The secrets to riding in the rain

I avoided riding in the rain for 5 years... so I made myself do it as much as possible and told myself after that, I could decide if it was still worth avoiding. Now, not only do I love summer rain riding, I consider myself pretty well prepared for it. Here are all the things I now use to stay dry and visible while rain riding.

My lessons on 40 years of riding: 1: Put rain suit on BEFORE it rains. If you get caught in rain without a suit, stop at a gas station and buy a news paper to put on your chest & under your jacket. It will help keep your core warmer. NEVER ride beyond your means. It’s better to be in a hotel & wishing you were on the road then on the road wishing you were in a hotel.

Yes Summer in the UK, after a dry spell,it’s like someone has put fairy liquid on the road. Plus the Diesel that the HGVs spill, it adds up to dangerous. Oh yes,the HGV drivers will say it’s not them. Yes it is I have followed a number of them with it spilling out.

I ride year round.rain, hail, or shine. Sydney doesn't get particularly cold or snow. I use a 2 piece as one piece are awkward. I never kept my waist length hair dry. Goretex does get wet. Biggest tip, trust your tyres.

Getting wet may not be nice but the utmost important thing is being able to see. Meaning, your visor not to fog up. In all my riding years, the only thing I find working is a Pinlock. On the outside of the visor I use a little bit of liquid car wax. Like Turtle wax. You loose the water much faster. When you ride at speed, it's enough to turn your head to each side a bit for the water to be gone. Well, keep on riding. You clearly love it.

Great info. I used to ride a KZ550 in everything. I once had to stop and buy garbage bags to use as raincoats on a two hundred and fifty mile rain ride up to Pennsylvania from Virginia. In the fall too so it was about fifty degrees regular temp and almost freezing at sixty miles per hour...yum yum. I am surprised to see so few motorcycle tires with no rain grooves in them now. I had Continentals hat had a twin open rain rib right jn the middle right around the tire. Yes, this was decades ago. Anyway, keep up the great work. All your information is appreciated.

Great idea addressing a subject that many hardly ever consider before having it happen by chance. The budget gear isn't worth the powder to blow it up as I've found four decades ago. Its gotten far better than before. Yeah it cost, but so does medical treatment if you get caught out, and get a cold. Its miserable getting drenched, but beyond tolerance if it must be endured for very long. Its a serious chill if its also cold, and makes it dangerous since your muscle tense up and make you less limber and far less likely to deal with emergency maneuvers or stops. Yes the first several minutes are the most hazardous, but road and rain temperature variance changes how long that time remains. Thank you Doodle. Your miles ahead of a great number of Vloggers that only speak of their interests, not the enjoyment and safety of the Sport.

I do not ride in the wet by choice. I do not mind riding in the rain heading home (as there is a nice warm shower and dry clothes there). I am also a fan of good wet weather gear. I have breathable (goretex) wet weather gear. Living in Australia, it can be raining one minute and 40 deg Celcius the next. Recently I bought a Segura Nomad Jacket. Very warm and very water proof. Not goretex. But it has been brilliant in winter and rain. Definitely will not be using it in summer. But the other three seasons. It is my first choice of riding jacket.

I'm an enthusiastic 3. Fantastic video idea and very well presented. I ride year round in the PNW, often in the rain. I have a limited selection of gear to choose from due to my height (6'4"). First Gear Kathmandu Jacket, Tourmaster Venture Air 2.0 pants and Forma Adventure boots all work well, keeping me comfortable and dry without breaking the bank.

One of my first wrecks on a bike was due to riding in the rain shortly after I got my license. Was out trying to get home before a storm opened up at night, maybe a mile or so from home and the sky opened up in a torrential downpour. I was coming up to a stop light and because all the oil and gunk from cars had washed down into lane one from lane two my tires lost grip and I went down in a very low speed low side. No damage to me or the bike. Lane position is very important when in rain. After that I didn't have any issues with getting out or caught in the rain. Take it slow and smooth and you'll be alright.

Learning to ride in the rain is one of the best skills you can have, its all about been smooth on the brake and throttle. Here in the UK, you can't always avoid it. It can be sunny and clear where you are but 5 miles away is heavy rain. Had that happened to me once.

One thing I can share about being able to see in rainy conditions... This works especially well at speed (probably 40ish mph or 70ish kph)... Just turn your head a little to one side, 5 second or so, then to the other. Better than any wiper... As long as you keep eyes front, it should not create problems..

