ho allenato l'udito ma ho anche imparato vocabolario ed espressioni quotidiani, e vocabolario specifico di educazione, giustizia, cucina, facende domestiche, ecc. In questa soap c'e sempre qualcuno che va a scuola, qualcuno in ospedale, e qualcun'altro che è nei guai o rischia di finire in carcere. Abito in Argentina e la guardo online.

Regarding the last piece of advice, I can agree 100%. Even before starting to learn Italian, I was able to learn a ton of words, expressions, and even infer simple grammar rules by listening to Maneskin and Marco Mengoni and trying to figure out what they were saying and then comparing my guesses to the real translation. If you guys prefer music to a boring news report, I highly recommend this approach. It works really well for the listening part, especially if you're emotionally invested in the artist's work! Mind the accent though, as sometimes they might intentionally mispronounce some words, for the sake of preserving the song's rhythm!

This topic hits close to home. My reading and writing are pretty good. I have years of grammar lessons and quite a decent vocabulary (thanks for the word Inondare!). But listening is the hardest. In exactly the way that Katie described. But I go to my local bar and I chat with people. And when my brain is exhausted from speaking, I listen. It gets better over time. As with other difficult things in life, it's all about the practice! I've made some good friends doing this and even carved out a place for myself in the local community.

Salve! Io sono italiano, quindi non faccio testo 😂 Però studiando varie lingue, una cosa che mi aiuta molto è cercare di fare le trascrizioni di audio. Prima ascolto l'audio, poi cerco di trascriverlo senza guardare il testo, che guardo solo se non riesco proprio a raccapezzarmi. Richiede un po' di tempo, ma secondo me può aiutare. Inoltre mi sento di di dire che ciò che conta di più è essere costanti, che è a mio avviso la cosa più importante quando si studia una lingua (meglio studiare poco regolamente che molto sporadicamente). Detto questo, buona fortuna a tutti coloro che cercano e cercheranno di studiare l'italiano!! 🇮🇹

This was SUPER helpful!! I always fall into the trap when I'm listening and I understand a few words, my mind kind of stops and says, heyyyy, you knew those words and that phrase. It's only a split second but while I'm patting myself on the back, two sentences have already past by, haha. Or, I hear something I KNOW, but it's on the tip of my brain and I try to figure it out for a split second and again, two sentences go by!

I totally agree with immersing yourself in the language even if you don’t understand it all (or much). I’m American and lived in Germany for a few years. I kept the radio and TV on and subscribed to a local newspaper. Gradually I picked up the rhythm of the language and my understanding and speaking improved.

Something that has been super super helpful is to listen to episodes such as this and attempt to repeat what you hear at normal speed. For me it’s mimicking how kids walk around babbling bits and pieces of what they hear. It forces you to not fixate on a single word and also helps you realize what how your mouth needs to move. I find I also understand more because as I say things out loud I realize retroactively what the word was after I mis-say it. But the key is you have to talk out loud and not be ashamed to sound silly

Quello che mi aiuta piú di tutto è ascoltare diversi italieni, o di persona o su internet, parlando di un'argumento. Cosi è piú facile, o possibile, comparare quello che penso di aver sentito con parole che giá conosco e cosi capire. Perció il vostro canale è una grande aiuta per me. Anche ha senso provare di tradurere testi italiani. Generalmente si devono venire a condatto con la lingua il piú possibile. E ho anche una brava insegnante, devo ammertere.

Bellissimo video. Ma vorrei aggiungere che il problema non è tanto la velocità quanto la qualità della pronuncia. Posso capire perfettamente l'italiano molto veloce se la dizione è buona. Ma se qualcuno si mangia metà delle parole, diventa subito molto più difficile.

My knowledge of Italian relates mostly to the vocabulary of my specialty. Thus, conversation is something with I struggle. As to listening, i wait for the inevitable “in somma” or “pero” when all that i missed gets a more digestible recap.

