Best comment I ever heard about the Alpinist is that it doesn't go with any outfits on purpose, it's a watch thats made to stand out and that's exactly what it does in any scenario. I have owned one for a few months now and wear it on an oyster style bracelet and there is really no other watch out there like it!

I dont get the hype around the hulk submariner. The green is bright and shouty, and it doesn't have the same kind of vibrant foresty depth that the alpinist does. The hulk only gets a pass because it's a Rolex, plain and simple

I absolutely detest the stupid compass dial. I’m in the north of England. I’d have to travel a thousand miles to see the sun, assuming it exists. If this watch had an internal dive bezel I would have bought one. Or a rainfall gauge. Something useful that doesn’t depend upon a mythical sun that not been seen for hundreds of years.

It can be used creatively without the sun using topo map waypoints; and the north marker can be set as a timer for minutes or hours, elapsed or countdown, and also as a reminder what time to turn back if you have not yet reached the summit (Alpinist - it's for climbers).

I don't wear it much because it doesn't go with a whole lot of outfits, but that doesn't mean I love it any less. It's a weird, wonderful piece, and it's going nowhere.

I love it, but am outdoors, hiking, backpacking... used it in SAR a few weeks ago in the Sierra. Off trail roaming all over... then wore it to the office Monday... and it fits right in. Green is my favorite color though... and this seems to offer several shades. I hope to give it to my son when he gets older... that green dial will remind him to work hard... onward and upward. Hmm... or maybe that his dad's a dork. Either way really.

I don't hate, or love the alpinist. The thing that I do like about it is the specs. 200m water resistance, the compass is cool, the size is good, and I just love the hands. But I think it looks a bit too dressy and at the same time be a sport watch. I also dont like the combination of a steel case, gold numerals and hands, and a glossy green dial, it's too much. I won't get one, but I certainly don't hate it

I love my Alpinist. It really goes with everything and any situation. I have used the compass while hiking the Grand Tetons (although a real compass is so much easier to use), The bezel can be used as a timer bezel or even to keep track of the days of the week. Wear it with confidence. We all love the Hulk, but a confident, well groomed man wearing an Alpinist compared to a self conscious novice wearing a Sub wins out any day.

I love the green on the Alpinist. It is what gives it character, same as the Hulk. I grabbed up a SLA019 and love the green dial and gold accents (I am on the fence about the Prospex X in lieu of the Marinemaster lettering on the dial.

I want to start off by saying you're the reason I got an Alpinist, so thank you for the exposure to such an amazing piece. Also, I think the fact that the "Hulk" carries the Rolex name allows people to validate it with anything they wear. This doesn't mean Seiko is a lesser brand but also that's what it means, in the eye of many at least. Seiko is seen as a mass creator of department store Quartz watches, not supreme quality timepieces, like Rolex is strictly known for. That's how I see it. I love both, got an Alpinist. Neither are for everyone and there's nothing wrong with that. At least they aren't Invictas..

I wear the Alpinist on my outdoor adventures, so the green dial and a green NATO strap fit right into that environment. I can do without the compass ring, but the gold accents go well with my wedding ring. The Alpinist is my non work EDC, but when putting on the Red Wing work boots I am wearing the Victorinox Infantry quartz version with brown dial, gold tone, AR Sapphire, 100M water on brown worn leather strap. As a field tech for telco feels right and meets my cost carry comfort curve while the Alpinist is my EDC. Like your three watch collection, mine are complete sets.... Watch, knife, pen, lighter, shoes. The activity determines the shoe which determines the gear being carried along with related costs. Boots, casual, dress.

green and darker grey are excellent field watch colours. the issue a lot of people (me included) have with this watch is the gold hands and markers. this would be a near perfect watch if the gold was replaced by silver.

The two things I like most about the Alpinist are the colors and it's uniqueness. There's something about that shade of green combined with the gold indices that just works. Plus, there are few other watches I've seen like it. If I owned a Hulk, I don't think I'd be comfortable wearing something that expensive out & about, whereas I don't have that concern with my Alpinist. I finally slapped it on a Stapcode oyster bracelet with polished mid-links, and it looks like a completely different watch!

