DISCLAIMER: Before everyone loses their minds about the double-headed eagle and writes “this is Albanian/Byzantine/Serbian whatever, read this article: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-headed_eagle This symbol has been used across many cultures and dates back to the Bronze Age in the Near East and this version was the Seljuk emblem so chill love you bye You can buy this track and more of my music here: faryafaraji.bandcamp.com/track/the-seljuks Music and vocals by Farya Faraji, part of the lyrics by Omar Khayyam. With this track, I was inspired to make a fusion of Turkish and Iranian musical traditions to represent the Seljuk Empire of the Middle-Ages: a Turko-Persian state founded by Oghuz Turks, which used Persian language and culture as its foundational elements, and ruled over large swaths of the Middle-East, namely over Iran and Anatolia. Please keep in mind that though many aspects of this song are applicable to the era, this is a fusion of modern Turkish and Iranian music and by no means meant to be a historical recreation from the era. The musical element is centered around the music of Sufi mystics: Muslims who utilise music as a means of expression to be closer to God through the use of Zikr; ritualistic musical ceremonies where they enter a feeling of trance. Drums such as the daf and bendhir, used here, will provide a strong percussion element, often accompanied by rhythmic breaths and phrases of religious nature. This focus on Sufism is due to the strong tendency towards Sufism present within the Seljuk dynasty and Turko-Persian tradition. The instruments are the Turkish bağlama, an Iranian dotar from the south of Khorasan, and the ney, a flute commonly used by Sufi orders for their rituals, as well as an Iranian santour. The lyrics are in Early Modern Persian and in Old Anatolian Turkish, the variety of Turkic that was growing out of Common Oghuz Turkic at the time to develop into the Turkish language of today. The Persian lyrics are a quatrain by the revered Persian poet Omar Khayyam, who lived in Iran during the rule of the Seljuk Empire-the lyrics are thus contemporary to the era. Persian lyrics: مرغی دیدم نشسته بر باره طوس در پیش نهاده کله کیکاووس با کله همی گفت که افسوس افسوس کو بانگ جرسها و کجا ناله کوس Morghi didam neshaste bar bāreye Tus, Dar pish nahāde kalleye Kay Kāvus, Ba kalle hami goft: avsoos, avsoos! Koo bānge jarass-hā va kojā nāleye koos? I saw a bird perched on the walls of Tus, Before him lay the skull of Kay Kavus, And thus he spoke: “alas! alas!” Thy drums are hushed, thy larums have rung truce The reason I chose this specific quatrain, other than being contemporary to the Seljuk era, is that it speaks of the long gone era of pre-Islamic Iran. Ancient Iran and the mythological days of the Kayanian dynasty are gone, and the land has entered the Middle-Ages, where Islam and Turkic presence will now play a significant role, and in return, contribute to the spread and cultural hegemony of the Persian language and the Persianate states. Old Anatolian Turkish lyrics: Ve cāhil gişileri gişi sanma, Ve hünersüzleri bilür sayma. And do not consider the ignorant ones as real men, and do not consider the untalented ones knowledgeable ones. I chose this line, other than being contemporary for the time, because it illustrates the general attitude of the Seljuks in my opinion; a once nomadic people who recognised the sophistication of the culture they were integrating into, and made it into their priority to cultivate scientific, literary and cultural advancements.

The history of Anatolia fascinates me ever since I was young (during that time I was reading many books about Ancient Egyptian history) because of the encounters between civilizations throughout history (especially the relationships between Ancient Egyptians and the Hittites) and the cultural crossroad between the so called East vs West. When many Turkic ethnic groups came to Anatolia in the 11th century and the 12th century (although there were definite contacts between Eastern Roman empire and the Gökturk empire during wars with the Sassanians in late antiquity and early middle ages), they brought some aspects of long lasting Northeastern Iranian and Chinese (especially from other East Asian cultures near Central Asia) cultural influences into the Middle East. Even when Slavic ethnic groups and Turkic ethnic groups had battled against each other in parts of northeastern Europe, there were many friendships and mutual agreements between each other (although not in northeastern Europe, the Turkic Bulgars intermingled and traded with Slavic ethnic groups even before their conversion to Greek Orthodox Christianity) and they sometimes assimilated each other at various times.

@@Defence69104 U sure about that? Then why did local turkic khans of modern day Azerbaijan refused to be part of Qajar Iran and some of them even preferred Russians? Text is from Wikipedia about the Karabakh Khanate. In the summer of 1795, Shusha was besieged by Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar, son of Mohammad Hasan Khan, who attacked Shusha in 1752. Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar's goal was to end the feudal fragmentation and restore the old Safavid imperial domain. For this purpose, he also wanted to proclaim himself shah (king) of Iran. However, according to Safavid tradition, the shah had to control the South Caucasus and southern Dagestan before his coronation. Therefore, the Karabakh Khanate and its fortified capital Shusha were the first and major obstacle to achieve these ends. Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar besieged Shusha with his 80,000-strong army. Ibrahim Khalil Khan mobilized the population for long-term defense. The a militia 15,000 was assembled in Shusha, where women fought alongside men. The Armenian population of Karabakh also actively participated in this struggle against the invaders and fought side by side with the Muslim population, jointly organizing ambushes in the mountains and forests. The siege lasted for 33 days. Not being able to capture Shusha, Agha Mohammad Khan ceased the siege and advanced to Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi), which, despite desperate resistance, was occupied and exposed to unprecedented destruction, with many thousands of its inhabitants carried off to mainland Iran.

you trying to find a solution to your identity crisis by making a salad that mixing the names like avşar, iranian and fars. But it doesn't work bro. The Avşars are one of the 24 tribes of the Oghuzs, such as the Kınık tribe who founded the Seljuk Empire, the Kayı tribe who founded the Ottoman Empire or Beğdili tribe who founded the Harzemshahs and the Khazar State. I mean, you can't be from Avşar tribe of Turks and at the same time Persian. Being Persian, being Iranian and being from Iran are different things. For example, Kurds are Iranian but not Persian.
