Blame is indeed the "what the fuck am I reading" manga. Not because of the story or worldbuilding, but because you constantly wonder what literally you are the fuck reading in the panels.

really? I feel like there's not much to be confused about since the guy literally just move around trying to find the net terminal genes and coming across various enemies/characters. I think if you're confused, its probably bc you're trying too hard to invent some kind of elaborate plot to those details.

I read this when I was 13. I wasn't able to appreciate it, and it actually annoyed me. My uncle bought me the box set with a letter that said "Have fun." It wasn't until I was 19... LAST YEAR that I finally understand the letter. He meant "have fun trying to understand this story." I still don't understand it, but through the multiple attempts of trying to, I can say that it is not meant to be understood. What it has done is give me a whole new level of appreciation for manga and I already had an obsession; it also gave me a new perspective on life and I find myself paying attention to things that I normally wouldn't. This too is among my favorites.

I love this manga to the bottom of my heart. I love its tone dark, depress and grim and lonely. I love the world of Blame. I love how the story through only action and little words, we can get the meaning of the story and how meaningless Killy's journey can be. Killy's only purpose is to revive humanity but after reading the story, there is no true human left, after thousand and thousand of years, the fragment of humans are now either mutated or symbolized. His goal was long lost, and through thousands of years, he even lost memory of what he was and what the world around him, he can't even die so he has to chase the only goal that does not even matter to him and is only a mirage. He travels far and long, fights with all types of creatures, through all hardness in the end he overcomes all of them but in the end, it never matters anymore even to him. To him it's just a mission, that begs a question for me is it really matter at all to revive a human when there's no real human left, and what's the purpose of his life. To me this story is a combination of existentialism and nihilism, he exists in this world but nothing in this really matters anymore, not even him. This is really a resemblance to the movie blade runner 2049, where the main character slowly realizes that he is just a decoy and his whole life has no meaning at all. In the end, Killy still remain on his human side by saving other human and the last of his enemy in the blame! 2 short story.

I feel like resurrecting a true human or something is an ideal or aspiration or dream. When I think about how the MC could be chasing an ideal he doesn't even understand or a dream he has forgotten or aspiration he doesn't care about anymore yet still moves forward towards the goal, I think it's neat and can help resolve some personal stuff. It's something because the only other thing, the MC knows is death and he doesn't want it.

It is heavily implied if not outright told that there's still "authority" left in megastructure, deep at the core of it all theres still old humanity surviving whatever happened to netsphere and loss of human control of megastructure and it's rampant expansion. At the end of the Blame! killy starts his return journey from very edge of megastructure back towards the center of megastructure with child that has genes to admin netsphere and cleanse it, supposedly heading towards this "authority". There's even some short stories and one shot spinoff ("netsphere engineer" it was called) about this child all grown up, roaming megastructure like killy once did, helping fragments and offshoots of humanity slowly regain control of megastructure, or at least traverse it without triggering any safeguard killbots.

All else aside, Blame! Is a master class in visual storytelling. You do not need characters to constantly chatter away, to explain every little thing in tireless detail. The visuals and action convey a lot, and the mysteries of what's not explained, what's implied, are part of what pull you in. It is not for everyone, nothing is, but it does the things it's doing so fantastically well it's absurd

