The idea that serial Killers would fly into a blind rage and start giving out random clues to who they are if we started insulting them is weird. Yeah insult them but most of them have probably been called 1000000x worse by their victims. I really don't think it would bother the majority of them if killing people doesn't bother them.

Your point about not naming murderers cool names is actually 100% valid and idk why we don't stop naming them, or give them a super ridiculous name. It's not really for cool name purposes, rather to give us an easy way to identify them, and give a small brief explanation with one word relating to what they did, while I do agree with concensus of serial killers having cool names being bad, there's only so much we can call a serial killer "stupid baby man," though some of those serial killers names are actually too cool then they deserve, maybe tone down the coolness, but keep it high enough so they're not gonna be "stupid baby man," because everyone's gonna think they just had a tantrum or something

I remember how shocked everyone was when Gary ridgeway was caught. It was all over tv, he had interviews on 48 hours and other prime time news programs. He was this soft spoken little man, looked harmless, seemed actually kind, and then to find out this guy who seemed very well adjusted was a massive serial killer and a necrophiliac, BOOM! Just blew everyone’s minds back in 2005. The craziest thing about it was that BTK was arrested and charged shortly before Gary ridgeway. They both were going through the legal process at the same time. These two infamous serial killers that were infamously known nationwide before they were caught and thought to be the last major unknown serial killers by the nation at that time. Of course we know better now. Still. The reaction then vs now is just mind blowing.

21:35 Another interesting Ed Kemper fact: He fled the scene of his last murder, drove over a 1000 miles non-stop (while high on caffeine pills) in order to get away from what he assumed was an active manhunt. When he finally stopped, and realized that he still hadn't been identified as a suspect, he ended up calling the police from a phone booth in order to confess to everything. In his first phone call, the police basically told him to fuck off, so he had to try again and ask to specifically be put through to a policeman he knew personally in order to finally get the police to come arrest him.

It’s kinda humorous in a sense that he wouldn’t have been caught if not for the fact he turned himself in. Also the fact the police didn’t believe him at first, laughed at him and hung up the phone. Ed Kemper in my opinion is one of the most fascinating people to study. He was a true killing machine. His stature and intelligence was the most terrifying aspect of him.

You know it's fucked up, but Patton Oswalt pointed out the "cool" names actually help get them caught. As gruesome as it may be, HH Holmes has to be my favorite serial killer to research. Srsly, look up videos and documents on him, its *WILD* . He pretty much built his Murder Castle on credit, and never paid it off. He also would hire and fire contractors frequently so no one knew the exact plans of the Castle. He wasnt really "wealthy", he just held a lot of credit and was really good at dodging collectors. Real fucked up dude, straight out of a Poe story.

I used to work at the facility Ed Kemper is incarcerated at. I wasn't on the custody side, but I still saw him every day at work. I didn't know he was a serial killer until I heard a podcast about him and recognized the name. Always friendly, he plays the "gentle giant" perfectly... but you have to remember he's an incredibly intelligent and manipulative person. It's all an act. I didn't like his portrayal in the Mindhunter netflix series, mostly because they made him too creepy; he's not, and that's why he was so prolific when he was active. Despite being a towering, overweight dude with a doofy mustache, he was able to convince young women to be alone in his car with him.

Defense attorneys are not necessarily supposed to convince everyone of their defendants' innocence; they're there to make sure the prosecutor actually has their case straight and meets the standard of proof. Most cases they obviously would like to be able to prove that the person is innocent, but in here with a blatant murderer, their job is just to ensure the courts follow proper procedure with an understanding that the guy is guilty in the definitive rulebook. Without this structure, actual innocent people suffer because courts can just decide arbitrarily when and where laws and due diligence matters.

About Ed Gein, you forgot to mention that Ed wasn’t simply “close” to his mother. His mother was extremely religious and punished him for trying to make friends. She also railed about how all women except her were sinful whores, that she was the only woman he ever needed in his life because the others were “instruments of Satan”. This didn’t make Ed a misogynist, surprisingly, but it did help galvanize an extremely dysfunctional relationship with his mother that she nurtured and encouraged until her dying day. It was emotional incest, most certainly, and it is suspected he killed his brother Henry due in part to Henry becoming concerned with how uncomfortably close Ed remained to their mother even as an adult. She set him up for an emotionally disturbed life in a best case scenario. I feel nothing but pity for him. Horror, but also pity.