I speak decent conversational Italian to the point where Italians might even think I’m Italian and then speak rapidly back at me. 😳However I do understand “Tucci Italian” spoken by Italian American actor Stanley Tucci quite well on his show about Italy 😁 I think it’s because he has a low voice and speaks very slowly and clearly like these people do

Sono d’accordo con voi riguardo a “inondazione”, però non di non ascoltare le notizie. Most people are already aware of news topics so it is easier to follow the conversation in the language one is trying to learn. At least it has worked for me it has worked for me. When we first arrived in Italy, I would go to bed with Rai 24ore on, and drive to work listening to news. I think it helped me develop an “ear” for the language.

This is really good, we live in Italy and we have been beating ourselves up about only picking up one word in five or one word and some meaning in the conversation. We thought this was really bad but..."thank you"...we now know that type of learning process is OK. I tried learning from books and it doesn't work for me, they only talk about Italian grammar not comprehension. Grazie mille !

Ciao amici, per me il metodo dello "shadowing" è stato molto utile. Guardo video di argomenti che mi interessano e ripeto tutto quello che viene detto. Funziona benissimo per me. Sto imparando l'italiano da poco tempo e ho ancora bisogno dell'aiuto di un traduttore online 😅✌ Un abbraccio dal Brasile!

I use the flood method. I just listen to the language and then pick up little by little..look up some words and then get into a real life situation. That is how children learn how to speak.😊 radio, tv etc…for starters. Even without comprehension.

Questi sono ottimi consigli. Per me personalmente, ciò che mi ha aiutato è guardare spettacoli per bambini, per esempio: Il Picolo Regno di Ben e Holly. Sfortunatamente la musica diventa ripetitiva molto rapidamente-se potessi spegnerla probabilmente la guarderei due volte tanto :). Ascolto anche un particolare audiolibro più e più volte mentre vado a dormire (AUDIOLIBRO - AIUTO, POIROT! - Romanzo di Agatha Christie), ogni volta cercando di capire un po' di più prima di diventare troppo stanco- la donna che legge il libro (Chiara Foianese) parla velocemente ma ha una voce molto chiara. La parte migliore è che non ci sono pubblicità che potrebbero improvvisamente svegliarmi mentre mi addormento...

Ho notato che non ascolti o guardi tanti video o podcast per un tempo lungho, mi sembra, dimentico come capire le parole in un modo velocemente perchè non pensare velocemente più. Quasi sempre non imparerei ogni giorno, perdo l'abitudine per "ascoltare" la lingua. C'è MOLTO importante essere costante - anchè se solo hai cinque minuti ogni giornata!

Secondo me, la cosa più importante è essere esposto alla lingua il più possibile, tutti i giorni… Per esempio io imparo 4 lingue (due o tre volte a settimana ogni di loro) e quando è il giorno dell’italiano, ascolto la musica italiana, guardando le serie, ascolto i podcast, la radio, leggo i libri ecc… cioè mi espongo alla lingua tutto il giorno, sicuramente per qualche ora… La cosa chiave è essere esposto e questo funziona per tutte le lingue che imparo…

In realtà (dialetti a parte) nella lingua italiana, così come per le altre lingue neo latine, le parole vengono scandite e pronunciate mooooolto meglio rispetto all'inglese parlato.

Quando imparo una lingua straniera, guardo in italiano film in inglese che conosco molto bene nella versione originale. In questo modo è più facile indovinare la frase.

One day i went to the cinema to watch an italian film. I was not interested in the film (topic something like starwars) but wanted to accompany my friend. Then after 30 minutes i gave up because i did not understand anything and so i was laying apathetic in the chair 😂. Then after about an hour i realised that i could suddenly understand the film also when the film story was about very weird stuff. That was mindblowing to me 😂

grazie katie e matteo per questo bel video..mia moglie americana da me l'italiano non lo vuole imparare, dice che non sono il suo insegnante e che la correggo sempre..io ho sempre trovato le lingue facili, sono nato bilinguo inglese italiano e parlo francese e spagnolo..cosa dovrei fare? come posso aiutarla e di conseguenza aiutare a noi? per quelli che sono interessati, provate lingopie, è un app che mostra film attuali in italiano e in altre lingue dove si può cambiare la velocità del dialogo e anche tradurre frasi o parole
