My Screenwriting professor in Film School used to say: “if you can’t see it or hear it, you can’t write it on a screenplay”, to stop us from using metaphors or comparisons which cannot be translated on film. Screenplays should be action, visuals, dialogue and sounds, not “feelings” or “extra information”. If you want to convey information, you have to put it in visuals and/or dialogue/sound.

At the risk of stating the obvious, film is a visual medium. As much as I love literature, writing for film is in itself an artform. It should be respected. A literature writer should possess a little more humility when making the transition from writing for books to writing for film. Expecting to "make it" merely on the basis of one's name or reputation is egotistical.

I don't think it's entirely J.K. Rowling's fault. I think it's also Kloves and Yates' fault. Even if Rowling struggles to get her ideas across on film, it was supposed to be their job to fix that. I think if you can point out all the differences then they should've noticed too.

The problem is, writing a book takes a long time. Adapting a book into screenplay takes a long time. It would’ve taken way longer for any movies to be created from the fantastic beasts franchise and movies make more money than films so Rowling probably just wanted to get straight to the massive income.

A thing I really hated in the film is the drastic change to Grindelwald's character. In TCoG we see him as a man who wants to conquer the wizarding world to reveal the wizards to the muggles so they don't have to live in the shadows anymore. But in TSoD he is just Voldemort 2.0, they took away all of his character and made him a generic villain. I always loved the scene where one of his followers kills a baby and he is just staring at the void in melancholy, sad for killing an innocent soul. But in here there is no trace of that respectful wizard. What a shame

In Crimes of Grindlewald, he was just lying to his followers and other wizards to get him on his side. Telling wizards and witches that they can live and mate with Muggles was all but a bunch of lies.

I don't think that the politics is the wizarding world's strongest aspect, especially when it comes to translating it onto the big screen. I’m actually beginning to think that J.K. Rowling’s writing isn’t the problem. Based on people’s experiences with the screenplay, they are well written. I think the blame lays entirely on the filmmakers who just aren’t adapting her descriptions on the page for the screen. Rowling’s descriptions may be more akin to novels, and as a film student myself I know that that’s usually considered a no-no, but in the case of Rowling, it helps get her ideas across. The production designers, art directors and everyone else in the art department are doing amazing at adapting Rowling’s descriptions, but I think David Yates is just not giving them as much focus as he should be. The editor as well literally has the script to reflect the ideas and emotions intended in each scene and yet they too seem to fail at adapting what Rowling has clearly written on the page. That being said, I’m surprised so many people were confused by parts of the Secrets of Dumbledore. I understood everything that was going on, especially the part with Grindelwald killing the Qilin because it wasn’t showing him to be a pure soul. So I’m not sure why others were so confused

i agree wit you on the screenplay part she put in lots of description so the art department and editor and director knows the plot and what should be reflected. But i also agree with the video, the whole mirror dimension and all that was not even explained in the movie that it became confusing i also found the killng curse not killing the animal immediately odd as that wasnt translated well in movie along with the Quilin not bowing to grindelwald but honestly the quilin hardly looked him in the eye which made it bit difficult to tell. all in all i really liked the movie but i agree parts of it like mirror dimension and the fact they fought yet no one noticed in real world confusing as no direction or dialogue was given for it. Hopefully next movie will be better having a little more knowledge on why grindelwald hates muggles would be good just to see why hes the way he is . For example with voldemort you know that he wants to live forever and finds dying a weakness and we know the whole background of his mother father and uncle and that he was raised in an orphanage conceived under a love potion so cant really feel emotions or percieve love, you sort of see why he became what he is, with grindelwald that is missing and that is a drawback knowing the intentions or why grindelwald is doing what they are doing is important

