I Am A Hero has the most amazing art. I love the horrific monstrosities and we get introduced so quickly to his schizophrenia that it becomes difficult to trust what's happening on the panels we see. You bringing it up in the last vid got me to pick this series back up again because I realized I'd never finished it. There's something about the characters that makes them feel very *real*. Hideo 100% acts and talks like someone you could know. This video is really good! Knocked it out of the park!

There’s also a live action movie of I am a hero. It leaves out all of the schizophrenia and hallucinations, and visually there’s no way it can stand close to Hanazawa’s artwork, but I thought it was still pretty enjoyable if you wanna check it out. Awesome video.

On the whole idea of this all being in hideo's head, part of the reason this manga is so good is because whenever you see an eldrich abomination, you dont know whether or not its a hallucination or 3 seconds away from ending the story. That unknown, being in the headspace of a schizophrenic in a genuine zombie apocalypse, that's the point of the story. Theorising about which of the creatures and people he come across are actually real is cool, and sometimes fruitful, but I agree that going overboard and looking at everything can be harmful. It is, however, the state of the main character. He has no fucking clue whats real either, and is just tryna do his best.

I remember reading this manga a while back, while i was on my "psychiological horror phase" and thought that, "wow that was confusing". I never really got to truly took my time in appreciating the manga, since i got burn out and tired in reading it, with the huge amount of unncessary dialouges, random moments, etc... which caused me to not only rush the manga, But left me into not knowing anything. It left me so worried that you wouldn't continue the review, since i rarely see people cover this manga in an interesting degree than just a 5 minute summary. Overall thanks fo this video. It's good to see 'I Am A Hero' getting some long-due recognition. Its dirty, show-not-tell storytelling is a breath of fresh air and it gave me borderline trust issues because I could not predict what would happen next. That page in the Notre Dame cathedral with the you-know-what's silhouetted against the windows has got to be one of the scariest and best panels I've seen in manga.

Great video man, just discovered your channel. I read I am a Hero a year ago and it was a really fun ride but i didn't read to much into it. What i really liked was the visual storytelling. Rarely have i seen a manga using it's medium to convey it's horror so vividly - pushing what i felt was possible. I remember the moment where Hideo's gf tried to jump him while she was a zombie. Just 3 double spreads really making you feel trapped and anxious. Anyways, I like your takes on this story and your editing really compliments your points. Thanks for this vid and keep it going man

Based I Am A Hero reader/reviewer. Read this as it was coming out and man what an experience - also that art, its absolutely fantastic - I love looking at the manga omnibus from the top head and just seeing massive sections of black from all the inking. Some of those nature shots early on in the woods as well are just chef's kiss in the details, and really good of just setting up some of the feeling of overwhelming disorientation and dread of being lost. Not only that - the detail in a lot of the "zombies" and the like body horror is on point. Also love what I can only describe as firearm obsession in this - and the lengths that the mangaka goes into the explaining of the firearm laws in detail at parts, as someone whos had to do the same thing in a country where people think 99% of firearms are "banned" or "Illegal" - it strikes super close to home. Fantastic video my guy!

Yeah I couldn't find a way to squeeze in a segment about the "logistics" in the manga but every single niche in terms of noise was so well done. There wasn't much access to firearms in Japan, so the fact that they had a system of either using bb guns/crossbows/arm pillows made perfect sense. Or like the ways they would try to suppress noise or create a system of baiting other zombies was genius.