BLAME as a story for me is a From SOftware storytelling but in a comic form instead of game form. You get the jist and reasons for main character's adventure, but once you go along with the jurney you learn about the world from details and implications. Example: Toha Heavy Industries, a prevailing company in Nihei's work, which first appears in BLAME and from what people in world say- is an outside to the vast Megastructure- Central, AI "ruling" THI, has a treaty of non-agression with forces policing Megastructure. The question is then- from where are they? And the implied answer is that THI is are from external dimension- their building is like a shard impaled into the Megastructure, mostly staying around outdated power sources (the crystals, several characters point out these are "outdated" tech) and their most important piece of technology called Forwarding has a side effect of teleporting people into parallel dimensions (protagonist expirences that glitch after getting caught in teleportation of two character working for Central). And funniest thing is- this whole thing is a quite plausible theory elaborated on from world details and the spare dialogue
@TheThreatenedSwan
@TheThreatenedSwan Жыл бұрын
Probably not. It's being left alone by the megastructure and the megastructure seemingly growing/shifting around it counts against it being foreign to the megastructure. Humans are also native to the megastructure
@masterzoroark6664
@masterzoroark6664 Жыл бұрын
@@TheThreatenedSwan Maybe. Interpretations are many. Mine was caused by, as said, the glitchy teleportation tech Toha uses. Yeah, they might as well been from the main universe and tried to escape, but still ended up inside the megastructure due to calculation errors, but it's far more fascinating if they are from parallel universe and by trying to escape their megastructure they ended up in the megastructure of universe we seen
@TheThreatenedSwan
@TheThreatenedSwan Жыл бұрын
@@masterzoroark6664 It seems like the best interpretation would be they came from either the past or further along the same timeline since the megastructure was made for humans and controlled using the net terminal genes. Personally, I feel as if Blame!/ NoiSe are the most complete works Nihei has done. Yes there are others, but these felt more passionate, more fleshed out. Abara was great, Biomega too. And I loved most of Aposimz, not so much the end. But it feels like he keeps trying to tell a specific type of story in a near impossible setting. Knights of Sidonia was great, followed a clear path, but also had elements of his past works. The GBE (my favorite sci-fi weapon) is in both KoS and Blame!, and Toha Heavy Industries also appears multiple times. I love that he builds upon his ideas further, layering them much like the Megastructure itself. Nihei is great at expressing ideas in unexpected ways. I’m glad I own the manga that still gets so much attention for its unique storytelling method and that so many have experienced something from it. I wish I could properly express my gratitude to Nihei. I bought Blame! just before college, and it has remained in my mind to this day. It opened me up to reading new mangas, lesser known or not. To truly appreciate the work put in by the artists. No AI can ever make anything like this. I’m glad to have existed in a time where everything unfolded around me to have such experiences. Yea, this manga hit me hard back in the day. I still wrap my mind around its’ concepts. To quote page 3: “Maybe on Earth. Maybe in the future.” That, drew me in.

A really sad story I've read is that Nihei's daughter once asked him something along the lines of "Why don't you make a cool manga like Shingeki no Kyojin?" This is genuinely one of the most heartbreaking things a peerless visionary can hear about his craft. Even in the world of manga when there is so many arcane and unconventional styles, I can imagine the struggles Nihei would endure trying to reconcile his artistic vision with appealing to the lowest common denominator. It awesome to see people are able to appreciate and love all the work and creativity in Blame! despite how unique and weird it is. The first time I read it, for the next couple weeks i found myself just getting lost in my own mind's reconstruction of the lore and world of the Megastructure. That pewdiepie video put so much of my feelings into words, and probably is my favorite youtube video to this day. Blame! is probably of one the most personally profound experiences for me, and it's really awesome to see it still getting attention and resonating with people today.

There was this manga I came across and by total accident. I was looking for a manga called hajime no ippo, but while searching for that I came across something that caught my attention called, “Ippo.” I got curious and started reading. To this day it is my favorite manga, and a hidden gem that more people should know about. Also I recommend you read it. It’s about shoes believe it or not. Though that wasn’t what caught my attention. It was the artstyle. It was simple but for some reason, it just felt perfect. Ippo managed to be a comfortable story with no twists, no villains, no exciting plot. It’s just about a young guy who makes sures for people. Though the thing that fascinated me the most, was how ippo interacted with his customers. I recommend you read it yourself to figure out what I mean by that.