@@nm-cj9rb I can understand people’s confusion with the mirror dimension to an extent. I think it was intentional for the audience to be confused at first as this would place them in Credence’s position, hence also why Dumbledore says “things are not quite what they appear”, then shortly after we have the rotating transition from the mirror world back the real world - that to me is good visual storytelling, especially the fact that the real world is visible in the water’s reflection in the mirror world - but I can understand how people may have missed that and I suppose it doesn’t explain the “how” of it all. However, I think this is one of the difficulties of these films is that you can’t spend time explaining every bit of magic, otherwise you end up with so much dialogue that will eventually take up space for the progression of the story: after all, the progression of the story would take precedence over the explanation for the magic used. I think when Grindelwald kills the Qilin makes sense how it is now: the Qilin refuses to look into Grindelwald’s eyes because he is no way pure, but again, in saying that, I can see how it would have been clearer to have a moment longer where the Qilin does look into his eyes and turns away. I do agree with the killing curse and the adult Qilin at the beginning, though. I remember now that I was confused as to why it took two hits for it to only just die, though at the time I watched the film I thought it was because the creature was extremely pure, which turned out to be wrong on my end. So, that aspect definitely was lost in translation from page to screen and I understand everyone’s confusion. But yes, I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said about Grindelwald and his background. Hopefully the next films will be made and we get to see Grindelwald’s backstory (especially seeing as Secrets of Dumbledore wrapped up a little too neatly to the point I’m not sure where the story will go from there). However, I also think it’s important to note that Voldemorts backstory is kind of glossed over in the Harry Potter films, the only reason we know so much is because we had the books to fall back on, which is not the case with fantastic beasts :/

Exactly. Media tells these horseshits according to their dirty policies. What's to us that Rowling thinks that earth isn't round?! What's it to do with her art? Movies got lower and lower because Rowling is anti-anything...? Directors, producers, company... what about them? How an unknown lonely poor woman turned to a billionaire as she just wrote a novel? Now she can't write? How she could write the first fantastic Beast script and now she's cripple? She's so good, not extraordinary nor perfect but good to very good. And about movies... Not just this movie, HP's franchise sucks too; just 3 firsts are good and successful in many ways or at least acceptable. Blame is on directors, filmmakers and producers. No HP book could become less than two part movies! Perhaps 3 firsts are successful only because those had lesser extending important objects/subjects worth much for picturing and visualizing per story and due to a cinematic work; Plus, Chris Columbus & especially Alfonso Cuaron (don't know how's exact spelling) had done a very great job. But it seems company don't want to pay attention; They're just businessmen not artists! They even don't want to risk to give us an extended version or at least, more than two hours and one quarter movie! But making bats, spiders, heroic teenagers-liking marvel shitty works multiples every year, playing a weakened meaningless game, a copy of an imitation... day after day, it seems that's ok!

There are just so many plot holes and new magic that was never explained and doesn't line up with what we learned in the books. What I had a problem with was that the world and magic just didn't feel like Harry Potter. @@Sipu97 Yes, I did. The scene played out visually, exactly how it should when it comes to filmic storytelling. Dumbledore blew a drop of water through a window and it burst on Credence’s forehead, that doesn’t just happen for no reason. Then, the city sounds fade away and the environment slows down, implying there is magic at play. Dumbledore uses his deluminator to remove the light of the mirror world, which then accentuates the puddles of water where you can see clearly the real world continuing as normal. It was very clear to me that it was a mirror world constructed by Dumbledore through some powerful display of transfiguration: I imagine it’s similar magic that allowed Dumbledore to hide the philosophers stone in the mirror of erised. Also, regarding Jacob, it can be inferred that the charms protecting Hogwarts from muggles can be lifted for certain individuals. I personally loved the magic in SoD, it was far more creative and present then anything we’d ever seen in the Harry Potter series, but also, having read the screenplays, there’s actually not that much new magic; there are quite a few familiar spells that you wouldn’t know were used because they weren’t spoken in the film. Also, it’s only powerful wizards such as Dumbledore, Grindelwald and Credence who are using advanced forms of magic in these films because, well, they’re powerful wizards

Really seems like most of these are David Yates' fault, not Rowling's. It's not the screenwriters job to translate a script to the screen, it's the director's. I would agree that Rowling is WAY better at writing novels and is inexperienced when it comes to screenplays, but even that - trimming and polishing scripts - that's the director's responsibility. Scripts are never carved in stone during production. They are always subject to change, based on what the director thinks would make a better movie during production. And that this is something David Yates struggles with immensely has been very apparent even during his Potter films. I just fimd it so weird that we always blame Rowling for all these things just because she has the most famous name in the credits. I mean, you barely even mentioned Steve Kloves in this video who wrote the script just as much as she did.

I find it weird that Kloves didn't rewrite some of the more novel like qualities of the script. I mean the information about Grindelwald's past is interesting, but ultimately useless when it's not converted into dialogue or intercut with a flashback. It's not the director's responsibility to visualize such narration details on the set with an extremely tight schedule. Yates is not a writer's director, he has admitted such himself and trusts his screenwriters to do their job. And I find it obvious Kloves should have helped Rowling rework certain things that reads more like a novel than a screenplay.

