CONCERNING EXCERPT FROM THE PDF BELOW
8.3.5.3 Key Programming (Secure Memory Key)
The bq27546-G1 secure-memory authentication key is stored in the secure memory of the bq27546-G1 device. If
a secure-memory key has been established, only this key can be used for authentication challenges (the
programmable data flash key is not available). The selected key can only be established/programmed by special
arrangements with TI, using TI’s Secure B-to-B Protocol. The secure-memory key can never be changed or read
from the bq27546-G1 fuel gauge.
8.3.5.4 Executing an Authentication Query
To execute an authentication query in UNSEALED mode, a host must first write 0x01 to the BlockDataControl()
command to enable the authentication data commands. If in SEALED mode, 0x00 must be written to
DataFlashBlock() instead.
Next, the host writes a 20-byte authentication challenge to the Authenticate() address locations (0x40 through
0x53). After a valid checksum for the challenge is written to AuthenticateChecksum(), the bq27546-G1 uses the
challenge to perform the SHA-1/HMAC computation in conjunction with the programmed key. The bq27546-G1
completes the SHA-1/HMAC computation and writes the resulting digest to Authenticate(), overwriting the preexisting challenge. The host should wait at least 45 ms to read the resulting digest. The host may then read this
response and compare it against the result created by its own parallel computation.

The issue as it stands is public perception of independent repair. A user has an iPhone XR with a defective/degraded battery that requires replacement. From the user's perspective, all they have is a "service" warning in the battery health app. The user takes the device to an independent repair shop who replaces the battery. Potentially that replacement battery is pulled from an original iPhone XR, sealed in the box. Despite the battery data itself reporting restored health, the user still has a "service" warning. The explanation given to the user from the battery health app is "maybe that repair shop used a non genuine battery". You can be sure if the user then takes the device to an Apple store, that Apple will reinforce that statement with a side of "non genuine batteries do not perform the same way, and could be dangerous". It's not even clear if the independent repairer replaced the battery at all. From the users perspective, perhaps they just took your money. Remember, Apple want consumers to perceive third party technicians as unqualified and dishonest. This will likely lead to a reverse placebo effect of sorts. Technological hypochondria. The consumer may feel as though the replacement battery doesn't last as long or doesn't perform in the same way, because Apple have told them it wont. This is a new level of monopolization. The only way for the user to feel as though the job has been done properly, is to have Apple perform the replacement. Apple can use development tools that they will not release to third parties (intellectual property), to program the key for the replacement battery to the device. Only Apple have the keys documented, and this process will likely lead to data loss for the consumer. But this is the beginning. It is possible for this to cause damage outside of the battery health app. This is why we need to stand up now and make it known that we don't accept, or see any logical reason for this. Let's make this sneaky attack on independent repair well known, before we have to consider what happens if: -The process of issuing a challenge to secure memory and comparing the digest, is back dated to other devices. -An exclamation mark or flashing icon is permanently visible on the devices battery icon, from any app. -A warning message is issued to the user upon boot, and every connection of a charger that "this battery may not be genuine, and may be dangerous" -A permanent or persistently reoccurring notification appears on the lock screen, same as above -CPU throttling is enabled, with many users unaware of how to disable it. This would result in a noticeable degredation of performance post battery replacement. -Flight restrictions are placed on Apple devices with a "service" warning, much like they were with the Note 7. Individuals whom own a device that "requires service", may not be allowed on flights for fear of safety. There are lots of potential scenarios for Apples "next step", and the public perception of independent repair will suffer. If we don't make a big deal about this now, the next move could be even more damaging. But I don't believe this is legal in Australia, and i encourage anyone (Australian citizen or otherwise) to contact the ACCC. We have them to thank for the reversal of error 53. They will fight for the rights of Australian consumers, which in turn gives rights to Apples international customer base.

