Former Curator of Collections and Interiors at Kenwood, Ranger’s House and Chiswick House, Tessa Kilgarriff gives an online talk on ‘The Self-portraiture of Joshua Reynolds’. Reynolds’ self-portrait (c.1788) is part of the great art collection at Kenwood House, London.
Kenwood is home to one of the greatest collections of works by Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792) in the world. Reynolds’ self-portrait is an autograph version of the prime picture that is held by the Royal Collection. Kenwood’s version hangs above Rembrandt’s famous self-portrait in the Dining Room. In her talk, Tessa Kilgarriff details Reynolds’ inspiration for his self-portraits and contextualises his experimentation with self-portraiture during his long career as 18th century Britain’s foremost painter.
Introduction and fade out music: Cornet Piece c.1751 by Charles Burney (1726 - 1814). Joshua Reynolds painted his friend Dr Charles Burney as one of the ‘Streatham Worthies’ and that portrait is now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. The music you can hear was recorded and played on the 18th century organ at Kenwood House by the celebrated organist, the late Jennifer Bate, who was a Life Member of the Friends of Kenwood.