@@orderudmysterier That is very much a director's job though. He is responsible for the entire project from a creative standpoint. First thing a director usually does is trimming the script - which is NEVER perfect at the beginning. (You can find first drafts of most Hollywood classics on the internet and it shows you that.) He can meet with the screenwriter for that or straight up order a new version with his direction. It's his job to make everything work. And as I said, that seems to be something he is consistently struggling with, which is probably why most of his movies seem so wooden.

He's saying than in multiple instances the scripts are good as books but not as screenplays because in a screenplay you have to give content and information through dialogue (things like the name of the characters). I always assumed certain magical creatures didn't die the way humans did when hit by the killing curse anyway. If it was so easy to kill a dragon, for instance, they'd make a poor Gringotts guard. We've also been told that magical creatures such as dragons and giants are tough against magic in general, so it wouldn't be surprising to learn that extended to the killing curse.

It seems to me that the people who enjoy reading the books more need them to understand the films. The 2 big fight scenes you talked about I understood during my first viewing. I couldn't necessarily describe the magic, how it was done or the items used to do it but I understood what was going on.

I'm one of the people who enjoys reading the book but to me reading is a lot like watching a movie so it maybe that my brain adds things that are not written out. Still I would love to read those screen plays rewritten as novels. But this video also increased my interest to read the scripts as they are.

One small thing, watching the movie the first or second time, I actually got that Grindy wanted to check whether the baby Qillin would bow in front of him or not and only decided to kill it because it didn't bow. I don't know the intensity/time difference that goes into writing a book vs a screenplay, but it makes much more sense to have an established book and then make a movie from it as was the case in the Harry Potter books. This method for the Fantastic Beast movies seems backwards/reversed and makes it like look like you're just making things up as you go along especially without the screenplay comments. Having said all that I still enjoy the Fantastic Beast movies because I really want to see them tie into the Harry Potter books/movies and hopefully when it's all said and done there will be a cohesiveness.

To be honest, the first Fantastic Beasts movie still holds up as a standalone for me. Even if the ending hinted at the whole Grindelwald storyline. But from the three Fantastic Beasts movies I always rewatch the first. The second and third is definitely incredible but the first always felt like FANTASTIC BEASTS to me. Quite a great explanation. You honestly helped me clear up some things like the place they dueled. I though they were somehow trapped in the blood pact. Not too different from the truth😏. And about a scene in their duel where it's as if they did priori incantatem, which caused quite a lot of confusion, I do have an explanation: 1.Either a move happened which is unknown to the wizards, one I call the yin yang movement, which happens between a thestral hair wand core and a unicorn hair wand core(which proves dumbledore's first wand hair unicorn hair inside it). It can sometimes challenge their owners to fight harder to somehow make themsleves see who's the better dueller(an idea I picked from one of your previous videos about a unicorn and a thestral). Or 2.because the elder wand can do unique movements like repair a broken wand, it can also do a move similar to priori incantatem that show who the superior wizard is and if that move is successful, the opponent's wand gets destroyed, if not, well the elder wand is pushed to the limit, but isn't destroyed, but starts to compare these 2 duellists. This was a big explanation, but still, it was worth doing it. I wish you all the best.

Rowling's writing style is not made for film, when translated, it just doesnt work. A films narrative has to have 3 acts, that all build into a crescendo that ties all 3 acts together. Her books use the Hero's Journey writing style and she uses a 7 act journey throughout the books. Which is why the books have such in depth, flawless and amazing storytelling. They all build up to the crescendo of the novel while taking you on the hero's journey, and we grow alongside them. Trying to translate this into a 3 act film, is just not possible. At best, you get a movie as good as Order of the Phoenix, when you have a competent screenplay writer and producers to translate the book into a film, then a director then has to bring that vision to life. But Rowling writing the screenplay herself, was exactly why we got clustered and almost suffocating scenes. Take the scene with the planning takes place on the train with our 7 heroes. Even though they explain the plan, it felt uninspired and almost nonsensical as to why they were brought together. Then the scene with Grindelwald and the Qilin, where he replaced the Qilin with a dead one that would do as he pleases. It gave you no narrative on what Grindelwald was up to in anyway and made no sense. Its almost like the movie was supposed to have a narrator that was supposed to explain the scenes, but it wasn't added to the final product. Rowling just does not know how to keep what works, take out what doesnt and highlight the plot and focus on the story thread. Shes just not a screenplay writer. It would be much better if she wrote a referential short story with the major plot points, then hand it to the studios writers and producers which they can turn them into a compelling script and screenplay.

