Compared to games, movies and even anime. Manga can be a super visceral experience, it’s like reading an authors soul through pictures and words. The fact that many manga are made by a single person and require so much time and effort I find I can connect to the stories and characters more through manga.

Visceral is the term, also mangas are way less censored than anime, I really noticed that in Kaiji personally, the censoring of stuff really was a let down for what the story is doing.

Read Land of the Lustrous! The art and paneling might seem basic at a glance, but it's actually quite intentional and is a lovely style for bringing scenes to life. While it's releasing pretty slowly, the story that is already out there is satisfying. The development and corruption of characters is handled very believably, and you'll either come to love most of the characters or hate them

The concepts of "paneling" & "the page turn" & "visual storytelling" conveyed through a lens of black white and gray, is just so powerful and creates a truly unique and impactful experience. Could show many examples of them and just gush for an hour or two lol. Also dudes in japan just be bonkers with their stories its crazy and im here for it. Sometimes i read somethin or watch it or do both, it depends on how im feelin im really impulsive with my media. Also i see no need to get pretnetious over those things lol. Ive always enjoyed comics i read as much as i could when i was a kid, many being way too violent but i enjoyed it nonetheless. I always rushed to the small graphic novel area in m ylibrary lookin for more media to consume (Geronimo Stilton my beloved). Needless to say i ended up stumbling across some manga: Legend Of Zelda Oracle of Seasons & Ages, Leave it to pet, Pokemon D&P, and some random baseball stuff. And in retrospect ive realized how much these works have deeply influenced me. THey were manily video game manga, which i have developed an unexpected passion for as of recent. genuinely suprising how good some of that stuff is. The one for megaman battle network goes dummy and Bass is sick af. And finally delving into manga and gettin to the "real shit", i find myself constantly inspired and entertained. yooooo BLAME! less go. Honestly such a great example of the power of manga. (hells paradise is peak fiction 😉) keep it up and have a good one o7

Berserk has plenty of these but cause of the Chainsaw Man love here, Gun Fiend reveal was a fucking brutal page turn. I think the first time I really felt a page turn was when I had read Devilman way back, this was even before I was as into manga, however the scene of the uhh, head, we'll say, to not spoil for those who haven't read or watched Crybaby, is brutal in the original. I feel like experiencing it again in Crybaby was still effective, however the actual nature of the slow shot to show what's happening isn't as visceral as the page turn, which allows for some of the most impactful moments. I really recognized this when I properly read Berserk.

bro this video was beautiful I started reading manga back in 2016 because of Hunter x Hunter. It wasn't like that i wanted to know how it continues but i was rather interested in learning how the creator wrote the story and how the elements that i loved in the 2011 adaptation were executed in it's source material. I was fascinated by it's storytelling and i wanted to get 100 % of Togashi's narrative. From that on i read Inuyashiki and all the big notable mangas such as Berserk, 20th Century Boys, Vagabond,... you name it... And after reading a bunch of series i learned to appreciate a lot of things unique to the medium. Like you put it, the "Gift". - unique artstlyes and clothing choices + backrounds - the amount of double spreads and giving attention to certain moments - playing with colors and contrasts (like in Berserk with black and white) - panel layouts and how you could bend the medium to your advantage... There was just so much you could get out of this medium and like you said that feels so much more personal cause it was done by 1 person. I think it comes all down to the simple fact that real passion is infectious. I love how you express yourself and your love for Chainsawman and im already hyped for your video about it :D I also liked the fact that you didn't shy away from giving love to SuperEyePatchWolf. Besides manga and music i think youtube is one platform that allows people to create something they can do 100 % by themselves. You should feel proud about the videos you already did cause you may do the same thing for someone as chainsawman did for you. Didn't intend to write something so big but it's rare nowadays finding ppl online who truly are passionate about the things they talk about and therefore inspire other ppl. Thanks for your great content man much love

I'm not even gonna lie this one got me a little emotional. Where do I start... First of all, that means so much to me because my only goal with making this channel is to grow discussion on manga and introduce maybe one or two people to something they might've never heard of. I have an appreciation for anime but it's on a completely different perspective as opposed to when I read manga. It's like you mentioned, it's the fact that I can look at something so incredible and realize the capabilities of one single person. The human mind is capable of creating such beautiful things that gets undermined all the time since we're exposed to it all the time. But thank you for spending the time to write that. I was at work while reading this n I got a lil' teary cuz I really do hope one day I can make something as cool or emotionally driven as these Mangakas that inspire me or like Super Eyepatch Wolf.