I really like how Seiko does green. I own an Alpinist (on strapcode Angus jubilee bracelet) and think it goes with everything. I recently spotted a Seiko Recraft (SNKP27) at my local Sam's club and fell in love with that look as well. Alas, there's only room for one green and gold dialed watch in my collection and the Alpinist currently occupies that spot.

Alpinist on a Strapcode Oyster has been a winning combination for me. It's quite a polarizing watch, most tend to love it or hate it, and I just happen to be on the 'loving it' side. I also enjoy the Rolex Hulk, and can appreciate both for what they bring to the table. Just have a thing for green, I suppose.

I have 6 green in my collection right now a Certina Action Diver, Seiko Recraft, and a $5 Chinese watch, an Alpinist, a Hulk and a Deep Blue. I purposely try to add some color. I think your argument is based on people's love of luxury goods and thus comparing the green of the Rolex is like comparing a British racing green MG to a green Toyota Corolla. The alpinist green is like a slime or snot green. Kinda like the stuff I see in the ER when I put gastric tubes in people for drainage purposes. The Hulk has a “Mint” green kinda look. And a few shades lighter in coloration makes all the difference.

Simply put: one is a seiko the other is rolex . Branding and marketing to people who are less educated in watches, and or care more about luxury items, (Not everyone buys a Ferrari because they love the track day, but because it's expensive and it's an image thing). my favorite alpinist is the sbcj031, wish I owed one. And my favorite everyday watch is a green seiko 5 7s26 02j0.

Great discussion Jory. While I am a big fan of the Alpinist, I would play devil's advocate and argue that the thing that throws some off is the gold with the green dial. I think in general there is a modern dissonance with regards to gold in watches, and when compounded by a less common color choice such as green, it may feel for some to be too abstract for versatility. I think if they released a variant with silver markings that would make it more feasible and appealing for those concerned with dailying it. Cheers.

I think the Seiko Alpinist is a beautiful watch. I like the uniqueness of the green watch face. I'm not concerned with whether it "goes" with what I'm wearing because unless you are wearing an orange leisure suit, it will go with anything. BTW - if you are wearing an orange leisure suit you have much bigger problems than a watch that doesn't match your outfit.

It's classic. I have mines on a Nato and its rocks. Now they have stopped making the sarb 033 , 035 and the Aplinist, Sekio now only put the 6r15 movements into more expensive watches, double/triple the price. It punches above it weight.

I love the Sarb017 but I feel that it would have been that little bit more versatile with silver indices like the Blue Alpinist. That being said, I think its a great little piece and I wear mine almost every day

I haven't seen any of them first hand, but the Alpinst is growing on me. I've always been interested in mountains, I study them in maps, hike them and climb them. The Alpinist has this vibe of classic/vintage mountaineering that makes you think of the pioneering days of high altitude climbing. I try to keep my collection slim, so I don't think there will be a spot for the Alpinist, but from not caring much for it initially, I now think it's pretty cool. The Hulk on the other hand, does not spark the slightest interest.

Green gold and high polished is quite different from green, white (large lume dots) and brushed. The Rolex's green is also a different shade of green that is also better balanced out with the bracelet and brushed finish. The alpinist looks awesome as it is though. It is after all instantly recognizable with that dial and the extra 4o'clock crown.

Hi from New England. You said the magic word. The Alpinist is much more versatile than the Hulk!!! You can wear it dressed up or down. The Hulk doesn't have the classy look of the Alpinist. The shade of green on the Alpinist is way prettier but also sudated so not to stand out as much. But that's just my opinion!!! Jory, my Aunt and I went to the Maple Barn and had a wonderful bfast. I had a Seiko SNKP27 Recraft and loved the green. Didn't like the gold. Sold it. I like the Apinist as well and am tempted to buy one but; the gold. I just wouldn't wear it. But the real reason why people like the Hulk and not the Alpinist is actually really easy. You see on the Hulk where it says "Rolex?" That's it. That's all. It's a Rolex.