Living in coastal South Carolina, a light rain is a blessing this time of the year. The torrential downpour, you might as well pull over as you aren't going to be able to see. I love riding in the rain. It's different, and it makes me slow down, take time, and focus a little more on the ride. It's part of riding. How can you be a rider if you aren't willing to ride in the weather? Love the video, and I'm sorry I'm a little late with my comment.

I added bark buster/hippo hands type coverings to my bike for a recent trip that was going through cold weather and they had the added benefit of helping keep my hands/arms dry despite 3 hours in pretty torrential rain from the last “atmospheric river” that went through California.

An unconsolidated opinion, one small thing, but a possible life saver: almost perfect vision during rain, using anything making your helmet visor move the rain droplets away smoothly. I myself tried Turtlewax thin film on the visor, or even better: turtlewax sealant. Sealant is a water like. Just smear and let it dry a bit, then use a piece of cloth to wipe it. Need to apply every X hours thought. Sealant lasts longer. Keep a small bottle in backpack....

I'm a 3 and on the Busa it's a constant refresher on throttle control and easy on the braking. The secret to keeping your bun dry is get a train suit with a Incorporated hood that goes under your helmet and allows rain to go off the back of your helmet off and away. Once you have it all down pat your on your way to being a hardcore biker. 😁

Recently discovered and subscribed 👍🏻 Riding bikes in the rain makes you a far better rider, and to me should be made a compulsory part of training. Most modern vehicles have driver/rider aids such as traction control, ABS etc. but these things shouldn’t be relied upon, and a good understanding of skid control and cadence braking should be taught. I’m in the UK, so rain is 24/7, 365.😉

I live in western Washington where if you don't want to ride in the rain you move to Arizona. I have a Harley rain suit and while it's not as cool looking as black leather jacket and chaps it does a much better job of keeping you dry. It has a thin hood that I put over my head and under my helmet and I stay very dry. I have 2 pairs of water proof boots and both work as advertised. I driven in solid down pours in Texas and the Sircuze mountains (I know I spelled that wrong) in northern California. All the way through Oregon from Grants Pass to Portland, rain all the way. It stopped just after getting into Washington State. It's just part of the ride and you are doing a great job of dealing with it. Hang in there, girl, there are a lot of miles left to ride. :)

Ok, after the first 5 - 30 minutes of rain, the roads can be like ice, especially in the middle. That's the darker stripe you see when it's dry. That's oil vapor from cars and trucks just sitting on the road. Ride extremely cautious for the first 30 min. until the rain lifts this off the road and floats it to the side. After that, ride slow but normal. If you ride defensively you could get in trouble like a newb driving on snow for the first time. Light on throttle, slow on brakes. Great video Doodle! Peace and... Doodle, our British friends tend to exaggerate the amount of rain they get. If you google the totals you will find that Georgia and Alabama sometimes get more annual rainfall than anywhere in GB. Their acceptance of rain riding is left over from the time when no one had automobiles. Everyone walked, rode bikes or motorbikes, so if you went to work you rode your bike or cycle, it was not a choice.

The total amount of rain a place gets it not a good indicator of how often it rains. The same amount of rain can fall in a day if it's torrential, or over the course of a week if it's not. I am from the UK and live in Ireland and we might not get as much torrential rain here but we get often weeks where it rains continuously, sometimes months with very few dry days. And no our intolerance of rain has nothing to do with the past, it comes from the fact it is also often cold here. Getting wet in a warm climate is very different from getting wet when it's cold. I don't go anywhere without rain gear on and I've often had to stop to warm my hands because they are going numb. So please don't try and compare our climate to the southern US, it is very different.

For summer showers look at something like the Klim over glove called the forecast , looks weird but works great. Also schampa makes a wind and waterproof helmet skirt but I think it’s primarily for cooler weather.

Hi Doodle, a great video and I appreciate the amount of work needed to produce this level of coverage on this rarely spoken of topic. High traffic roads can become dangerous after a dry spell followed by a shower, to produce a thin oil slick, especially near bus stops. You cant afford to be too fashion conscious, as looking zombie like, offers the best protection. Should you have a fall, you need full body protection!

Having good rain gear on a multi day ride is a must, but sometimes you ride out in the sun and ride home in the rain. I carry a couple light items in my bike bag for just such occasions. A light rain coat that I can put on over my riding jacket. A pair of playtex living gloves. I pull these gloves on over the cuffs of my jacket to keep the rain from running up the sleeves and put my riding gloves on over them. My gloves get wet but my hands stay dry. I have vinyl boot covers (from Uline) for working in wet conditions. I pull them over my boots and under the legs of my jeans (or rain gear) to keep my boots from getting soaked. I use a 1 gallon ziplock bag to keep everything together in the bottom of my bike bag for wet occasions and refill as needed.