They are at some points just incommensurable, sometimes the story will just be better as anime, other times the manga has perfect aesthetic that just can't be translated into animation. You should look out for some stories that are good as manga and those that are good as anime. Good mangas could be Tokyo Ghoul, Blame!, Berserk to name a few and good animes could be Psycho-Pass, Alderamin in the Sky and Darker than Black.

Very hype for this one. This is a topic I'm interested in your thoughts since I've always preferred to read the manga, though sometimes the music and other stuff of the anime does add a lot to the story. Dr. Stone I think I enjoyed the anime more than the manga because of a lot of those factors.

I'm very happy with your final thoughts on the topic. I'm 100% with you, I can understand why people prefer to watch anime but I've always preferred reading manga. Also HYPE AS FUCK for the manga you mentioned you're reading/going to read now. Fucking bangers, all of them. If you like Sun Ken Rock you might also enjoy Origin by the same mangaka. Dr. Stone is by him as well, though I don't like it as much. It doesn't feel as gritty, but that's just my personal preference. Dorohedoro is very good and I think the anime does a decent job with it, but I don't think that the story could ever be portrayed 100% in any medium other than the original.

12:58 Here's my recommendation, read Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction by Inio Asano. You've read Punpun so you already know this guy is a genius. Imo, this manga is like the opposite of Punpun and actually kinda happy and fun (surprisingly). It's the most non-Inio Asano like Asano manga. It recently finished with 100 chapters and just got it's anime announced TODAY. I really love this series and I feel it's rather under appreciated. So I hope you'll check it out and maybe even make a video about it. That would be awesome.

Chainsaw Man is probably my favorite thing i've ever read, manga or not. I really felt for Denji, and his struggles. Watching him grow from the beginning to where we're at in the manga was just fantastic

Like many people, I stumbled across your channel thanks to your 30 Manga recs vid, but I wanted to comment on this one as it hits a little more close to home so here goes. Firstly, your editing and comedy style is truly fantastic. To me, it's clear some of the inspirations from other KZbinrs, but you give it your own flair which helps it stand out and it's great stuff. Secondly, I'd like to say that your whole idea of making this channel in the hopes of one day being able to explain your love for your favorite series is absolutely awesome and an incredibly cool goal to have. I have the same kind of feelings over Code Geass so it's a neat thing to see. and Lastly, I want to recommend a manga that is one of my favorites and taught me just how much I love manga as a medium which is Akumetsu. Easiest way to explain it is Death Note but better and with more gore. It's one of those series that if it isn't brought up in conversation by the people who love it, it'll fade into obscurity since it never got an anime to boost it. For me, it shows the level of raw emotion and incredible artistry that is only possible from a manga. That's why I love manga so much more than anime. You feel every stroke through the pages as the author conveys his imagination onto the page, each line giving off the exact emotion he hopes for you to feel, to understand. Anime may have intense fight scenes and incredible music, but manga has this richness which simply can't be replicated in a different art form. Anyway, once again you are making great videos and I can't wait to see more from ya!

I think the pacing is really what gets me. The more and more I watch anime the more I start to really get impatient. For me, the speed at which a story progresses is probably a top 2 most important factor so for something like one piece, after the time skip I just had to switch over to the manga. Binging the hell out of a story and reading upwards of 150 chapters a day this summer is just something I can't do with an anime. Maybe that's why I've been really into simple, easy digestible stories lately since if I try reading something more complex I tend to overwhelm myself with wanting to continue but not being able to.