I've always been a big fan of body horror, which is why I love Claymore, and the design of the world and characters really hits that niche for me. Damn you just don't miss huh... I really liked this one - your personal takes just hit different and it is clear to see that your investment for stories go far beyond the surface level reading experience. Always appreciating the effort man - thanks for making this. It's so cool seeing other people being so open about what they are passionate about, even going as far as you on how you came across this manga - really really love it. It's all about expression man and seeing how different stories have different effects on different people... IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL. I think it really is possible to get to know someone through the stories they love. We "discussed" this at your last vid a bit so yea ... :D Art is such a great way to connect with other people and if we just could passionately talk about it the way you and other people try to, then there wouldn't be these toxic discussions on what is "objectively" good and what not. You really set a good example for the community. Never change bud. Also, nice hearing you had an upbringing in Germany, man merkt dir den Akzent nicht an haha - - - - - - - - - - - About that special thing,... that would be Hunter x Hunter without a doubt. It changed so many things for me, honestly. The very way how i saw stories and what you can do... I think it is really difficult to recommend HxH to someone nowadays without setting up wrong expectations. Many people just blatantly say it's "dark" or just hyping up the CA arc... Yet there are so many small the things i could appeciate which were so specific to what i wanted to see in a story. There is this really minor scene a bit into the first exam where Gon waits for Leorio cause he got wasted during the run. He doesn't say anything. Many chars from his ilk would say something motivational yet he just waits for Leorio to find his footing again. And after he does... MA BOI LEORIO RUNS Gon smiles and grabs his suitcase without hesitation with his fishing rod. Small moments of characterization like these are everywhere in HxH. It always subverts my expectations in very delicate and subtle ways. Also, ... while Gon is running with the suitcase, it's never really addressed or treated as something more than it actually is. Gon just does it. Gives it later to Leorio. And thats that. No big thanks - nothing. It just feels so natural to what homies would do. But anime tends to avoid these kind of smaller moments, which is a shame, really. Anyways, HxH did so many things i've never seen before and as of now, it basically became part of my life. I re-visit it at least once a year and it always is the best story i experience that year. I really feel close to these chars and love them. It is the only story where i actually could make a Top10 fav chars list because i fell in love with so many over these years. I watched it in the christmas week of 2015 and finished it around new years... I just love it Anyways, thanks for making vid's man, i always feel inspired to write something or just share my thoughts for stories when listening to other people being passionate~ Aaaaand by any chance, do you have a mal acc, I would love to see which stories you like and which not - could maybe recommend something to you then :D

I was one of those people that watched HxH SUUUUUUPER LATE. I had a friend basically tell me to stop what I was doing and to start watching it immediately and I ended up finding the Hunter exams one of my favorite arcs in all of anime. Mainly cuz Gon's such a pure kid and you can't tell if the dude's got a crazy amount of perseverance or if he's just stupid. I'd have to say that's my #1 and 2 and 3 switches between Heaven's Arena and Yorknew City. Also yeah I think it's a bit boring to look at a story objectively and be like "Character Writing 7/10" "Plot 6/10" "Quality 5/10" and basically give it a grade as if I was a school teacher. I'd care way more to hear about why some shitty anime/manga meant a lot to someone out there. n the Mal thing... Imma be honest I never even knew what MAL was till recently and I cannot be asked to sit down n try to remember everything I've watched or read. Glad you loved it. The exam had so many fantastic moments from the whole 1st exam, to Killua ripping some guys' heart out to Gon, snatching Hisokas tag, to the Illumi reveal... Or seeing how Gon gets wrecked against Hanzo... which was so unexpected, yet felt so logical. It's all great. I love Gon with all my heart and i hate that ppl don't give him enough credit and only saw something more in him after this video from Alec about his morality. As if people couldn't think for themselves,... and now people ONLY reduce him to that and some even say he's a psychopath... UGH but yea im glad you liked him. Ye same, i mean i see problems with my faves but what i love about them and what they did for me far outshine the negatives. I just recently thought about a manga which made me go like "this feels like an 8" ... and now i'm coming up with a "scoring system" that really captures on how i feel about specific shows. an 8/10 is basically the most "balanced score" no big ups no big downs - just pure and constant enjoyment... mangas that i heavily enjoy but just wouldn't make my fav list. everything above just touched me personally more but i think "8's are the best to recommend" if that makes sense im just listing some of and maybe you havent read one of em (: (lately i've been thinking alot about these 2 so yea) - Slam Dunk (beautiful paneling and pacing during the games) - Liar Game (great mindgames with fun twists and clever chars) then those - My Home Hero (similar to Liar Game it is very mindgame focused i'd say it's just what would happen if Death Note meets Breaking Bad) - Legend of the strongest Man Kurosawa (beautiful SoL of a 44 yo guy in his midlife crisis) - Ichi the Killer (prob one of the best paced manga you will find ... it's really gory but it is extremely fun ... i just think you would enjoy it)

In the roleplaying game called Mage: the Awakening, mages have concepts and artifacts that resonate with their soul, or at least, they have the capability to form those connections. Things that touch the soul and leave a mark is what the concept seems to me. As for my own taste, Chrono Cross and everything about it is wonderful to me. I grew up playing it, and it's still just as wonderous to me now as it was back in about 2000 when I first played it. There's a song that feels that way too, but I have no idea what it's called or even how to search for it.

Quick trivia: Nihei, the author of the manga, has another one called "Abara" it's rumored to be a reference material to chainsaw man with denji and nayuta's name in the series, the manga also contains illustrations of Abaras which is inarguably identical to Chainsaw man's true form.

