dude, no... if Sega used the SGI chip the Saturn wouldn't have been done for years after it was released. Nintendo found out how unfinished that chip really was. Duke Nuken was 3D levels with 2D sprites (just like it was on PC), but id software had nothing to do with that game. Quake did not have 2D sprites, it was 3D levels, 3D monsters, and 3D objects, and the credit for this goes to Lobotomy Software, NOT id. The programming complexity of the Saturn has nothing to do with quads v. tris, it was due to how many processors were in the console. Agreed the launch was a total failure, probably the biggest mistake of Tom Kalinske's career. Where did you get the information you shared about Sonic Xtreme? Yuji Naka didn't want to participate in Sonic Xtreme, I've read interviews where he said he wanted to do something else. Yuji Naka also didn't want Nights Engine to be used to Sonic Xtreme, he threatened to quit Sega if Nights Engine were to be used because he didn't want it overshadowing Nights into Dreams. The 3 versions of Sonic Xtreme were the original fisheye game, a version partially completed by an American developer called Point of View (you can download this and play it on your Saturn), and a second version done at STI (SoA) based off the boss engine in the original game (you can also download and play this verion) - this isn't the Nights Engine. There are interviews with Chris Senn, the project leader, all over that explain all of this. Also it's Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI). Silicon Knights is a Canadian video game developer.

Great video! I recently bought a Saturn for the first time. I missed out on it when it was originally released. What surprised me the most about Sega at the time was how they didn't build upon the success of the franchises that made the Genesis such a hit. I like the show. I think an important issue that was overlooked is that it wasn't just the Saturn that failed as a console. Everything you said is spot on. But remember, this was one of 5 systems being worked on at the same time. Sega Genesis, 32X, CD, Saturn, and the Game Gear. Too many systems saturated their own market and not enough resources were pulled to any one project that was needed. Sega tried to do too much at once. I personally love the Saturn - games like Nights, and Earthworm Jim 2.

Part of the reason I didn't adopt the Saturn early on is that it came out too soon after Sega released the 32X. Seeing how the Japanese library dwarfs the US one in both quality and quantity, and how Sega of Japan properly advertised the console, versus how Sega of America did things like state publicly how Saturn wasn't their future, early launch, no RPGs (at least in the beginning) ignoring the 2d strengths of the console....I'd say Sega of Japan isn't the one at fault.
@zacharystevens61936 жыл бұрын
@@RazorEdgeBullie Sega of Japan is the one in charge as Sega as a whole. The problem that really hurt Sega was hardware not software. Look at alot of the consoles Sega of Japan created that were utter failures. The Sega Nomad, Sega CD, Sega 32x, Sega Saturn. That's not even factoring in Sega of Japan's terrible hardware choices with the Sega Saturn making it insanely hard to develop for up their with the PS3. The Saturn was really never meant to do 3d graphics. It was made with 2d graphics in mind but, got rushed by Sega of Japan and ended up with terrible 3d rendering and a very hard console to develop for.

I'm surprised there wasn't even a passing mention of Bernie Stolar. Now, Stolar get a bad rap, and he deserves flak for bringing some of his bad ideas from when he was working at Sony to Sega, as well as publicly announcing that "Saturn is not our future". (Not even Nintendo did that during their rocky Wii U days!) However, if it weren't for Stolar pushing Sega in Japan for a Saturn successor, we wouldn't have had the Dreamcast. So much wrong in the video. Silicon Graphics approached Sega not Silicon Knights. Virtua Fighter is 3D(flat shaded) but on a 2D plane. That doesn’t mean it’s not 3D, it’s just that it has a fixed camera. Quake for Saturn is 100% genius of Lobotomy software not ID. quads vs triangular polygons actually was not a problem. The problem was the fact that saturn relied on multiple cpu's whereas the PS1 relied on a single (somewhat faster) CPU. when used correctly, the saturn was a very powerful system, unfortunately this was at a time where most mainstream game developers were not used to developping games for multi-cpu systems. Fundamentally they were very different (ps1 vs saturn) , so games just did not port well. your version of the story is not 100% accurate, but i watch everything that has saturn in it, so you get a free view & comment.

Despite having a few stand out games that were actually better than their Playstation counterparts, the Sega Saturn was simply too difficult to program efficiently. Not only that, but Sega kept the majority of the most competent programmers in Japan only. This severely hurt the system. What went wrong? Japan. Most of the issues with the Saturn were known by Sega of America but the Japan branch were arrogant and refused to listen. The surprise launch of the Saturn even came from Japan. 3D gaming was something they realized they needed to have too late in the game so it was kind of tacked on. Sega of America was the branch pushing to use the SGI chip as well but Japan said no we have our own engineers. Sad really. I loved Sega and these failures are the reason they are no longer in the hardware market. If the Saturn had done a bit better they wouldn't have been as cash strapped when the dreamcast came out and perhaps could have put up a better fight. It doesn't take much to ruin a good thing. Sony almost did it with the PS3 launch and quickly learned their lesson. Gamers are not loyal to platforms.

