21:34 "It's not about how long you're sitting there for, but whether you achieve anything" Excellent advice. The only thing I would add is that when you first start a piece, besides looking out for any funny notes, it's also a good idea to look it over once or twice and think about how you'll work out the distribution of the bow.

Ms. Sparrow, I play neither the piano nor the violin, but am learning the guitar with sight reading and music theory incorporated into the curriculum. And I find your tutorials very helpful and translatable to other musical instruments. So just in case you were not already made aware that your fan base extends beyond violin and piano players, I thought I would send you a note acknowledging my appreciation of your gift to the KZbin music community. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Please keep up the great work.

Shame an anyone who criticizes you for your teaching,length of video or anything else. They should just keep scrolling. Your way of encouraging and teaching is awesome. Thanks again. !!

I can see this is not a recent video, but I hope you still read the comments, Alison. Thank you so much for all your excellent advice! You have inspired me to get a decent violin, to make a proper learning schedule and really practice on a regular basis. I have taught myself the guitar and the piano to mediocre level and really enjoyed these instruments tremendously (still do) but, admittedly, nothing compares to the joy I get out of the violin so far. I normally struggle to tolerate noise and, as a beginner, I'm sure I'm producing some fairly terrible noises on the violin at times (I bought a violin mute ;-)). But I don't mind at all, it's just pure joy. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge, experience and passion in such a beautiful way (I hope you hear that a lot!). ❤

Alison, thank you SO much for keeping all your videos free!! I just read your blog post on how you make your videos---you truly take a lot of effort just to help us along, and get nothing in return! I really appreciate that; if you didn't do this for us, I probably would not have been able to learn the violin for free, at least not as easily as I did using your beginning videos a few years ago. I'm definitely not a pro, but you got me on the right track to begin with, and for FREE! That's so nice. :) And this was a helpful video---on several of the points I was mentally gulping and looking guilty. ;) Especially the trying to play a piece to perfection and the correct tempo the first time around. :/ ---Emma

Thank you Alison, you are awsome again as always!! You were talking about me, as a student, I am playing since 6-7 months, totally self-taught, I have your songbooks, and I want to play a song that is first of all above my level and it is challenging for me, but I lose my patience when I cannot play on the right speed after 2-3 times playthrough. I was thinking of learning a new song it is a matter of 1-2 hours of practice and I should know it already. But I realized it is much more and much more practice, now you gave me a guideline how to practice and I will follow your advice. Thank you a lot.

I wish you were in my area here in Kenya!! This was absolutely brilliant. As a beginner adult student (28 years old), I find that many teachers do not offer what is suitable for adults. By this I mean, for kids you can do all manner of games to help them remember, but for some reason, not so for adults in my experience. I've been looking for a practice schedule for months and months! Thanks Allyson!!Well done!!

Hi! I'm in my 40s and thinking about taking violin lessons for the first time. Glad I found you and your videos - very helpful! I was just wondering if you thought that using fretless finger guides was beneficial or hurtful, in the end. I took piano lessons many years ago, and my teacher never let me use any special guides (including a metronome). She thought it would make me a less learned piano player. But I didn't know if it would be the same for these fretless guides or not. Thanks for all your hard work, making these videos!

I've been practicing piano longer than I have violin. I am terrible at practicing efficiently. I can only play the C major scale. My warm up consists of playing through the 3 songs I've already memorized how to play. I haven't finished playing through my entire piece yet, either. I made huge progress today though. Playing slower has helped me to build my sight reading. I've noticed that sight reading as a vocalist is one thing, trying to sight read while playing piano, violin, or ocarina is totally different!

thank you for such educational, clear videos. I've played piano on and off over the years so, although i can read music, i don't ready very quickly. i'm 52 & was suddenly charmed by a violin piece. Over the summer I don't have access to my piano so due to it's portability, I'd like to learn the violin. Is there anyway you could identify a violin piece for me? No one I know recognizes it. It's in an ipod episode, the last 2 minutes of the podcast. the podcast is The 7th Avenue Project. The podcast episode is "Psychologist Steven Pinker on the Decline of Violence' Oct.30 2011. At the very end a beautiful VIOLIN piece is played. Do you know this piece. I'd am hopefully that perhaps I could learn this piece maybe by year 3 of faithful practice? thanks so much.

Thank you Alison for the video. I will try to implement these ideas (especially the playing through mistakes.) As a non-music person taking my first steps into this world, the most confusing concept in music, to me, is tempo. How do you know what tempo different pieces of music are to be played at? I really wish there was some standard (ie in 4/4 a quarter note = 100 beats per minute or some such thing like that.) Would you be able to address this in a future video? Thank you! I appreciate these videos and I can't wait to be able to play some real music soon (I already printed off the Star Wars theme!!!!)
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
+Drew Its a bit of a rabbit hole to explain and leaves folks more confused, but the speed is the speed you want to play at. Most pieces of music say what speed to play it. I might make a video on this topic - I keep saying to myself I will....!

1st I want to say thank you. As in THANK YOU! I just bought my violin last july 29 this year and your videos are helping me a lot! 2nd I realized that I have been practicing for 8 hrs a day. When im practicing im not noticing the time but of course there are some breaks which I watch your videos during those breaks. I started july 31 and I finished your open and first string practice as of today. I let my friend(violin player) listen to me while playing and he is impressed so thank you so so much. Question though. There are some part I can play fast perfectly but when I tried to play the same thing slowly I messed up. Is there something wrong or any advice? Have a blessed year!
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 7 жыл бұрын
You need to be able to play everything perfectly, at a slower tempo. if you cant play it perfectly at a slower tempo, you wont be able to play it fast. Dont focus on getting things fast - its a very common beginner mistakes and one that will send you on the road to bad habits - very bad habits and poor playing.

