One of the interesting things I've read about in history leading up to World War I was the way Otto von Bismarck made alliances. If there was a conflict, he would often side with the weaker one so that they would owe him a favor. The crazy network of alliances helped him unite Germany and afterwards he spent time trying to isolate France and Russia to keep the peace. The Congress of Berlin was led by Bismarck trying to prevent a war in the Balkans when Brittain and Austria-Hungary were upset with Russian influence in Bulgaria and elsewhere after the Balkan wars. He also signed a Reinsurance Treaty promising Germany would remain neutral if Austria-Hungary attacked Russia if Russia remained neutral if France attacked Germany.

Fun Fact before the Triple Entente, there was the Mediterranean Entente between Austria, GB and Italy that lasted until around 1900. Also the USA and Germany were the only countries that actually stopped fighting in 1918, every other country fought on in some way. Japan invaded Russia; Russia fought their civil war; France, Gb and their Dominions fought the Communists, Turkey fought Greece and their Entente support, Hungary was fighting Czechoslovakia and Romania, Austria was fighting Hungary and Yugoslavia and Poland was fighting the new Soviet Union. You can say WW1 only ended in 1923, when the last members of the Central Powers(Turkey) made peace with the Entente with the treaty of Lausanne.
