The saltwater paludarium is developing rapidly. Algae is forming on the rocks, snails are reproducing and the plants are growing. We’ve made some small changes to the system to improve flow and heat distribution and now it’s time to add some more life to the ecosystem. Let’s see what has changed since the previous episode.

I know nothing about aquariums, but as a gardener and diver, I am in awe. So beautiful. I particularly love the invertebrates: tubeworms, snails, nudibranchs, sea cucumbers, starfish, etc. Also, the anemones in the tidal area bring back childhood memories.

I absolutely love this tank, I believe this is the freshest design concept for a marine tank that I have seen in a long time, and the execution of that design was spot on, Bravo!

To push the salt creep back down, I'd just do all the RO water topping up of the tank as a "rain" from spray bottles and fine watering cans on the emergent reef rocks. I'm guessing your evaporation losses are like around a gallon or so per day, so that rain could be one of your daily chores. Those kinds of plants love very soft rain-like water and the organics that wash down into the tank will just be some slight food, but mostly the fibrous cellulose parts will just become substrates for water purifying bacteria and micro filtering organisms. Like a little "mulm" sediment that might accumulate in some low flow corners. If these small areas get somewhat deeper with mulm sediment, you could vac them out, but even if organic sediment gets a bit anaerobic, that's not terrible, as that's where denitrifying happens, lowering your nitrates. A real Mangrove with its peaty organics does a great job of denitrifying. Denitrifying occurs where anaerobic water can contact organic matter is a super slow water movement/diffusion manner. I made some small containers of heavy clay and bog soil in the bottom - they were non draining ceramic or glass pots that looked cool and freeform natural- topped with sand to keep the mud down. Maybe bigger stones to keep your tank dudes from mixing them up. You can buy mangrove mud for refugiums, but I never did that shipping mud 1000's of miles when we have plenty in our yard . Most of the proper organisms will develop on their own.

If you have an ATO you might as well put the hose end on top of the mount with plants. That way it will water the plants every time evaporated water is replenished and simultaneously flush away all the saltcreep from the rocks.

It’s such a beautiful setup! I wonder if you’re going to have any living creatures on the terrestrial part like a salamander or something. The entire room could be your own little paradise! Some bioluminescent photo plankton could also cool when the lights are off and the water jet creates turbulence the excites the bioluminescent water! I absolutely can’t wait to see fish fry find little coves to live and thrive in after being born! You’re living my dream! @@colinderksen1878 they would likely snap or fall over (as in the flow spike itself not the main plant). Moth orchids typically grow horizontally or upside down on surfaces and not "right way up" naturally. It's why they're prone to crown rot when kept at home. As because most people grow them "right way up" water collects in the centre of the plant causing rot, while naturally water never sits in the centre due to the plant being upside down or sideways.

You can keep them out of the substrate as well, then they can grow into the substrate on their own eventually. A few “mangrove experts” recommended me to attach all of them to acrylic rods elevated above the sand bed, to prevent root damage and so they can grow into the substrate on their own. I’ve seen farms that grow them in racks, where they have very long roots sitting in the flow, Abyzz from Germany had something similar. Thanks for the concern, should be fine 😎