Really strong video. You helped me understand more of the film. I agree with nearly every comment. One thing that strikes me is the difference of time stopping in the final battle and not stopping in the mirror dimension. Due to the lack of understanding of either phenomenon as new magic to the audience, I also was convinced it was the same type of event. I think it really doesnt support the film to have had 2 similarly visible showdowns that operate very differently. Not to mention that the mirror dimension seems pretty powerful and was never an element previously. Having used both reduced the impact either one would have had whether we understood the magic immediately or not.

I’m not a Potter fan and having rewatched all the Wizarding World films over Christmas, having not seen the Potter films since their initial release, the first Fantastic Beasts film was easily my favourite of the Wizarding World franchise. It was a stand alone adventure film that opened up the wizarding world, it introduced four potentially interesting characters and it was a fun well paced film. Crimes and Grindelwald and Secrets of Dumbledore drew these films back to Potter lore and just screwed it up IMO.

I have always loved "Fantastic Beasts" films, and I have always found them very rich and that they allow us to discover more about the wizarding world. But I realized that it was mainly thanks to all the books that explained behind the scenes, like the scenario books, the Dermot Power art books and the Minalima books. That's why I like these films so much, it's because the books bring more richness, which allows you to appreciate the film more afterwards. They enhance the viewing experience. I loved Secrets of Dumbledore - best of the three in my opinion - and can't wait to read this one. I think Rowling should have written Fantastic Beasts novels first and then made them into movies, like Harry Potter. The result would have been better I think.

No doubt! I think the deleted scenes should be included in the book/script too, because they give a better idea of Albus's plan. Despite he says there's no plan at all, I think his plan is to countersight Grindelwald, not only to (personally) defeat Grindy, but to save Credence (not letting Grindy see it). And the blood pact - both Albus and Grindy looked suprised when it started to break - more should be written about that.

the only scene i was confused with was the credence vs dumbledore fight cus i thought that the water drop was supposed to do something and i had completely forgotten dumbledore had the delluminator. i thought that time had stopped, like when he fought gellert, and they were transported underground or something. it’s nice that the screenplay clarified that. i really feel like jk should push to write the next one into a book if she can before we get the movie. i *really* like to know what im dealing with in a movie/show before i sit down and watch it, i hate being confused

I’ve said since the first film that Rowling should have made them a book series instead of screenplays. It’s obviously clear that she is more experienced in novel writing than screenwriting. Just reading a few passages in this video you can tell that she’s writing it like a novel rather than a screenplay. I honestly don’t know why they thought it was a good idea to make them into screenplays instead of books. If I’m honest I just pretend that the screenplays are books. It’s less annoying to me that way. Perhaps the biggest disappointment for me in this film was the portrayal of Grindelwald. I just found it to be pretty luck laster and as if it was missing something. His plan confused me until about the third act as the film didn’t do a great job of explaining it. I also felt the reveal of credence being the lost son of Aberforth wasn’t as impactful and as shocking as it should have been. It just kind of gets mentioned and no seriousness to it. Tbh Ik you mentioned comedy in this film but I personally didn’t really see any. The film had no light hearted moments at all. The only thing I can say that I really enjoyed about this film was Jude law’s performance as Dumbldore. I love him as dumbldore he gets the calming wise side of dumbldore correct. You may disagree which is fine to each their own. I hope that if they do make a fourth film that they let Rowling write a proper book instead of a screenplay. Xx

Just gonna say something: the Knights of Ren not being named in the Star Wars Sequels wasn't a bad idea. The problem was not allowing them to be used as a bogeyman for the Resistance/New Jedi. Had they done that, everyone would have enjoyed their presence

