I spent about 25 summers on Neebish Island. My parent had been going there since the late 40's, then bought a house on Little Neebish (Raines) Island in the early 70's from friends who lived next door. We stayed at the original Neebish Island resort until we bought the house. Commuted every summer from Chicago to Neebish. It's really paradise up there, but I think younger people who have to be constantly attached to their electronics wouldn't know what to do. Finally made it back after almost 30 years in 2019, unfortunately for my brother-in-laws funeral. I'm pushing for a week long trip there in 2023, but it's a long way form Texas to Neebish. I grew up in northern Michigan in a little town named Vanderbilt . I now live in a very large city and miss the simpler things. Thanks for sharing your adventures I really miss that area.

In the Summer of 1976 I was on a house boat trip on the Mississippi River. We would travel from Lansing, IA to LaCrosse, WI over a week period. We would pull the boat up on to a sand bar and camp for the night. While swimming we would have to keep a look out for barges. The water would get sucked out from the shore and one time my then step brother got sucked out words the shipping channel. Being a strong swimmer at the time I swam out get him and bring him back to shore. The freighter wash phenomenon also happens on the big muddy too, and it took me back to my teens and the boat trips as a 14 year old.

That was a cool adventure! And kudos to Cliff! I’m sure he made some cherished memories for a lot of kids who still think about there summers out in the beautiful Michigan wilderness! We need men like him today! Great guy and thanks to the both of you for another cool trip!

Took the scenic route home from the Soo one time and found this ferry out in the middle of nowhere. The operator was doing some landscaping and he stopped what he was doing to chat with a couple tourists. Told him next time we came up we would we would make the time and go across. You run into the best folks in that area.

This was really surprising to see! I went to Pine River Canoe camp for a couple Summers and worked there a couple more. I always wondered what had happened to the camp and Cliff. I went on a canoe trip in Canada (Missinaibi River) for a couple weeks with one of the Turnbull daughters. I was still in high school, young, stupid and ready to escape the confines of East Lansing. I have many fond memories of those days and made a lot of friends. What a flood of memories!

Awesome timing, thanks so much for posting this! The wife and I were looking forward to taking a short tour through the UP this weekend, and Neebish was on the radar for sure. Really sad that the cemetery was essentially forgotten by the church. Makes one feel more than a little pessimistic about going through that particular trouble for oneself. Personally, I'd rather be sprinkled gently over Lake Superior. Me and the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald can hang out, play cards and trade stories from our respective time periods. :D

If you liked neebish , if you have the chance ST.Joseph island in Canada is a really nice huge freshwater island , mostly commuters to the soo and farmers , some cottages. The hill to the east of sailor's encampment on 548 has a spectacular view of shipping traffic down the channel from an elevated position next to Gilbertson Mansion. In the middle of the day the island roadways are pretty deserted aside from the post man doing deliveries.

Very glad to see the cemetery is being taken care of. My 3rd great grandma, Henrietta Cahow, and one of her sons, Leslie, were both buried somewhere on the island in April and September 1925 (their death certificate only lists the burial location as Oak Ridge, MI). My best guess is that they were buried on their farm, but I really have no idea. I think the catholic cemetery is a little too far to be considered Oak Ridge, but whether or whether not they are in there I am glad its being taken care of.

Aww, you waited for a freighter wave and only got a salty, their waves are tiny compared to a loaded lake freighter. You got a great tour of the south end but now you have to come back and learn more about the north end. We have the old lighthouse keepers house on the north end of the island just west of the corp dock. (If you went by I'm sure you saw it.) It was built in 1868 and is full of exciting stories and history which I could talk about all day if you let me.

We had a salty and 2 freighters go by. There wasn't really much difference in waves. I think because the salty was travelling much faster. There was a party or something at the old lighthouse, so we really didn't feel right about "stopping by". But, we would have loved too.

Why would the water recede when the ship went by? I don’t understand the mechanics. I would have thought a big ship would displace water not the other way around. Love your channel thanks!

The same reason water recedes before a tidal wave. It is the trough of the wave that arrives to shore first. It's called a "Drawback". A wave needs volume to "swell" and draws it in from the shore.