Ben Duffy I get where the Apple haters are coming from, but there are two sides to the story. 1/ The reason it does not recognize an original OEM battery is because the phone checks this via a chip Apple Centres place on the battery when they change it. There is no conspiracy here, just put the old chip battery on the new one! 2/ The second hand market for iPhones is huge, if you buy a 2 year old phone and someone has replaced the battery with a cheap possible dangerous battery, how does the new buyer, who may have bought this for their child, know if it is a safe authorized battery. There have been many battery issues over recent times, this should be important to a parent? By adding this Apple are giving second hand buyers peace of mind. 3/ The price of getting a replacement from Apple is relatively cheap, $60, what would make you want to go elsewhere fo a slightly cheaper repair? If you have to send off, most of us have a spare phone that we can use for a week or so, the world will not end! 4/ When in warranty if you want to update your battery then sensible to not void the warranty by getting an independent to do it. In Europe that warranty can be as long as 6 years if any defect was a design mistake. 5/ Why are consumers batteries dying so bad. In our house we have three iPhones, the oldest the iPhone 8 Plus is still at 94% capacity and that is nearly 3 years old! If users did not abuse their battery this issue would be far less prevalent. Can we blame Apple for the software stuff they do to stop users doing silly stuff and then complaining it is Apple’s fault? 6/ Reputation, Apple has a right to protect their brand, image and QC, and that is a two way street s consumers get protected. 7/ When you buy into the Apple ecosystem you should be be aware that as a “Luxury” brand it is not the same a buying into say VIVO. The coSt per spec ratio is higher as is the servicing, much like a Mercedes compared to a Ford. Overall I think what Apple does with the battery is good practice. Obviously independents are going to get upset as it effects their business. However, I am sure there are workarounds like becoming certified, it i not much for Apple to ask for, that repairers are certified by Apple so they can be safe, reliable and accountable? Yes, when we buy a phone it is ours to do what we like with, but very few of us will upgrade our battery once let alone more than that, and for a premium product getting it done by an expert, relatively inexpensively with the knowledge that if anything goes wrong Apple are accountable, not John Smith at the local market, will be worth the extra $20 IMHO.

I’m not clear here. This is a conversation about the iOS battery health reporting feature-correct? The replacement battery itself will WORK, as in it charges just fine and reports correct charge to the device. The only thing that doesn’t work is that the iOS battery health app doesn’t know what to do if it doesn’t read the battery key. Does 3utools or other third party battery health assessments still work? I think there’s a huge difference between “the battery doesn’t work” and “the iOS battery health report doesn’t work”
@TheArtofRepair
@TheArtofRepair 4 жыл бұрын
I think the issue here is the perception at the repair shop when you get a new battery installed and the potential future lockdowns. Since the "lock" has been in for awhile, they just now locked the door. Meaning next batteries might not even make it to boot or might give an error on boot if they are not deemed "genuine" It also is weird that another original battery seems to be considered "non genuine" When you get a new battery and it already says "service" on it, thats an issue. 3u Tools does show the proper info, but its also been proven that Apple health, 3u and hardware testers tend to show different info also.

You have mentioned in the video that extended capacity batteries will not work with the original BMS. I just tried this on my iPhone SE 2020, swapping the BMS from the original to a new extended capacity battery. The result was the "Important Battery Message" still appeared. 3uTools reports the same stats the original Apple battery had, so the connection between the BMS and the motherboard is proper. My guess is that the iPhone broke the pairing between the CPU and the battery when it had to reactivate the BMS after the cell had been swapped. What are your thoughts on this? I have seen others report similar issues when replacing the BMS.

I've been thinking about this method for awhile and it worked as intended. I agreed that it is dangerous and will light your house on fire but take your time and be careful. If you got a very good soldering iron, you don't need a spot welder, just tune on high temp on soldering iron. My advise is to try solder old completely drained Nokia battery or any dead cellphone lithium battery for practices. Remember, TAKE YOUR TIME!

While it is possible to solder, its safer to spot weld, for both the protection circuit and the cell, i assume this video will be watched and emulated by techs of a huge range of skills. So i would rather portray a safer method if they are going to monkey see monkey do. If they damage the OG board, they screw the customer. But your right, you can solder it, its just not recommended for most people to do.
@benduffy4223
@benduffy4223 4 жыл бұрын
Actually its both. A bracket/extension is soldered to the protection board. The bracket consists of 2 rounded edge rectangles (presumably nickel) attached at one side as a hinge. The battery tabs are spot welded to the bracket. In normal production, the battery tabs are not soldered on to the protection board. The protection board is prepared with tabs, that the battery is then spot welded to. The battery tabs should never be exposed to the temperatures of soldering. That is only acceptable and safe during the production of the protection boards. This is why the attachment of the battery to the protection board happens in two stages. Take another closer look.
@ChrisLongPhoneRepair
@ChrisLongPhoneRepair 4 жыл бұрын
@@benduffy4223 maybe so Ben but I can confirm Ive done these swaps before with zero issue. Im sure if you just blasted the tabs with heat for too long it would cause issue but the batteries I have swapped showed no damage to cell life or failure due to the swap.

