Well, Gasly and Albon were both still really inexperienced and have shown that they definitely had room to improve. Checo could at most get back to where he used to be. Edit: I actually also understand why they did it from their side. Albon was showing very similar levels to what Gasly did before going to Red Bull, the swap was free and had no risk to it. Then when Albon struggled they could get their hands on a driver who had always been a safe pair of hands showing he should be able to do well enough for a number 2.

Frankly, both he AND Ricciardo still being there is because of Horner. To my knowledge, Sergio didn't invest in Red Bull. The only big people in control are the Thai owners (who are on Christian's side in the whole power stuggle) and Red Bull Gmbh (Marko's side) and Perez has no involvement there. He still has that seat because he brings massive backing AND he's marketable in the Latin American Market (which extends to Formula 1 as a whole, which makes sacking him a very risky choice considering the Mexican Grand Prix is a massive sellout event). @kohikappu6 ай бұрын
No, it's not. Checo was the only right choice at that right time, but only in 2021. In 2022, they should've gone for Gasly again though. I think he was given too short of a preparation when he jumped into that Red Bull in 2019. Yes, Ricciardo left the team but that doesn't make Gasly's 2019 season was a proof he had earned this seat and could've gone for someone else, a solid driver with experience like Raikkonen, for instance.

It's not cursed. Gasly and Albon were decent. It's just that their cars weren't dominant, so their results didn't always look very good. Perez has had a dominant or at least very fast car for three years and has been 25% horrible, 50% mediocre, and just 20% acceptable. Albon in that car would rarely miss Q3 and would score many podiums, along with a few wins.

Besides they don't need Checo for that. Red Bull wasn't worse in 2014, Merc just got it right. Only 35 drivers in F1 history have 10 or more wins. 67 podiums places Bottas 10th overall in the all-time podium list. Most poles without ever being champion? Leclerc with 24 poles. 6 wins to his name. Bottas comes 2nd on his list with 20 poles. 10 wins. Arnoux had 18 poles and 7 wins. Well, Bottas did better than both Leclerc and Arnoux. 3 poles makes Perez a lousy qualifier. The fact he needed a record 216 qualifying sessions before his first pole validates this claim - especially since Perez needed 65(!) more races to achieve this than the second worst on this list. Stroll(!) scored a pole before Perez did while they both were at Racing Point. Bottas led the world championship standings for 5 races in total. Leclerc did too. 5 races. So did Arnoux. 3 races. And Mark Webber. 6 races. David Coulthard led for 3 races. Massa for 2 races. Even Robert frickin' Kubica led the title race for 1 race. But Perez never did and very likely never will. Red Bull since Max joined is such a conundrum. Pretty much every team-mate has proven to be a fast driver, but actually driving that RB car just makes them look like clowns. I think maybe they have just settled with Checo knowing that they have created a car that is more or less undrivable (consistently) unless your name is Max.

The problem with red bulls second drivers has been that almost no one can deal with a truly fast car, which has proven for decades to be one with an exceedingly pointy front end. Albon made that clear in his interview.

I think the problem isn't keeping Checo but the trend of politics, more power to Horner and losing talent because of it. The team culture is losing its focus on winning and excellence. Horner complaining about a "demanding" verstapping is a big red flag for me. Checo is a symbol of the wrong culture that starts to develop at red bull. And as a non elite drive he is getting old too. I would rather take the risk on a young driver thats bad but developing than a old guy thats bad for 2 years.

10:40 that’s why they need a driver that’s has at least two of these requirements: young, consistent, and out of the team that Red Bull could convince to race for their team SOON (Carlos Sainz, maybe Lando or Fernando, Charles, definitely Yuki, probs Nico if sauber isn’t going to to good for him, and maybe George Russel if he does a turnaround). Just an idea for Red Bull since the driver has to stay their for a good amount of time, do good results (with a curse from in team drivers not putting in good, consistent points) and just someone that might give them quite a bit of money in a marketing perspective since that’s what they’re doing with Checo.
@KarenWheeler-qr1nf7 ай бұрын
Edit (I’m actually not sure if this counts as an edit but whatevs): Yuki, Liam, and maybe the honey badger (Riccardo that I’m kinda biased on) could break the curse of in team drivers doing bad for the Red Bull team.

The problem that I see here is being Max's teammate is how did Checo put it to Christian? "Its quite a bit of a Mind F**k being Max's teammate." Think about pushing as hard as you can and you end up .3 to .5 secs off his pace in the same car. You push harder and screw up! It breaks you as a man because to be in F1 you have to have the mentality you are the best! You put someone else in that seat annnnnd it happens again and breaks that driver too. Checo needs to just do Checo and remember we love him❤

There's isn't much for Red Bull to do, between Gasly, Albon, Perez, there is a common theme. Max can get the car to do whatever HE wants, but the team mate cannot. The car has to be built with Max's driving style in mind above the team mate.
@iwatchmostlymathvideos7 ай бұрын
thats literally not true lol. as much as u might want it to
@zibingotaeam37167 ай бұрын
or max is just that much better at driving the car, while the RB is actually incredibly mid compared to other cars. Perez has had some good drives in it, but the same goes for all the other cars he's driven that were not top shelf material. All of max' teammates were struggling because of the mixture of pressure to keep up with max while also dealing with the problems of the car - due to it being known to not do well on low speed corners and tracks, I'd wager that there is a very difficult to predict dropoff in grip below certain speeds that Max is just dialled in on, while the others struggle.
@kristoffer30007 ай бұрын
The car isn't built with any driver in mind, it's built with speed in mind, anything else would make it slower.
@wingracer16147 ай бұрын
@@kristoffer3000 This is true however there are things you can do to make the car theoretically faster but that make it difficult to drive and thus slower unless you have a driver that can master it such as The Michael or Max.

I think that Max and Checo situation it’s a great lab for us to see how it’s not only the car that makes the difference. I usually hear and read people saying that the car makes the driver, but honestly, this is perfect exemple of the opposite.
@EstellammaSS7 ай бұрын
There are a million reasons, but the main one will always be Christian Horner. Ever since the Horndog incident he’s just in full damage limitation mode and anything that could be inferred as a bad decision for him like a bad driver swap, is just straight off the table. Horner wants to consolidate his position and the share holders wouldn’t care as long as Max keeps winning.

6:26 the reason why he managed to hold on to 2nd place was that there was no clear runner-up team. Everybody else was taking points from each other. First it was AM, then Ferrari, Then Mercedes started to take some podiums, then McLaren appeared out of nowhere... That's why Checo managed to keep 2nd. He got big points early in the season and then everybody else was too busy fighting each other.
@meikgeik7 ай бұрын
I'm genuinely convinced that Red Bull has a majorly toxic culture. Something about that team just ruins drivers. I think they need to hire a sports therapist, because what ever is going on with Checo really feels like it's psychological. Perhaps racial slurs being hurled around by superiors? Constant insults and comparisons to Max who was essentially a victim of child abuse/child slavery to turn him into the ultimate driver and is not a fair comparison to ANYONE. A company culture where certain people can do literally anything they want with no consequences? Yeah... WhO kNoWs WhY ChEcO sUcKs?! I mean if I hated the team I was with, but they were paying me to put on a happy face to keep sponsors... I'd do exactly what Checo is doing.

The word you're looking for is consistency. Thing is, every driver on the grid -apart from maybe Logan Sargeant- has at least one race they can brag about, that they got the most out of or even outperformed the car. But when you're looking at drivers who can do that every race, or even more often than not, suddenly the list becomes a lot shorter. Sainz is a tempting suggestion, but he does also struggle with consistency in the same way Perez does.