Oh yeah, I love reading manga especially recently, more than anime themselves nowadays, its just nice to see how certain creators just pour their heart and soul into some of these panels, breathing life onto these pages, anime of course is a collective effort, but manga will be a solo if not 2 man job, so to see the work of what 1 or 2 people can do is special sometimes, I'm glad to see some manga adaptations feel special tho, mappa is doing amazing with Chainsaw man and Jujustu Kaisen

I think the original source material is usually the best. As you said, its usually the closest to the author and their vision, their style and the kind of heart of the work with the least stuff cut out or lost in translation. I first started reading manga for 2 main reasons: 1. I wanted to know what happened next in the story of an anime and found out the manga was ahead 2. I realised what 'fillers' were and that most of the stuff I hated in anime were fillers and that there are no fillers in the source material Then I started reading manhua and webtoons too. Later on, I found out some manga are based on light novels and then, again, because I wanted to know what happens next in the story I started reading light novels. Then I realised that manga and anime based on LN cut out tons of details and events and a lot of stuff gets lost in the transition. If you read an LN, then look at the manga and anime, they are usually way worse.

Anime gets amazing for me much more for the composition of voice acting, music and maybe the animation altogether, picturing Deku and Muscular for example. And as you said making all these work consistently is harder than the personal (insane) hardwork of manga which seems to allow more try and error for perfection. The way manga delivers the story generally fits nicer than the pace from a show specially with the dubbing as you mentioned. It could be compared to the perfect imagination you make when only reading letters on a book and the visual of its movie or series. Now I find myself lost on which way to go first when it has both but I am slightly favored towards the reading experience in general.

I've been getting into manga more and more recently, but even with the masterpieces and amazing stories I'm getting into and loving like Berserk, 20th Century Boys, etc., I have always just prefer animation. The audio visual experience just feels so alive when it's done right. Even when its just alright, music and voice acting goes a long way. Even when there isn't much animation, great storyboarding, illustration, and editing on top of great audio can make it feel whole and beautiful anyway. The anime industry as it is makes it hard not to be callous and prefer the relatively intimate, direct, complete, and equally valid manga medium, but those hardships, and the effort of everyone involved to bring a story to life when a production goes right always brings me back. There are plenty of manga that I wanna read over the anime adaptation (Tokyo Revengers being the prime example), so for my medium of choice, I'm just trying to find good adaptations and intriguing originals that aren't limited to adapting a manga. BTW: my favorite manga is Kaguya-Sama Love is War. The anime adaptation is amazing, so check that out if you can and read the manga too if you like it.

There are many reasons that make me love manga and novels. beyond the fact that i can read them any where without making any noise, a static image can display so much from the things it does not show. like how in god of hightschool, because it does not show the movement between a stance and the attack it makes things feel a lot faster, more dynamic and intense. and you can display so much with a single panel of someones face. be it dread and despair. or happiness and relief. no need for voice acting, no need for dialogue. it is like when you look at someone that is very close to you. and you both know what the other is thinking. it is calming.

Dandadan is sick! Some rare cases will have me feel the anime is like, the way to go, for example, Trigger or Shaft's best stuff is fascinating to watch, Trigger is a case where you feel the passion of everyone behind. Also some comedy work best with the assistance of voices, like Gintama. However overall, yeah, manga definitely has this kind of appeal. I think my favourite adaption has to be Golden Wind, as far as pure quality goes, however I wouldn't say it replaces the manga. Is simply one of the cases where like, the pace, energy, etc. of the manga feels so perfectly captured in the adaption. As far as recommendations go, check out Fukumoto's stuff if you haven't! Easiest recommendation is Legend of a Strongest Man Kurosawa, though his work I feel most connected to, even if through the anime, is Kaiji. Great stuff either way. Cool video!

I recently stumbled across your channel and thoroughly enjoyed everything you had to say. So much so that the day after binging all your videos I bought a subscription to viz media instead of using third party sites and I've been binge reading a lot of things like Kauiju No.8 or Tokyo Ghoul, etc. I feel like your point on how much easier manga can be to just pick up and read than anime is very true. Also that if a manga is doing a panel on a subject I might not enjoy I can just skip past it or how in an anime a fairly short panel could take several minutes to get through and just bore or annoy they audience.

