After 6 years Judith went solo and had a fine career. But if you listen to her you’ll realize that the rest of the seekers harmonizing really accentuated her amazing voice. I doubt that the other seekers would have accomplish what they did without her and I believe their harmonizing brought her back for the revival tour that lasted a couple decades longer than the original group.

I was one encouraging you to react to this. It was the first single I ever owned - I was 6! I've never found it funereal, but it does sound slower here than I remembered it. It's the acceptance of an ending though, so I understand your reaction. Overall I just find it calming an beautiful. The tune is an old Russian folk melody, as was Mary Hopkin's 'Those wer the days' which you reacted to a few weeks ago. My Russian father had no interest in pop music, but recognised and liked these two songs!!

The original Russian song is about famous bandit of 17th century Stepan Razin. He had kidnapped Persian princess and throwed her away to the river from his pirate boat to keep peace and discipline inside his band.

Well done Harri l was waiting for you to do this song since you first started reacting to the "Seekers". They managed to knock off The Beatles and other top British bands from No.1 spot on the charts when they arrived in England with this song and "I'll never find another you" not bad for an Aussie folk and gospel group who only planned to go to England for a few months.l think this song is adapted from an old Russian folk song, anyway keep them coming Harri, cheers🇦🇺

This song has been requested at funerals. I remember hearing that it is a translation of an old Russian folk song. The Russians have a lot of strong songs about grief and bad times due to their remembrance of generations of suffering. It also has that heavy slow beat of treading or marching through snow and cold winds. I think a lot of that daily rhythm would seep into national music.

There’s a Dutch version which is associated with the Dutch river De Rotte 😅 I was wondering whether it was some kind of traditional which The Seekers made their own or that the Dutch one was kind of a parody. I now think the Dutch version is likely older than the The Seekers version.