I've been a BLAME and Nihei fan for over a decade (closer to 12-13 years by now) and it always warms my heart to see new waves of anime/manga fans getting into Nihei-sensei's work. Very very few others delve into the idea of a sort of cyber-gothic horror as Nihei does, let alone so effortlessly and so often. Back when I was reading this for the first time, I was still riding a big wave of London dubstep - stuff like Kode9, Mala, Burial, that wave of abyssally deep and dark bass music- and in my head that's still the sound that echoes across Nihei's cavernous reaches of architectural space

the fact you've never watched ANYTHING pertaining to xenomorphs makes me feel a way I can't describe. Oh he's missing out for sure, English isn't my first language, so I didn't grow up with it either, but I watched the movies a few years ago, and holy hell, I still have no idea how to describe the feelings I had, it may have been partly due to what was going on in my life at that time, but either way the whole aesthetic of that universe was so interesting.

I remember when I pick up blame! along time ago it's the perfect manga for me as back in my days manga are very hard to find and in my country they are mostly in chinese or sometimes japanese which both I can't read. I know it's weird, I'm a chinese living in a country where not everyone can read chinese but in the same time the only manga you get is the chinese version. I've been reading manga and manhua before I can read anything so I've develope this skill to pretty accurately guess what's going on without needed to read anything.

No joke, this is down right my favorite manga next to Berserk. Oddly enough what got me into it was the trailer for the movie that was before the Pewd video. It really does raise your level of critical thinking to figure out what the hell is going on and would your purpose be of your own freewill in that world. Edit: Christ I wrote this before watching the video so the words were already taken out of my mouth. Props my man. P.S: Profile pic is from another Nihei manga.

@Ah Lecks the thing that's near and dear to my heart is human expression through creative outlets like manga, art, music, etc. It is humans that pour out their views into a medium to express what they think or feel, and i find most of those creative outlets fascinating! Maybe this is looking to much into why i love so many different art forms but i that anything that people create has intrinsic value, especially if they are able to communicate their soul into a medium clearly. That is what I value. Hope that answers what you asked for. have a good one.

just finished reading blame and wow i really liked it, the entire thing is set up to be a journey an experience something that you yourself have to find out , i think this is really cool because of the fact that they're basically treating the reader the same way the story treats Killy a world that you have to just take on and keep going until you achieve your goal, BLAME reminds me of Gantz in more than one way since there's a lot of themes and concepts that correlate not to mention they both have a protagonist who wears a cool suit, uses an incredibly op weapon and both ends the story in a very different way than how they started, Gantz being my favorite manga of all time it would be a crime not to give blame at least a 9/10 from my part.

Wow.. seriously what a great video to pass the time. 10 out of 10 entertainment value. I really like how he leveled a very obscure subject matter to make it very engaging.Highly supported by how good and intriguing the art is (thanks for actually showing it!) but the commentary is actually entertaining as hell without being pretentious at all.
@moyga

Maybe you read it too fast. I read it really slowly because I was reading it in a 2nd language so I had to pay attention to every word. If you really pay attention to the art and what is said, I think there is actually a lot of story telling and world building. You just have to piece it together slowly yourself as you move through. It's a great story to re-read a 2nd time because you will pick up on tons of details you missed the first time. I also think that style of storytelling is very deliberate in order to make you feel a particular way and create a certain mood that makes the world of the story feel a lot more immersive and helps you share similar feelings to the characters in the story. It's quite similar to Darksouls 1 in that way. I think the way its told really creates a kind of psychological experience in a way that most other manga doesn't.

That special thing to me is berserk. I’ve been reading it for like 2 years, but that’s mainly because I take long breaks in between arcs. I don’t want it to end, so I only read further ahead when I’ve had a really rough day or a changed decision or when my motivation is absolutely dead. I guess it’s just the thing that I’ve always looked for in a story that also just somehow feels relatable. I guess special is just the sense of child like jubilance that makes you feel warm, and that’s what makes something special I think.

Mage The Ascension. I have played many Rpgs through many years, but this game with its lore and setting, how everything works and that everyone lost. The idea that the great game, the goal to which all groups in this setting go to is lost before you even sat at the table. You can do that?! My teenage mind was blown, I still have the books, many many years later, and read them from time to time. I love this game, it's not for everyone, but for me the game asking not the question "how you will win?" but "how much will you sacrifice to not lose?" is something special.
