In this deep dive, I delve into a complex story of copyright, fair use, and the thin line between content creation and content theft. The saga begins with a controversial video upload that sparked a fierce debate about the rights of documentary filmmakers versus the freedom of content creators on KZbin. This isn't just a story about legal battles; it's a tale woven with misunderstanding, harassment, and the harsh reality of social media dynamics.
I also explore the personal conflicts and public fallout resulting from the incident, highlighting the challenges faced by smaller creators in defending their work against larger influencers. The video not only sheds light on the specific case involving a known figure and a documentary called "Honeypot" but also prompts a broader discussion on the ethics of content creation and the responsibilities that come with influence.
Lastly, this narrative isn't just mine-it reflects a larger conversation within our community about respect, creativity, and the need to protect original work while fostering an environment where free expression can thrive. Through this analysis, I aim to provide clarity, offer perspectives, and encourage a healthy dialogue among viewers, creators, and critics alike.

Honestly Matto, the "Copying an essay and adding your thoughts after each paragraph" is one of your better React analogies, just because most people are aware of how obviously disallowed it is. Not sure if I've seen you use it before, but if you do return to the Anti-React business, it might be one to have more front-and-centre - I like the slot-machine analogy for the market as a whole, but it's a good supporting analogy for the individual works as I see a lot of people claim "added value" as a defence.
@lachychops2
@lachychops2 2 ай бұрын
I still think the best analogy is to ask that they 'react' to a movie or tv show in the same way they do a YT video. Is that legal? Would you expect that to stay on YT? If so, why? If not, why not?

i also really liked this analogy. it mostly made me think "in school you are using other people's work in your essays because you are LEARNING, when you finally get into the industry you studied for you don't have that luxury, you need to produce the material that you need and other students will eventually use in the future. that's a big part of it there. in school, you use that work because you aren't supposed to have full knowledge of the topic. essays are not only a way for instructors to determine your writing competency, but it's also an effective way for you to gain a lot of knowledge by researching. with theo, he just seems to know everything (though more often than not it doesn't really seem to end up that way, but i don't watch him), but instead of creating content that would be "used in the essays" and adding something valuable to the field like she should be, he just does the "writing the essay" part, and very lazily like matto explains. it kinda gets infuriating to think he gets PAID to do that, especially while there's plenty of talented programmers being put on the back burner because of it like many people mentioned. as someone who returned to college for a programming degree, i would much rather be recommended a video with 20 views that actually helps me learn something rather than one of theo's videos i think this situation like doing unpaid training for a job (entry level would be the best example). yes, you are still TECHNICALLY working, however when 90% of the job is being done by the person training you in order to teach you how things need to be completed, you can't exactly claim that all that work is your own and get paid for it. maybe i'm wrong but i feel like if the entire world worked like that then you would eventually have nothing but a world of mediocre surgeons etc. that are only there to get paid during their training. they wouldn't care to put in the work and get good at what they do, cause why would they if they can get paid all the same to just watch someone better do their job for them

@deathtrap5556 2 ай бұрын
I mean there is a whole section of "essays" called literature reviews. Which look at research papers and other essays and basically look at what has and hasn't been researched. So while the analogy makes sense, there is a specific category for such "react" content in my opinion. Which if you ask me, in my opinion is also low effort, but it does actively take place.

Must be a case of malignant narcissism, very little else can explain Theo's behaviour. Remember, the very worst thing in the whole universe for a malignant narcissist is to feel "unfairly" attacked. Anything negative against them, no matter how objectively valid, is seen as a huge personal insult and an attack on their very being. Only thing you can do is to ignore such people, for they are legitimately and chronically mentally unable to see their own faults. It's as futile as trying to convince a person w/o eyes who somehow believes they can see, that no, you can't because you know... no eyes. They will never be able to see your point, pun intended.

Dude who spent "3x the original video's length" (super transformative!!!!) not understanding anything and calling Matt autistic wasn't going to shit out anything worthwhile. Barely worth an acknowledgement. The same goes for other react defenders who either cannot understand or cannot argue Matt's position, so they stoop to disingenous, false narratives or name-calling. Can you imagine a scholarly paper that makes an argument like this? Theo is an exemplar of "Schrodinger's Victim: Claim he is a victim and at the same time assert that you are powerless and pathetic." The "victim" will use whichever suits him best in the moment. He's a compulsive and pathological liar who lives in denial and is massively egotistical and a narcissist (which is a hell of a combination). He wants to make you a villain so badly to play the victim to gain sympathy but his ego prevents him from doing that so he has to constantly also put you down. He's literally a walking contradiction. And it doesn't matter how many times you tell him what the truth is, he will delude himself into making other excuses because its far easier for him to lie to himself than to face reality that he is not a good person and he made mistakes. His ego will never let him do that.

Matto bringing to light the absurdity of react content is a catalyst that works to accelerate the ending of react content, and is therefore costing futur benefits to those bad actors whose abuse will be cut short for them, and could no longer further exploit reacting. I think that's why he get's the hate he does. I appreciate matto's react content series, i have grown to always seek the original video if a title is intresting to me( reactors often just copy the original video's title, further proving their laziness ), even if i get recommended a reaction of that video, both to get the *very often* short version of the content, and to form my own criticisms on the content and not be spoon-fed opinions. Matto, i wish your community's appreciation for your fight is enough of a reward, even though it might at times seem to you that you're fighting a losing fight.