Neoptolemus I don’t know anything about emulators, but I can tell you about my favorite games for it. Right of the bat the Panzer Dragoon series, especially PD Saga. Shining The Holy Ark, Shining Force 3, Dragon Force, all Capcom fighting games series. My favorites were the SF Alpha series and Darkstalkers. I don’t know if you’re an SNK fan but Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown and the King Of Fighters series. There’s also Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Decathlete and Winter Heat. Astal, Enemy Zero, Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, Last Bronx and many more. I’m sure you can find reviews for all of these games on KZbin if you wanna check them out.

The Saturn is a tough system to emulate due to its complicated architecture that had way too many different chips. There are emulators like SSF, Yabause, and Mednafen. Mednafen is probably the best Saturn emulator, but it’s complicated to use due to it being command line driven. None of the Saturn emulators really run all that great TBH and you need a very fast powerful computer to run them at an acceptable frame rate.

Street Fighter Zero III Sonic Jam Guardian Heroes Radiant Silvergun Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter Yabuase I heard is the most perfected emulator - key word “perfected “ Your best bet however is to just get a real console and then either buy a premade pseudo Saturn cart or flash your own pseudo Saturn cartridge and make the games burnt . Try to get a cart flashed on an action replay 4m-1m so you can play the fighters

@@sweet_sukeban4022 Yeah, no. Nice try, though: Worldwide Saturn sales include at least the following amounts in each territory: 5.75 million in Japan, 1.8 million in the United States, 1 million in Europe, and 530,000 elsewhere.[137] With lifetime sales of 9.26 million units,[138] the Saturn is considered a commercial failure. It was an oopsie everywhere.

Yeah so strange how most of the best games were Japan-only. They seemed to focus on releasing 3D games in the West, most of which were way weaker than the 2D library.

Great video RGT 85, I like this new series your going to do. One little suggestion, if you decide not to do it that's fine I will still like it, I would like to see you start up these consoles, play some games on them, and give your general opinion on them; but only if you have the console your talking about in the video.

I enjoyed the video, you went into a lot of detail (although some was incorrect). My only bit of constructive criticism, (which really doesn't matter to me in the end and is more about professionalism), is I think you should do more recording takes, break up sentences more, get every word perfect. When there are no errors it really makes a difference. Also, new series should have a new intro. :D

Definitely a Sega of Japan pride issue, but overall a good product hindered by slow or inferior software releases. The best games on the Saturn at launch were PANZER DRAGOON and Virtua Fighter, but Sony had Namco rolling out some supreme arcade hits back to back. And by January of 96 Resident Evil released and nailed success to the wall. We got Sega of America trying to catch up. Shame too. Saturn was pretty powerful and did play a good game of Virtual On.

The most fun with sega messing it up royally was seeing Am2/3 pull out all stops to release vf2, sega rally and virtua cop. It was such an exciting time seeing what these masters could do with the system. In the right hands the saturn was a beast.
@IMDLEGEND6 жыл бұрын
Love the new show! I agree with all of the reasons. Another one that you alluded to was the Saturn being $100 more than the Playstation at launch. I like the show because if we don't learn from history, we repeat it. For example, It seems that Microsoft followed a similar path with the XBOX One that Sega did with the Saturn ($100 more than the competition at launch, with a console widely viewed to be technically inferior to the Playstation Console, no major flagship title at launch).

Think you need to do more of these type of videos, i appreciate that there's so much gaming news that seems to come out daily and most of the news I get is from your videos, but I didn't know that Sega had no confidence in 3d and also they thought 3d was in fact a fad. I honestly don't know anyone growing up that had a Saturn (including the local rich kid that had everything including the 32x and Sega CD). So more vids like this please!

It's actually a shame what happened to the Saturn in the States. Back in the day, I thought the Saturn was a big success. In fact, today I know it actually was in it's first years in Portugal. Since there was no internet and I didn't really had access to magazines, I didn't knew how the Saturn was going at the rest of the world. The Saturn was very well promoted here, and most of the people who played videogames were already owners of the Mega Drive/Genesis or the Master System, so the upgrade was obvious. The Saturn was my choice for the 5th generation and it's still my favourite console to this day, thanks to that game called Panzer Dragoon Saga. Damn...what a game experience. Playing it at the time was simply beautiful. Something that new players will not feel today, no matter how they enjoy RPG's. Virtua Fighter 2 was mind-blowing as well and my multiplayer gem. Finally...Exhumed (Power Slave)...simply no other like it to this day. Hard console to appreciate those days but it's great to see that more and more people are getting interested in it.

@kevinstrade27526 жыл бұрын
A common misconception is that the Saturn and Sega weren't 3d focused. Wrong, Sega had brought 3D polygons into the arcades and were pioneers in the 3d front. Virtual fighter, virtual racer, Daytona were all out before the Saturn. The biggest problem for 3D with the Saturn were developers. While Sega could do 3D on the Saturn early on, it took longer for developers to unlock this complex machine. So 3D development lagged on the Saturn while the ps1 was developed for ease of 3d game making..
