Red aquarium plants are a coveted aspect of the planted aquarium community. There are many types of plants which are innately red, if given the proper conditions. Some are easier than others and we will discuss not only the most important factors in establishing a deep red coloration but also what the best options are for the beginner planted tank enthusiast. Don't forget that not all aquarium plants ave the ability to become red as it is a genetic trait of a particular subset. However, many aquarium plants that at first seem to be exclusively green will transition to fully red or partially red if the correct conditions are met. At the end of the day, high tech aquariums with added CO2, strong lighting and fertilizers will always result in healthier and potentially redder plants. Continue reading: aquaproshq.com...

I am always so blown away to look at your tanks. I watch quite a few tank builders on KZbin, but none of them put out the quality, ingenuity and skill every single time like you. Lots of guys can and do make a couple good tanks, but literally every tank you make is just breathtaking. Great job and thanks for keeping the community in awe of how gorgeous tanks can be!

1) ton of iron, 2) lots of light I had some red root floaters, they'd turn dark red if I added iron every other day or so, if I went down to adding twice or once a week it would turn pink. What you said about c02 is likely the case as well, but since the floaters touched air it got lots of c02 from the air. My tank is low tech.

Hi I found your channel 1 hour ago thanks to Google AI and immediately subscribed it. There seem a bunch of aqua related interesting stuffs in your channel though I've watched only a few of them so far. Another benefit I immediately felt - As a non-native English speaker or learner, it's really rare to meet such a person like you who speak crystal clear English with proper speed. To me, you are better than any other English tutors. I feel like I got two birds with one stone haha. Thanks a lot.

Adding on to mike's 2 factors, we can limit the nitrate levels in the water by doing more frequent water change, it really helps with all the different red plants. Most red plants also prefer slightly colder environment ( 25~ 26 Degree C).

Totally, it gets complicated with certain plants for sure. Rotala red for example is easy, just have CO2 and its red. The needle leaf needs CO2 AND more light. Im sure theres plants out there that need CO2 stong light, Fe AND a specific N level. Soooo much biodiversity :)

Everything depends on species. Recently online there's been this big campaign of people saying iron has nothing to do with it. But I swim in lakes looking at plants and have seen vals go completely red from substrate alone, seeing reds even 6 feet down. It looks like iron because there's a lot of red stones on the beach. A mile away in a different substrate they are green, sometimes with a pink stripe, based on what I know of the geology, I think might be from magnesium. Iron rich can affect other plants also, I've had hornwort turn red on the nodes. Also I have guppy grass that gets some purple red streaking, moderate light, but when the tank wa more iron rich was seeing a lot more of it.

My red plants ARE red but the get black and leaves crumble and die. Have tried so much different things and I can't understand what is the issue. ALL other plants thrive and grow and there are absolutely no algae anywhere. Even the red plants seem to grow but all leaves turn black , some holes in them then crumble up and die. I'm about throwing them all away soon because I can't figure it out.....

You've got to have blue on there also, not only for growth but to make them pop. Just red and white isn't aesthetically pleasing to most eyes either.

How about light duration? Perhaps in lower CO2 conditions, moderate lighting for much longer periods might help plants in iron rich substrates gain more growth and maybe add more reds due to a longer photoperiods? Since in CO2 setups with high intense lights photoperiods are restricted to 6hrs most of the time due to potential algae issues, the set up with no CO2 would put on less growth since it can't photosynthesize at the same rate.