Still, i try to look to the future and keep working. When i watch your vids i have faith im going to succeed.

+Mel Stirling Its a difficult one as I would really need to show and demonstrate, but get the rhythm in your head, then try to play it SLOWLY, then add a SLOW (S L O W) metronome. I think the key here is SLOW. As i said, you need stupid slow. Slow Slow and more Slow.

Hi Alison! Love all your videos. Quick question, when practising a piece, say...in 120 bpm should I play the piece as fast as I can sight read which is maybe somewhere around 40 or 50 bpm before speeding up?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
You need to set the metronome to the fastest pace of the slowest part - if that makes sense. If that means you have to play the whole piece at a painstaking 50bpm, then so be it. Once you can do the 'tricky part' PERFECTLY with the met at 50, then increase 5 or 10 and keep going up. If you get to say 85bpm and its going wrong, in that parts are not PERFECTLY in time with the met, then you have either slow down or work on that section.

I've switched strings 3 times (first pirastro tonica on my A string and a pirastro gold wondertone on my E, then D'Addario Helicore and now I'm using Pirastro Violino.) I've look at many tutorials on bowing and my position but after fixing those problems, nothing has changed. I'm also using a Yamaha V3 Violin. Do you have any idea what might be causing this? Thanks!

Its your bowing, not the violin. I cant see or hear you so I cant correct what you are doing wrongly, but it will be your bowing.

Hi Alison, I have a question. When you practice, can you work on a few pieces or only focus on one piece?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
A few. Keeps things interesting plus you learn more. I would advise NOT focussing on just one piece, for that reason.

Ah thank goodness for that. I'll usually have one which is a sheet and then I'll learn a couple more by ear. I thought I was doing something wrong by playing so many at a time, but if I didn't it just wasn't the same :)

I noticed you don't use your pinky when doing the scales. Is that unique for the violin?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 6 жыл бұрын
Totally depends on the scale. I use the 4th all the time, but I’m teaching this to beginners and the likes, so I do what suits them and is best for them rather than confuse those people with the complicated versions I do as a professional player and teacher.

I can recommend my '1-30 Violin Course' and my books that accompany it. Those you mention will not teach you without the aid of a physical teacher, as that is how they have been written. My course guarantees to take you from a complete beginner to an accomplished intermediate level and the first 10 lessons are totally free so you can trial it! ‘1-30 Violin Course’ free videos: bit.ly/2jjeCfX ‘1-30 Violin Course books: bit.ly/2V3MPle

Every student is different. I know myself, I'm extremely bad in all things multitasking. That's why I avoid notes, although I'm used to notes. I have to concentrate on technical issues and on improving my expression on the violin. I think I successfully taught myself jazz trumpet since 2004--people tell my I'm a pro (which I'm not!). But you're right, practicing too long is bad. If my hands are stiff and hurt, I can only unlearn what I had already gained, cuz I play a bunch of crap in that condition. My method is, improvising on sonata movements from Handel, Bach, Telemann, Manchini, Corelli until something tells me, "Stop, you need a break!" I will practice hours today, but it will be in intervals. Sometimes I can play 10 minutes without interruption, on other days I have to interrupt in the middle of a sonata and wash dishes etc. Well, I use this and my improvisation routine helps me: www.muziekweb.nl/Link/ELX0787/Edition-Peters-H%C3%A4ndel-3-Hallenser-Sonaten-f%C3%BCr-Fl%C3%B6te-Basso-continuo Yes, I don't practice too fast--that means, avoiding Allegro until it works. From time to time I push myself by trying it, but then at once go back to Lento or Adagio etc.

By the way, I was trying to find a teacher as kind of live tutor. There was a violinist who is a member of Academy for Ancient Music Berlin--I could cycle to her apartment in 15 mins. But it's difficult, I'm like a supertanker, moving forward since May 2015. I can correct the direction bit by bit, but it's impossible to stop, turn and change the direction. Theoretically it's possible, but it would mess up my long-term plan and destroy everything I've worked on. But can I say to the teacher, "Listen, you gotta follow my curriculum--here it is....." I don't think, classically trained teachers will be happy with it and I can't imagine they will be ready, able and willing. The teacher at the phone was like, "Okay, but I cannot improvise...." But then she didn't answer my next email. My guitar player said, I should call her again. But I'm definitely against it. I feel, she doesn't feel comfortable with what I had proposed, which would be improving expression and phrasing of my improvisations in Handel style.* Well, I will be on a violin professor's workshop in 2 weeks. It's about jazz violin, so let's see, whether he will tolerate my approach to violin improvisation. He might accuse me of being an anachronist, but after all he is too, playing swing, bebop and funk which all aren't new styles. _____________________ * I had this 15 years ago, trying to buy a new alto recorder, not knowing the seller was a virtuoso and teacher. After riding over a Corelli movement he said, "I know that, but it's different in my memory...please play the same again." So he started the same track and I certainly played something completely different, for I have a very short memory. He couldn't understand, those notes where coming out of nothing and go into nothing. It was very funny to see him puzzled.

+Kirsty4ever Hmm, without seeing whats going on, its hard to help. All i can suggest is that you go back to the start and begin again, but take your time. Sometimes its good to start again as you can gain perspective and having a second go means you understand more the second time. Hold the violin out at 10 O'clock, then when you put the bow on the string, stand in front of a mirror and make sure that its perpendicular to the violin. Start bowing up and down to the very ends of the bow making sure it stays straight until your bow arm learns where it needs to go to stay straight. You can then start working on isolating the strings too. Its hard and takes time. if the violin were easy, everyone on the planet would be playing it!