I read the manga after watching the first 5 minutes of this video, and it was worth every minute. It's flawed, but it feels like it has a soul. I started this manga and it takes several chapters to get to the apocalypse. I know that’s not the most important thing, the early chapters are great for learning his character but I was just so ready to see a psycho fight zombies but I wasn’t ready for an actual slow burn well written story. There is a way to do a coma story, but like those things you mentioned most of them do not work. The short version is Omori takes place mostly in Sunny's head. We meet characters in dreams but we also see them in the real world. We see similarities and differences and how Sunny sees the world at times. With the mystery of Sunny's sister. Almost everything is a dream, yet that dream is done to show Sunny's feelings on the event and trying to come to terms with whatever happened to his sister. There is even moments where trauma influences the real world. The coma/dream experience only works if you tie it heavily in reality and have the truth in the dream and have the truth locked there. These are great story telling devices for trauma and pain. Most people aren't able to use them effectively since it requires having an distant character who doesn't fit in to explain why it is only solvable there. It also requires making the character likable.

maybe this information will disappoint you abit but alot of the backgrounds in the manga are actually just real pictures modified and edited to black and white (or maybe with a 3d software?) you can tell its pictures because it has that sandpaper look thing if you zoom in this is why the characters clothes, face and everything is so detailed - because the mangaka spends more time on those than the backgrounds nonetheless, the art is still very impressive and incredible

Jesus this manga is actually something I want to read because it hits a little close to home. I have struggled with bipolar disorder since I was a child and when I am on medicated I get severely manic and hallucinate and enter delusional State similar to someone with schizophrenia, and I've always wondered what would happen if a zombie apocalypse started and I was unable to get my mood stabilizer. Granted I could probably steal lithium from a pharmacy but I would have to fight off everyone looking for antibiotics and other drugs, and if I lost weight or gained weight or anything in my body changed to mess with my dose I wouldn't be able to get a lithium level to see if I'm out of therapeutic amount or not, I would have to base my dosing off of simply how I feel and just watch for symptoms of overdose or toxicity or watch her symptoms of it being too low and me having mental health issues as a result. When 9/11 happened I was a kid but I could barely understand if what was going on was real or not because I was unmedicated, so what would happen if I was trying to take care of myself or my children during an apocalypse and couldn't get my meds? Would I even have any self-preservation instincts in that state? Would I be able to function at all? Where would I possibly be better at killing zombies and evading detection because I would be more paranoid and isolative...? It's really interesting to think about how people with disabilities are mental illnesses would be affected in situations like that especially after seeing how all of us dealt with covid and 9/11 when those incidents happened. Also I voice typed this message so if there's any typos I'm really sorry I'm not going to fix them.

Oh man I was afraid that the schizophrenic character would end up becoming the bad guy but I'm glad the thought of "nothing is real" was immediately rejected bc there are enough villain characters with "schizophrenia" in the media As much as I hate zombies (I'm scared of them), I LOVE unreliable narrators and def will try this book out

What i found to be most interesting from what ive read so far is when hideo was in the forest trying to calm himself down, the rant we got never even happened in reality, when we see it through hiromi's eyes it was a completely different thing he was saying. Which takes us back to when he was talking to tekko and started screaming out of nowhere only for us to see that he was just sulking with his head down

i've just finished reading this and imo the hallucinations are only in the beginning and when yajima appears hideo himself says or implies that at one point that he stopped hallucinating because he was so focused on survival and also there are other groups going through the zqn pandemic.

HEYY THIS MAYBE IT MY BOY!!!! For some reason in EXTREMELY stressful real life situations my brain can focus on handling it or solving it…but trying to fucking pick out headphones at Walmart is Soo stressful I start having a psychotic episode…so genuinely schizophrenia only fucks with you when it needs to to fuck your life sometimes lol. If your life is alllreeeeaadddyyy fucking you up enough it’s like the disorder is take a break lol as long as you are tripping enough the disorder will sit on the sidelines….it may be just me tho??

I read this a few years ago and definitely read it too fast. I genuinely never realized the schizophrenic aspect of the manga! This made the story make more sense, oddly enough.

I don't think I've ever watched a video that perfectly encapsulated how it felt reading a manga as insane as this one Although I do wanna say.....most if not all the backgrounds in I am a Hero (and Oyasumi Punpun) were photos that the Mangaka took for each and every panel Apparently Kengo Hanazawa literally camped out in a forest to get pics for some earlier chapters