I prefer watching anime because it’s just easier and I like color and sound I suppose. I can’t really say why. But manga is amazing. The art feels more detailed and I can appreciate it in a different way than in animation (not better but different). But the biggest reason I will root for manga is that it often has better character development and other details that weren’t adapted into the anime. And of course, since the manga comes first, it has more of the story after where ever the anime left off. Ive watched blue exorcist about four times but once I read the manga I was amazed by just how much story I was missing and I was so glad I decided to read it instead of rewatching it again.

I've been reading manga for almost all my life ever since I managed to get my hands on one, but man does it feel way better as I appreciate it more cause you know being a parent to two toddlers and having 0 time for myself to watch an episode uninterrupted, I can read a few chapters while putting the tykes to sleep...and maybe...just maybe keep what's left of my ever so dwindling, ever so thinning sanity a bit more in check.

*Yes. Yes and Yes. The manga is much more nuanced and deeper* I've read the series at least a dozen times and certain passages far more than that and I still pick up new information which connects themes, characters, and incidents across all 11 volumes. It's clear that Fujimoto planned the story and the world in great detail. Sometimes he tells, but the majority of the time one must put together all the clues and evidence. Putting together these clues and evidence is what makes me read it again and again. Nothing is as it seems. Finally, everything that happened in Part 1: Public Safety impacts Part 2: High School and the new characters, especially the Horsemen of which there are two confirmed: Nayuta the Control Devil and Asa/Yoru the War Devil and there is a third Horsemen who could be either the Death Devil or the Hunger/Famine Devil.

i think its just like what you said about one being from a person and the other from a company, i love shoujo and "romance" manga with a male mc and in manga it all feels so personal, so intimate between me and the author of course, a bigg battle shounen is much more apreciated in animation, but telling story is much better in manga

I love storytelling and stories, but I hate reading and writing. However, I love manga and comics. They just feel so much more direct, like I don’t have to dig three miles deep into words and descriptions to feel immersed. The author’s intent and ideas are just sitting there, waiting and pleading for you to look at them. Writing means I have to put my ideas into words, filter them and make sure message doesn’t get smeared along the way. But with manga/comics, I just gotta draw it there.

Good video! I do have a little bit of a critique and you even pointed it out at the end: You relied a little too heavy on the shortcomings of anime to prop up manga. There's so much to love about manga as a medium that is independent from anime. For instance, I love black and white artwork and I think it's a strength of manga. Anime has nothing to do with that, good or bad. Otherwise, solid points all 'round. I'm currently working on a script for a similar topic (damn near same topic, actually) so this was a nice wave of inspiration. Keep up the good work, sir

Yeah by the end of the editing I realized I was moreso complaining about anime. In retrospect, that's probably accurate as to why a lot of people switch over but it's not productive to just insult someone else's preference. Which is why I'd prob consider doing a part two in doing a better job and putting into words the things that are to appreciate about manga. I def needa work on that bc I hate it when ppl like something and downplay other things to compensate. Like ppl will say they like a certain game or series by describing it as "THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ________". Which comes off as rly toxic most of the time.

@@Ah_Lecks I mean, I certainly don't think comparative discussion/review/analysis/etc is invalid but it does tend to lead to "x is better than y" more so than why x is good on its own merits. Still, I think you summarize why a handful of people make that switch in a pretty understandable way. Most people (at least for the western fandom) are anime fans first and manga fans second, if at all. It just happens a portion of those anime fans eventually want more story-and there is nothing wrong with that. Would be curious to see a part 2!

Was just going to say that one of the main reasons you got into manga is the same as me. Perhaps it's common to many of us. We start out watching anime and get caught with cancellations or long, long breaks for the next season. We deal with that a few times and then find out that the manga is actually ongoing and way ahead. The rest is history. Just like my bank account 100's of volumes later.

Currently going through my 2nd rereading Jujutsu Kaisen, (first reread was up to where the anime left off) I got so tired of reading, so during chapter 46 I just switched to the anime and I felt the biggest relief, it felt much quicker, adaptation is good, and voice acting is well done. I HEAVILY prefer manga over anime, but the Jujutsu Kaisen manga is such a pain to read through so much I can't explain it in words, also the fights are hard to understand like what? (I hope I'm not the only one who has this problem), after I'm going to finish the anime today, I'll be worried ngl on how the manga would continue to be...