I had a discussion with my friend about this topic. One of things we talked about is the possibility of Apple purposely throttling the iPhone's performance if it detects the battery has been changed by a third-party. Right now Apple isn't doing that and only performing a simple check.The Battery Health system IS designed to automatically throttle performance if the battery has aged significantly. Apple does give you the option to override this and let the iPhone run at peak performance regardless, but will enable itself again if an unexpected shutdown occurs. However, Apple can at any time effectively throttle the iPhone and lock out the option to override it UNTIL you bring it to Apple for servicing. People should not shrug this off and pretend that Apple won't do this because they will. The system is already there at Hardware and Software level. All it takes is for Apple to code it in iOS and silently release it in a software update. And if a customer were to get his/her battery replaced at a third-party shop and Apple releases an update that throttles the phone's performance, obviously they will blame the shop and not Apple. This is the way Apple wants it to be. Screw third-party shops and force customers to go to their own store.

Sorry, but, does SERVICE message on battery settings does drop the iPhone performance? I've read some infos that Appel drops performance from the phone when battery starts to get low. If it's true, does replace a battery without doing this kind of job could turn my iPhone XR into a slow and kind datted XR? Sorry if this is obvious for you guys, but, I do not work or study about Apple stuff often

@TheArtOfRepair I had a similar issue when the earpiece speaker stopped working on the *iPhone 7 Plus.* It was determined out that ribbon cable connector got damaged. It was out of warranty and was repaired by a non-Apple tech. The part was replaced. The earpiece speaker worked again. But *it disabled* its capability to detect ambient light. So the ambient sensors would *not work* at all. Everything else did: front-facing cameras, earpiece speakers, mic, etc. I was later informed that it had something to do with the *firmware and coding.* Apparently everything matches except for those keys. I have iOS 12.4 (latest) software installed in it. I never had it fixed any further. I just have to put up with toggling the brightness every now and then when outdoors. Prior to that, I had the screen replaced (it cracked as someone bumped into me with his suitcase - I had the phone in my back pocket not realizing the screen was out).That worked without any issues. I had the battery replaced as well (as the old one was reading 85% health and was draining rapidly). The replacement battery was actually better as it was *rated at 3300 maH* (the original Apple OEM was *2900 maH*). So the battery also worked. So kudos to that. I *DO* admire Apple for *protecting their licensed parts.* When it comes to battery it’s even more important that they themselves replace it instead of some repair shop doing it cos it’s hit or miss as to what battery they’re actually using. It *safeguards* the consumers - as to not duplicate the issue of exploding batteries like the *Note 7 fiasco* if you know what I mean...
@ericg6421
@ericg6421 4 жыл бұрын
@Chris That's good to know. When I said *"better"* I meant the *3300 maH* battery replacement is lasting me one (1) day and 18 hours on day-to-day use (web browsing, videos, music via bluetooth, email, text messaging, social media, having WiFi on 1/2 a day, etc). The *battery health* was back at *100%.* The old Apple *2900 maH* battery couldn't hardly make 18 hours during the day. The *battery health* was *reading 85%* and was *draining rapidly.* So I'm still happy using the *iPhone 7 Plus* as my daily driver. I will, however, upgrade when the 5G iPhones come out next year. Right now, it just doesn't make sense for me to get a $1000+ phone, when it's still capable of receiving the latest iOS updates. ( *$32* LCD screen replacement, *$21* battery replacement, *$13* earpiece speaker, 8 MP camera, ambient light sensor cable combo)

Way off topic, almost, but the John Deere farm equipment company has been doing pretty much the same thing with their tractors control systems. That's particularly bad since their repair network is threadbare and farmers need them fixed ASAP since they break down when being used on time & weather critical, seasonal tasks. We have to raise awareness of the right to repair movement.

My phone started boot looping after removing screws and peeking inside. I did not take screen completely off. I also put brand new stiff case back on and it pushed both side buttons in simultaneously and when I finally got case back in I tried starting up my device and I’m getting nothing but boot loop! I tried all the volume up/ down / power button 20 secs and still no change. I took it in today to a 3rd party repair shop that specializes in apple products and he seemed baffled because my phone failed to recover 3 different times on 2 different pc’s and even switching the cords out it still failed to recover. After all this being said he wanted to run an apple hardware diagnostics or something and said he’d look into it. After all that being said do you have any advice? I just bought this phone second hand and it was working flawlessly until I had to mess with it! The only reason I peeked inside was because I wanted to see if it had the original battery which it did and registering at 91%. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
