i think the silhouette of the puff dress is a bit anti-fashion, hence the appeal. the mindset that it's ok to wear stuff that's not "flattering" is an upcoming phenomenon in reaction to the ever-changing body ideals forced down women's throats. the garment becomes the statement form rather than adhering to the body as form and i love that escapism.

I agree with the notion it's anti-fashion; in the same vein 1920s women's fashion has a sort of "nod and a wink" with it's frumpy look; along with Regency and 1960s Twiggy. As much as people like clothing to flatter them, I think there are times where people want to make a statement by wearing something not complimentary. The Selkie cuts to me sort of look like the embodiment of an impulse buy made into a garment; that feeling when you are shopping for a prom dress or a wedding gown actualized into a physical garment unto itself. There's a heavy air of "I want to explode out of normality in the most disney-princess way!" and I say that as a fan of the trend. It's sort of how Japanese Lolita fashion started; as reaction to the harsh expectations of what growing up means and being responsible/humble. Teenage girls and young woman already in the punk/visual kei scene started showing up to concerts in outfits often directly copied off of porcelain doll dresses. People were alienated by how "childish" or materialistic the outfits seemed and it grew in popularity as a "devil may care/let them eat cake" kinda thing. Now it's settled (Lolita fashion is 30+ years old!) into it's own sub-culture (like punk or goth) that self-references and borrows from current trends, but it still generates a strong anti-fashion vibe/response depending on the setting.

I think the puff dress makes you look wider. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but some people might not appreciate the affect. If you’re shorter, for example, you have less length to balance out the width.

I've definitely noticed a body type that the puff dresses look best on and, well.....it's not mine. But, I love their prints so much that it keeps me coming back 😅

The trick is to not touch your stomach so much wearing puff dress because it will make you look pregnant. I own 2 puff dresses.

Thanks for the comparison! I just bought a Selkie dress and am waiting for it to arrive so this was really helpful! But with the sizes, it’s because the dresses are manufactured in China and this is probably based on Asian sizes. Most Asian girls weigh less than 110 pounds and are shorter, just for reference!

You're probably right about the sizing. Ever since they changed the size chart last year, I've been way happier with the fit of these dresses. Congrats on getting your first Selkie, I hope you love it!

I really enjoy the waist on the puff. I look so fat in anything that isn't empire or babydoll waisted since I carry most of my weight in my mid, have no hips, and am a bit bustier. My problem is that it's too short and I can't wear it because my front and back are flashing. Yay tall torso.

After making this video I saw a lot of real life people in the puffs and there certainly are body types and heights that absolutely rock this style. I still don't love it on me unless it's the longer french puff style. I'll leave the link to a couple of posts on my blog where I took the cottage puffs and added a ruffle to the bottom and now I love them! bleu-avenue.blogspot.com/2023/10/sewing-alterations-selkie-coat-of.html bleu-avenue.blogspot.com/2023/09/puff-possibilities-much-longer-mucha.html

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The empire waist is MAGIC! The length is the thing that could be a smidge longer

😂 Are you a Bridgeton fan? It's just empire waists as far as the eye can see on that show.

@@bleuavenue I love period costumes but that's not why - I'm busty with a small waist and would look like Dolly Parton if Selkie went waist-conscious :) Whereas the empire waist and short skirts - although the puffs are slightly TOO short - look fabulous!

What resalers to you recommend looking for a selkie or teuta matoshi dress? I haven’t been able to find any and I can’t afford a new one😂

There's always Ebay, but I usually use Poshmark. It's harder to find a huge bargain on there, but I save an average of $100 on Selkies, but the site is very safe from scams (Always get ask for photos of the brand label though, there are so many spot-on dupes it's getting easier to pass them off as the real deal). Matoshi's are much harder to find anywhere, but there are some a handful on Posh. Depop and Mercari often have Selkies, but I've only bought one thing off each of those sites, and have heard quite a few complaints about scams, so use them cautiously. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions

I'm really coming around on this style. I hated it at first, on everyone. But, after a while, I started to really like it when I would see it styled out there in the real world on shorter curvier body types. And now I'm seeing more and more people of all body types that are really making this style look amazing.

What size did you end up getting? I got confused if the one you’re wearing is xxs or xs
@bleuavenue
@bleuavenue 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard they're modifying the size chart for the Spring release in March so it may not always be this way, but for the Head in the Clouds Ritz I got XXS and it fit but is tight. So far my experience with Selkies is that for organza dresses I need XS and for cotton dresses I need XXS. Let me know if you have any other questions :D