When reading a Manga you have to invest yourself in the experience, once immersed there is sound, colors, animations, because your brain creates them which makes you a part of the creation, not a simple customer, it's quite like the experience one can have reading a novel, your mind becomes that world.

I've mainly enjoyed anime more because most of the anime that I've really enjoyed have been getting consistently great adaptations, like kaguya-sama and mushoku tensei, but if the anime doesn't deliver like with MHA then I'm more than ready to switch to reading the Manga. Also Sometimes I do both because while I may enjoy the anime more, the large gap between seasons can lead me to read ahead or just read the Manga in the meantime. I just decided to start reading ahead in Kaguya-sama and have loved every second of it, yet I'm still excited for season 4! So ig I like both but prefer a really good anime adaptation than the Manga if it's available

I think what really made me watch anime was the monogatari series, that series had just the right amount of insanity, degeneracy and so many other things that people have come to love a bout that show. Oh, and shaft is god tier with its animation, also the dialogue is superb, I don't think ill ever watch a series again that has dialogue of this caliber its amazing.

while i do understand the benefit of "Going at your own pace" with the manga. many times if the art or paneling is not super great one could just read through the dialogue like a book and skim over the artwork. now i present someone who explained this much better than me. MyAnimeList user SingleH : "Well, I’m actually not sure, but if I had to guess, it would probably be because I don’t know how to read manga. When Made in Abyss first came out in 2017, I was absolutely dazzled, and when it ended, I felt empty. Crumbling under the weight of unbearable longing and impatience, I said fuck it and started reading the manga, and that was such a huge mistake. It was good-don’t get me wrong-but it was not the same for many reasons. Firstly and most obviously is the fact that the majority of what made that show so deeply special to me were aspects of it which could only exist in an anime format. Aspects including but not limited to the music, the colors, the voice acting, and most importantly, the directing. People who prefer manga over anime will often say the reason they like manga better is because “they decide how fast it goes.” They like that they can just pick it up whenever they want, read it at whatever pace they want, and put it down whenever they want, and while I definitely see the appeal of this, I personally could not disagree more. I agree that most seasonal soup is not particularly well-directed or well-paced, but most anime fans don’t even appreciate good direction or good pacing wherever it does actually exist, and whenever you come across anime that do have these qualities, the resulting experience is in my opinion far more engaging than any self-dictated session of manga reading could ever be. When you watch something written and directed my true masters and artists, you feel like you’re watching something truly masterful and artistic. You feel no needed to turn up the playback speed, check the time, or modify the viewing experience in any way, because what you’re watching is already perfect the way its being executed and the way its being paced. Maybe this level of immersion is possible with manga as well, but if it is possible, I personally have never experienced it. I don’t read much manga, so I’m not very well-practiced in the art of doing so. When I read Made in Abyss, I found it impossible to figure a good balance between reading the text and looking at the artwork. Indeed, I’m sure there were many pages where I didn’t even look at the images at all and just read through it like a book with nothing but dialogue. I was so invested in the story and characters thanks to the anime which I had originally fallen in love with that this obsessive interest in seeing what happened next made it so I couldn’t appreciate the manga properly. There was no director or screenwriter forcing me to focus on certain shots for certain amounts of time, thereby forcing me to appreciate everything as intended. There was no musician cluing me into the emotional tone of the scene, and instead just the quiet hum of my air conditioning turning on and off in the background. There was no art director making things pop, thus guiding my attention where it needed to go visually, and instead just vaguely paneled, monochrome images for me to glance over as I pleased. Again, this is one of the things manga readers say they like about manga-this control they have over the experience-but I don’t want this control, because when I have the control, I risk warping the experience. Case in point: Made in Abyss, the unequivocal creative masterpiece, was warped into something I found to be frigid and emotionless thanks to my tendency to read too quickly" this was from their Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. 2nd Season review on myanimelist

