I was going to put that in my "cards you've never read before tribal" Muldrotha deck, but then I realized that I couldn't use it to counter red and white spells, so I didn't. It just feels like something you'd only play if you were the only blue deck at the table, but that'd never happen.
@connorhamilton57073 жыл бұрын
@@bodaciouschad You can still use it to counter Red and White spells, you just need ways to make that mana. Chromatic Lantern and similar effects let you tap lands for any color, along with being a colorless mana rock that taps for any color. You can run lands that tap for any color of mana like Mana Confluence, Transguild Promenade, or Exotic Orchard. Treasures are also becoming more common and Can make any color of mana. I understand that these don't really fit the theme of "card you never read before", but I am just giving the basic and obvious examples of ways to do get the mana you may need.

So far I've found (medium to high confidence) 1) The Touchstone above Urza's head. (Urza's notes) 2) The JuJu Bubble between the top of Urza's staff and the light call-out. 3) A Powerstone, likely the one expelled by Glacian, containing his spark, that later separated into Mightsone and Weakstone just below Urza's arm. 4) The symbol for Powerstone, likely taken from Worn Powerstone, in the little gold circle that's extending form Urza's armpit. 5) The book symbol on the line extending from Urza's arm, likely a reference to Thran Tome 6) Stylized wings, which may be from Weatherlight, but are likely from Urza's original Ornithopter design, slightly to his left beneath the powerstone. Not noticed by me: 1) The Amulet of Kroog, fading next to Urza's feet. 2) The weatherlight in the bottom-right corner. Things that I'm unsure about: 1) The Sailboat-style triangles above Urza. They resemble LIngering Mirage, which might reference the return to Tolaria after the sundering. I feel iike there's another card that fits better, but I can't think of it. 2) Urza's mark, which he uses to brand Karn, doesn't seem to be in a prominent place, but may be between the waxing quarter and the waxing crescent. 3) The waxing moon decal may be in reference to the Null Moon, which Urza supercharged with white mana. 4) There's a lot more here that I expect are there but maybe cannot see: -- references to the bloodlines project, Karn, Xantcha, and even direct references to Mishra / Phyrexia.

Maybe have the Future Sight frame with an 8 on the left hand corner. Could have even used Liliana of the Veil or Jace the Mind Sculptor with an "old" frame. What would an "old" frame look like for a Planeswalker? That's what's so cool about the idea.

I look forward to these segments Gavin, thanks for sharing this knowledge and insight. Seeing the detail and effort that goes into each card by a team of caring professionals is fascinating. While I may not understand some card decisions on the surface, each segment shows how thoughtfully curated the cards and lore actually are. Getting this glimpse helps to appreciate how complex this must be. A question if I may: On power creep - does the existence of high powered, non-banned cards in historic formats inform a gradual rise to meet and level out the playing field, or is creep more of a case of slowly increasing headroom for design possibilities? I was just thinking of how a card like Balduvian Hordes used to be top tier, haha.

What type of land is a saga?
@MayContainLanguage3 жыл бұрын
I'm very honestly interested in this. There is some kind of possible argument for it being a "narrative landscape", a storyscape environment within which lesser events can take place. You could even play around with the idea that the story of Urza has somehow magically made its mark in time, in a stronger or at least different way than other sagas (which must presumably in some sense have done something similar if we take them as in-universe spells). Elsewhere in the comment section ideas such as a museum installation or a book somehow connected to the actual lands of Dominaria. We're getting into fairly weird and perhaps unconvincing-seeming areas, but one thought I have is maybe you can ascribe the weirdness to Urza's skill as an artificer and experimental mage. Wouldn't he, if anyone, be able to infuse a book, or even an abstract story, with "landness" if it suited his purposes? (The player can, after all, absolutely make an artifact or an enchantment into a land with the right cards.) Still, none of this is of course explicitly played up in the card's flavoring. I can see some of it perhaps as a very subtle background theme and/or internal justification, but mostly it seems like the problem of "why would this be a land?" has simply been set aside to make a mechanically interesting card with a punny subtype line. That stands out as slightly annoying to me, but other parts of me like it on the basis of 1) it just becomes part of the weirdness, and weirdness is fun, 2) the reasoning is not necessarily bad, the card is flavorful in many other ways and maybe this particular "miss" was just a justified sacrifice, and finally 3) it gives us something to speculate about and sets up the stage for some neat ideas if you start diving into it. Still, I would love to see some kind of official comment on it.

"Perfect" Inb4 new players play it incorrectly because sagas and lands act differently and tapping makes it confusing when they're put together. In all seriousness, it looks like a great card. But even I had to look at it for an hour and listen to some explainers before I fully understood how it worked, and I've been playing MTG for over two decades.
@merelythepawn3 жыл бұрын
Hold your equines there, Pal. "The mana cost is litterly not zero, it's null". So aside from being obtuse, want to explain that? No Mana vs No Mana needed? What The Functional are you talking about? Mana Value, "introduced" in Strixhaven is completely and reduntely irrelevant. So, your saying, "mana cost and mana value are """"DIFFERENT"""'. "Mana Value equals Converted Mana Cost". vs "Mana Cost equals Cost of Printed on Card". So, correct me if I'm wrong (as I abnormally am), you are saying, look at Lotus Bloom, it reads "zero". Now look at some other card, it reads (I don't know, not zero?). "it's different". How? Oh, right Ice Age's Ice Cave. Okay, let's read it.... read. Wait what?! What are you trying to say again? I'm trying to look at the whole package; there is a speedo in my way. Explain again please. I'm slow.
@GoodMorningMagic3 жыл бұрын
No problem! So mana value is the total mana cost of the card, converted into generic mana. I card which costs 2G has a mana value of 3. Mana cost is literally the printed cost on the card. A card that costs 2G has a mana cost of 2G. So Urza's Saga can find Sol Ring, Wayfarer's Bauble, and Ornithopter. It cannot find Arcum's Astrolabe, Executioner's Capsule, or Lotus Bloom. Does that make sense? :)