Here in Oregon I ride in the rain 8 months of the year. My hair is always an issue and sometimes it works its way up into my helmet. As far as boots go, I found wearing snowshoe gaiters keeps all the water out of my boots. That was one of my best ideas actually. :D

I always rip it at stoplights when I get caught on the 🌧! I never have rain gear when it happens 🤷. I just suck it up for the first 5 minutes, after that, you're already wet so you might as well be happy.

I have an aerostich R3 and one of the things that's kind of important in that suit is that it has a lot of vents. Some of those vents are meant to still be able to work in the rain. The biggest one goes all the way across the back which can be unzipped, but it has a flap over the opening. This allows air to pass through the suit without getting water inside it. Though to your point about Gore-tex, the whole suit is Gore-Tex so there is that. Because I always have the R3 on, I am always wearing rain gear. The problem with any rain gear though (even Gore-Tex) is that it is going to be vapor impermeable when its raining. This means that if you don't have vents in it, you are going to be wet anyway from sweating into everything. This next bit has to do with the fact that some fibers keep you warm even when wet. This is leftover from my backpacking days. It is next to impossible to keep your hands dry. They will either get wet as you are riding or when you come to a stop and all the water drains down your sleeve into the gloves. What you can do is to keep your hands (and gloves) from caring that they are wet. If you have glove liners made out of a material (like wool) that will keep your hands warm when wet, then it kind of doesn't matter unless you are riding so long that you get water logged. The liners also make it easy to get leather gauntlets on and off when wet, just make sure the mix of fibers is relatively slippery. This same trick works for boots as well. Anyone who has ever been backpacking knows that somewhere on the trail you are to walk through a knee deep, 40 degree creek and so no matter how high or waterproof your boots are, you are going to fill them will ice cold water. For this, and for general cushion and comfort (these things are amazing), I alway wear Buffalo Wool socks. These are not always available and they are expensive, but I am fairly certain you could survive an ice age in them. I wear the the Trekker version, but they have other weights. All will work for just keeping your feet warm when wet. If you ride all year like I do, then they are even more useful in winter.

I tried a little application of Rain-X on my visor when it last rained in Callow-fornia and it worked surprisingly well. Unfortunately, incidents of rain are sufficiently spaced out ,that the roads are perennially slick. Great caution is advisable here when rain riding.

Agreed on the bike service for parts. My Tiger needed a new shift sensor and it took a month and a half because of the UK shutdowns and constant air mail being delayed.

As Indonesian, i've been riding in any rainy weather there. Funny stories i can share, many times, the rain didn't fall in the whole area. So when the rain starts, you were like... Should i stop and wear the rain coat? Naahh... Probably just little rain and then you went through it. And after few km, sun came out but you're the only 1 wet rider 😅 Or the opposite, you decided to wear rain coat and later on become that one stranger riding a bike with rain coat in a bright sunny day 😅

Goretex gear is too warm to use in the tropics and most riders don't even wear protective jackets.

More for cold weather riding...I get my gear at Army surplus ( much cheaper and more durable ) . I found a great two piece ventilated rain suit at Army surplus....boot selection also excellent and sometimes cheaper...SHOP AROUND.

Doodle I have a water prof collar from a company called Schampa Shielded. I donj't know if it is still available but it does work to keep water from running down your neck. It is a crescent shaped piece of nylon with a strip of Velcro along the top edge that attaches to stick on Velcro around the base of your helmet. If a person could not find it I am sure it would be easy to make one with a little experimentation.

It’s just in for routine maintenance - but I didn’t take it to a Triumph shop so they were missing a Triumph specific tool to close it back up - it been a little over 2 weeks since that tool was ordered and it hasn’t even shipped yet 😰