An Anime Adaptation is confined by the translation of mediums. Chainsaw Man is going to have a lot of that. Panel use is pretty good in chainsaw man, but you would never know how important that is to the experience if you only watched the Anime. There are a lot of instances of that. Be it beautifully hand drawn scenes, Creative Panel use, entire chapters that don't get adapted for the sake of fitting the story into the season, or scenes of intense violence or other serious themes that have to be censored or never adapted at all due to the restrictions of the Anime Medium. Goodnight PunPun was used in the video as an example, but on the surface, just by the cover, you would never understand why. Not only does its general style and vibe not really translate to a video medium, but it's also extremely bleak, and dark is some pretty realistic but uncomfortable ways. The method of which the author uses a fairly realistic artstyle contrasted by the mascot like depiction of Punpun, plus the gradual visual changes punpun goes though, and many other panel choices along the way, they just don't translate to an Anime. But its not just "this is visually too complex to translate" there is also "there is too much" or "we need to cut corners". Early in Golden Kamuy, Bears are reoccurring. In the Anime, the bears in the first 2 seasons are HEAVY CG. The bears in golden Kamuy are fairly detailed, which in the manga, doesnt contrast the characters that much. In the anime, the CG contrasts stylistically extemely hard, to the point where I really think it detracts from the anime. Later in the series, this goes away as they find the time or budget or whatever to actually hand draw the bears. None of this is to say an anime adaptation is always worse. I would strongly argue that dragon maids, the anime, is significantly better than dragon maids, the manga, because the animators are drawing closer to the current style of the series, compared to the fairly rough are style of the early manga. Or Nichijou, which uses its animation extremely well to amplify the gags, and restructure the story to work in a different, but ultimate more interesting way. The start of the Nichijou Manga is Nano going to school for the first time, but the anime builds up to that instead, giving it more significance. Idaten Deities adaptation takes some liberties with the visual style, using its color scheme to make the series appear more cartoony, which works well to contrast the direction of the series as things go on. There are plenty of adaptations that are just better, as well as adaptations that arent better or worse, but basically 1 to 1 recreations (like To Your Eternity). But in some cases, the manga is just better, and you should read it. Don't just not read it because ">reading manga" or something like that. Its a really good medium. Also Read Tokedase Mizore-chan, it deserves more appreciation.

I get the feeling of a lack of personalization. I started off watching anime and never really touching manga cause I liked listening to the different voices and the music which brought scenes to life. Eventually, I became an avid reader of Webtoons which sort of broadened my horizons since the website hosted both Asian and non-Asian authors and works. It was all well and good and I found many serious I liked like Tower of God, Lookism, Weak Hero and Eleceed. All of which I loved to death and could binge-read quite easily. However, eventually, it morphed into something else, they began pumping out 7-8 new series and I struggled to follow along and maintain interest. The entire process of producing and putting out webtoons became industrialised causing true works of art, things are written from a person's soul to be forgotten and buried under 10 different variations I became the duke's something and we fell in love. You literally had masterpieces like Eyes or Ember Knights pushed under the rug only to have Lore Olympus shoved down your throat for the fifth time in a week. Eventually, I gave up on webtoons entirely because they began to fail in quality too, making anything that was even a little popular an original. This lead me to try out the manga, I was hesitant at first cause I got used to the scroll style of webtoons and full-colour panels but honestly. I feel like starting manga brought back my love for illustrated stories again. I enjoyed everything I picked up because s you said, it felt very intimate as if I was witnessing the story from the eyes of the author. The emotion and hard work shone through the art and I was able to actually read something again after a really long time of backing out of stuff cause reading felt like a chore. Manga helped me get into reading again and inspired me to deepen my writing. Bungou Stray Dogs and Vanitas no Carte hold a special place in my heart because their authors gave me my writing awakening. It was a magical feeling to fall into a world that seemed so endless as if it really did exist on the other end of the page. I finally felt as if the story mattered, the characters mattered, and they weren't just props to be thrown around to produce an 'exciting' show, they had a story to tell and it would be told. Anyways, Imma stop now- This has gotten too long. I just wanted to say, I really enjoy your videos and I hope you keep enjoying making them. I discovered some really good mangas because of this channel!