Definitely agree with what you said about some confusing moments in the film, like I think that the Dumbledore vs Credence fight is one of the worst and most confusing scenes in the FB series. That being said I still liked Secrets of Dumbledore because I felt some other parts of it improved on the writing of Crimes of Grindelwald. I feel like Dumbledore, Newt, Jacob, and Lally all got great character-defining introductions that we definitely didn’t get in the last one which really helped establish our investment in these characters (instead of just randomly reintroducing them in random settings talking about exposition). And they stick with a group dynamic in this one, or at the very least pair characters up, instead of having everyone out on their own solo mission with gives us more fun character interactions and doesn’t force us to have to imply everything the characters are thinking because they have no one to talk to. On top of that, while the plot is still convoluted in a few places I honestly found the storytelling fun of the characters having to follow Dumbledore’s seemingly nonsensical plan-maybe not the best writing but very entertaining nonetheless. SoD is by no means perfect (probably still in my bottom 3 Wizarding world movies), but it’s definitely an improvement on CoG and hopefully they get the chance to improve even more if they make FB4.

Another thing you mentioned in your video about the film is when Albus and Aberforth blocked Grindelwald’s killing curse, which is only possible by a wand with the same core. Did the screenplay explain that as well? I did have a theory about it, that Albus and Grindelwald have wands with the same core, similar to Harry and Voldemort.

I Would love if you could make a vid on blood oaths. In this movie it seemed its so easely broken. Yet in the HP books when Harry ask Ron how to break it. Ron says you cant because then you die. But in this movie its like a few scenes and the problem of the blood oath seems to be fixed

The Unbreakable Vow is not a Blood Pact. The Blood Pact makes it impossible to break it, forcing a person to stay within the Pact's terms, while the Unbreakable Vow simply kills the person if they ever think of breaking it.

That scene where Newt tries to rescue his brother from Erkstag Prison, those creatures that are the prisoners were apparently Manticores, which doesn’t make sense because that contradicts what JK Rowling described a Manticore to look like in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I think it would make much more sense if she said that those creatures at the prison were Blast-Ended Skrewts from The Goblet of Fire book. It would honestly make much more sense, since those creatures had claws, stingers, and were able to blast that fiery substance! That’s what a Blast-Ended Skrewt does! She could have made a great reference to the original series but for some reason she went with the “Manticore” even though the evidence was right under her nose. What do you guys think about it, am I getting a fact wrong or should they have said that they were Blast-Ended Skrewts?

We all like to complain about Rowling's screenwriting but you mentioned something a couple of times here that needs to be acknowledged: David Yates is not a good director. In the original series he used the books as a clutch, leaving all sorts of information out under the excuse anyone could pick the books and understand what was going on. He is doing the same here, omitting details even if they're in the screenplay. He doesn't care because it worked before and expects it to work again. (E.g. the two-way-mirror. If he made the choice of removing it from Order of the Phoenix, then you have to figure out a way to introduce it in Deathly Hallows, not just put it there. And it wasn't that hard, really. Harry could've found the mirror at Grimmauld place, see Aberforth's eye and then take it thinking it was Dumbledore's reflection. All he needed to do was have a dialogue where Harry confronts Mundungus about stealing Sirius' property, then Mundungus could admit he had stolen and sold one a mirror. Then come back to it in Part 2 with Aberforth saying he bought it- It's a change, but better than nothing).

I thought it felt kinda weird when Queenie read Creedence's mind and basically narrated his emotions. It was like they had this passage about Creedence's internal conflict but had Queenie narrate it instead of showing it. It felt off. In a film you should take advantage of how much you can show not tell. It makes the film more engaging. So much of what was explained in the film was with dialogue which isn't inherently bad but it made watching the film feel bland at times. For example, I really think they should have shown flashbacks to when Ariana was killed in the duel between Aberforth, Albus, and Grindelwald that summer while Albus was telling Newt what had happened.

I agree about the first example. It's just not very good writing. As for adding a flashback to the duel that killed Ariana, I respectfully disagree. Everyone assumes "show, don't tell" always means action over dialogue, but the scene does a good job of showing Albus' sadness and regrets about the event through HIS recollection of the events, rather than opting for an objectively shot flashback. The scene is all about Albus' recollection of the event many, many years later and thus I find it more compelling to show his facial reactions as he tells News about it from his point of view. The death of Ariana should be ambiguous because Albus doesn't know for sure what happened.

I know JkR didn't want to continue the novels but it would be much the best way to join up and put the new histories of the new and old characters in a format accessable to the extensive readership in one place for generations to come , including cursed child witch is hard going as a screan play.