Content like this is why I was for keeping stuff on rambles. It'd be much harder for people to claim you are coming at them with an army when you could quote tweet a screenshot of the video on the rambles channel with 100k~ subs. I dont follow youtube analytics to the degree that id understand if this type of content would recommended the channel more or less like some people are claiming. Just happy to see it recommended to me.

As another web developer, my opinion about Theo and his ego, is that it seems to be as you, says. Theo in many cases talks about things he doesn´t know, technologies he haven´t even learned, for example Rust (the programming language) and keeps its mind very closed to different points of view when it comes to tools related to productivity, like code editors for example where instead of trying to understand the point of those different tools, needs and workflows, he instead compares them with his own needs and workflows and only because they don't work for him he just concludes it doesn't work, which makes sense if you have such a big ego to think your needs are the only ones. So well, that's what I think about him.

It's again and again impressive to me how many deranged people there are on the internet, and that are famous too. Makes me wonder if the internet encourages antisocial behavior in people due to it being so impersonal and relatively consequence-free. If we were living in like 1000 BC or in tribes and caves, would there still be so many people like this who are eager to exploit others without second thought and badmouth people who voice criticism over it? I like to imagine, if Theo lived in ancient Greece or something, the people would have simply held a vote to banish him lmao

I have a hypothesis that the rise of reality TV stardom and "influencer" as a career might be why there seem to be fewer infamous serial killers today compared to, say, the 1970s. That itch, that desire for notoriety, can now be satisfied by views instead of murders.

This is just a side note for a different topic: If Matto ever will debate with someone live, like in a former video he released suggests he might, Matto should pull an Eminem and start the whole debate with mentioning how as a small creator he did gambling, there was a mention about how grape and reactors are similar, how he can make "unhinged" faces while explaining the same thing for the 5th year now, how he does own/has money for shirts, how Charlie agreed on what Matto said was true about reactors, how there are cougars in missions, how it was 14 pages!!!! and etc. and once he would be done with his Eminem move, any debate would be shortened down to about 20 minutes of Matto (probably) destroying whoever he debates.

Anything with "aaS" means as a Servuce, For example "SaaS" is Storage as a Service, and in the case of "PaaS" mentioned in this video, it is Platform as a Service, which is usually what you call a complete eco system delivered to a company Maybe not the best explenation, but basically you're delivering a IT solution to a company, so they don't host their own servers etc.

Coming from the tech side, assuming a lot of people here aren't from that space - Theo is clearly a skilled programmer and entrepreneur but a lot of his opinions on tech are very narrow and sometimes wrong or unsubstantiated. He does a lot of opinion pieces about trends in the development space, but frequently misrepresents points different from his. He also mainly just follows broad trends and parrots the most popular opinions - he has at a few times delayed sharing his opinion about a thing until it was clear what the community's opinion on that thing was. I don't wanna say he doesn't know what he's talking about, because he definitely does, he's running a successful business, I would say he often talks about way more than what he knows. I just thought this is relevant to the point about him having a massive ego. I don't have examples of the top of my head and they'd be technical but it wouldnt be hard to find them. Also for tech people who follow Theo and wanna find someone better, check out Primeagen, also does react content, but mainly to articles, not videos Edit: Realized you had bits from developers in the video - I disagree strongly with the guy who says he does a good job reviewing up and coming tech. Theo is so closed-minded and narrow in his opinions and so happy to jump on trends his takes are usually awful. He's good at keeping up to date with everything that's being released, but that's not hard, especially if you don't do much research before you speak to a camera about it.

Theo seems mid-level and a little too much in to "use the new shiny" mindset over the "use stable stuff" to really be all that good of a resource a lot of the time. Then again I prefer to run a year or two behind the curve, especially in the mess of the JS world, so maybe that's more just how I view the JS Dev world overall than Theo specifically.

When Theo and Prime started doing this type of content, the blogs and articles they reacted to were genuinely about interesting things I was happy to watch in video format, especially with ThePrimeagen as he always has some useful insight as he is an incredible engineer and always credits the author. I felt like it was a good thing, because they brought attention to interesting topics to a wider audience. However in my opinion this has now turned into very low effort content, where the posts/blogs are mediocre and sometimes just lie about things and the reaction itself doesn't provide anything of value. It feels like reacting for the sake of reacting as it's the type of content they got successful with. There are exceptions to this, but I feel this way about most of the stuff they're doing nowadays. I read a lot of programming related content, be it things like subreddits, twitter, hackernews, lobsters, medium blogs, bootdev, as well as watch a lot of content creators in this space and I'm honestly tired of this trend where people just react to something on stream with barely any value added (most of the time, ThePrimeagen being a notable exception). I switched from the gamer-type content to a more educational content in a field I was interested in exactly because I was tired of just effortless reactions and the educational space felt like it had a lot of well thought out videos and also felt novel and maybe some backlash will make them move in a better direction again but right now it just feels like shit and it's discouraging.