I guess I'm type 3 - hard core. I've got about 300k miles under my belt. I ride all kinds of bikes, except sport bikes. I've never liked the crouch, even when I was in my 20s. I've been riding since 1981 and I've done more than a couple rides where I was out in torrential rain all day. These are the tips I have from learning it the hard way: 1) cheap rain gear isn't likely to work so well. Or it will tear or melt easily. But that doesn't mean you have to get the most expensive. 2) properly adjusting the legs and cuffs is critical. 3) make sure the legs are fully over your boots and as far down the boot as possible. If it has a strap, tighten that down so it doesn't slide up much. 4) put the arm cuffs OVER your gloves. I've found putting gauntlets over the gloves allows water to come down the sleeve and into the inside of the glove. Of course, you can get the opposite with sleeve over glove, but that seems to work better for me. Again, slide the sleeve down as far as you can and strap it tight around the glove. 5) ensure any zipper/snap overflaps are covering the seam and sealed if possible (many have velcro to "seal" them). 6) if the collar has any kind of extension to help it go into your helmet, use it. 7) a waterproof neck gaiter should probably go on the outside, but I never do that. It's just not practical. I don't really have a problem with water getting in from my neck, fortunately. That said, all my bikes have a more upright riding position. ie: not the sport bike tuck, so YMMV. 8) I like to crack my visor just a hair if fogging becomes an issue. But there are times where it's difficult to keep it clear. Carry several dry microfiber cloths if possible. Of course, waterproof boots and gloves are essential! Don't be scared to ride in the rain. You have more traction than you think, but some surfaces can be slick. Watch for them and avoid them if you can. If not, make sure you approach them fully upright and once over them (say a large metal plate) do not lean, brake or change your throttle. Keep everything steady. If you have to alter anything, do it smoothly. No sudden movement or downshift. This applies to any low traction situation. People will think you are insane to ride in heavy rain, but I do it here in California. Not that it rains that much, but I ride all year. The only time I don't ride is when its raining in a manner that will make visibility very difficult (eg: misting) or ponding is likely. I'm not a big fan of unexpected 6" puddles and hydroplaning at 65mph. But that WILL wake your ass right up! Sometimes you get caught off guard by unexpected rain. If you practice in the rain when you can, you'll be ready. Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos and tips, Doodle.

Doodle, you are great. However if you would like to comment on rain riding, see FortNine, Ryan F9. Vancouver, BC conditions. I can attest, Seattle and Tacoma, WA conditions are similar. If you ride in the months of September through June, you ride with rain as your constant companion. I am certain Megan Kaptein has ridden in conditions similar to this.

Ppl tend not to drive in the rain because the rain itself is already slippery and on roundabouts there tends to be more oil on the roads that in combination with water makes it almost as slippery as ice 😱 as a kid i had a few aquaplanning sliders so i also know the feeling of being scared to ride in the rain but its all about keep doing it eventually you will master the craft of riding in the rain 👍 I dont own a car so i ride with rain and snow and as raingear wise, i had so many over the years but 100+ euro suits most of the time keep me dry 😎 PS: for your hair, you could use a showercap under your helm 😉 PPS: The "extra piece of fabric" shouldnt be loose 😂 it has a soft band just to make it more comfy for your neck, there are suits that have a extra collar piece tho

Girl, I mentioned Gore-Tex to you on your comments section so long ago. And about how Sir-Mix-Alot who lives in the rainy Pacific North-West is so serious about the stuff he wrote a song about it. And you were all "uh, what? lol." Slinging Lead knows about the things of which he speaks! No hard feelings though. In all seriousness, I can go swimming in my Gore-Tex gear and not get wet. Their claims of it being "breathable" are marginally true at best. Great video.

When I was riding back in the early 60s ( yes I’m still riding) I had a Belstaff Trial Master suit.It was waxed.And my work was a long way from home. I never had any Issues with water ingress ever. But the newer version I couldn’t even afford it. But it doesn’t have rave reviews.Progress I suppose.

I used to think i had a perfect rain-proof system until I did a ~18hour ride & it rained the whole way. Eventually, water leached up my hair, soaked my helmet liner. Then it leaked down my neck until every part of me was soaked :) Even my boots filled up with water. My boot covers & pants were great though.. I went through a lot of fairly deep water & my feet stayed dry for like 10ish hours.. but eventually everything was wet.

Man, I straight up gave up on trying to tie my hair up. I just leave it open now and it's so much more comfy. When it rains I just wear frogg toggs and their high collar deflects all the water away from my hair anyway.

You can use the spray for waterproofing tents on any fabric to make it shed water. I use it on my daily gear for surprise storms and it works fine. You can also get waterproofing “polish” for your boots. The bonus is that it makes it easier to clean your boots if you bother. Also, I highly recommend using a hydrophobic coating on your visor. Regular wax or Rainx will do, but a true hydrophobic product will shed water off your visor at slow speeds as well as it does at high speeds. The better the wind protection on a bike the less rain hits you. Touring tires are way better performance tires on wet roads. ADV tires are better than touring. Ironically, knobbies can be really squirrelly. Never outride your skills or conditions. If you aren’t comfortable riding in the wet, wait until at least the rain stops. There is nothing wrong will going slower. Making it there in the same shape you left only a little wetter is way more important than keeping up with the plastic box drivers.

A little bit late to this. There are finger squeegees you can get. You put your gloved finger through the gap and can use that to keep the helmet visor clear.
