RE is the only company that would do something like that. When Itchy Boots had import troubles with her Indian model RE, they literally just gave her a new one. The rest of the manufactures couldn't care less, they're incredibly greedy, even if it would benefit them. I know a dude in Utah who has personally sold close to 500 bikes in his career an entire channel dedicated to Honda's that he spends his personal money or testing and making reviews of. They won't even acknowledge him. That's how little they care.

Yup. Got one too. Troublefree, compact. If I can nit pick; it’s not too difficult to scrape the pegs and the front brake needs a good lever pull, which will improve over time but will never be sports bike level, yet it will allow spirited riding

I don't believe a word that bike shop said. These Bonneville's are bomb proof motors. If it was rings he would have stated compression test readings. Also the pressure in the crank cases causing it to run rich. This is very incorrect. He needs to take the bike to a proper specialist.

Rings and or Valves. One would have thought valves would have been replaced with head replacement. So after new head. most likely suspect is worn rings. It could be gaskets. should be new gasket. but sometimes still could be a problem. The question was the head replaced with a new or reconditioned head? or was the head just removed and the plug thread problem fixed and reinstalled. which would still have old worn valves and sleeves. So advice is not to bad. The engine is NFG. The cost of repairing the engine properly is probably greater than the bike is worth. Option replace with used engine. Older actual Classic car or bike. rebuilding the engine is worth doing. If you can DIY. I would replace the engine as best option. short of a rebuilt engine. If it was my bike. tearing it to pieces as a project. My wife would be really really pissed. I've got an old Jeep I've been meaning to rebuild for well quite a while. To some extent. Don't mess with it. If its still running. once you start pulling big bits off. the other bits end up causing problems. So fix the the whole thing or don't.

Ohh Freddie, any mechanic can see you coming as their saviour. There is nothing wrong with the engine. I never liked the sound of the original exhaust system. I would have left the aftermarket exhaust. If the cylinders are leaking, then the chap who replaced the cylinder head gasket screwed it up. It’s not a throw away item! It’s your history, your signature, it’s a statement. Get it sorted. Stop being the nice guy.💪💪

Totally agree. Get your new bike, but hang on to the old one. You will be surprised how inexpensively you can fix it yourself. Every rider needs a project bike, and you have one ready made. You know the history and what's been done and that's half the battle! I'd go crazy if I didn't have a project bike to work on over the winter months.....

Your "mechanic" must have X ray eyes to make such a damning diagnosis without even taking off the cylinder head. I would put money of someone at the dealers offering you peanuts to 'take it off your hands' and then repairing it reasonably cheaply and running it for another 30,000 miles. From what you say, you road it all the way back from Morocco without major issues, and only had problems after it has stood in the rain a week. How does that indicate a major engine problem? Also can't believe your rose tinted glasses, looking at obscure makes and believing the leaflet hype, like a 16 year old reading bike magazines. Be realistic. Also can't believe that you overlook the Jap bikes. I did 100,000 miles trouble free on a Honda CB500 from 1976 to 1983, then sold it to a friend who continued to rack up the miles. That bike ran like a Swiss watch and only ever needed normal wear and tear parts. I had the rose tinted glasses once and bought a Triumph T120v (a proper one 1972) and it was a real crock. Vibrated parts off regularly and broke a conrod on the A1, wrecking the engine almost totally. Thats what you call an engine problem. I've run 1950's British bikes but only later as a hobby - not regular transport.

Even if you need a new engine you'll pick one up for around £600. Call on your community for help and a garage space to change it and do it yourself. Lots of used 865 Bonnevilles are out there for under £5k. Don't be mugged by that mechanic who is clearly not interested in helping you.

He is pulling your chain, ask for the compression test results. If the rings were shot it would smoke or would blow oil out of the breather which in your case would probably end up in the airbox underneath the filter. Under no circumstances take a "I'll take it off your hands for £x" offer from him. The conking out is probably an electrical fault that means a few hours with contact cleaner and dialectic grease, taking apart every connector (and switch) on the bike, drying them out and cleaning with contact cleaner and reassembling with dialectic grease. Not difficult but time consuming. Then every electrical component should be checked, alternator, rectifier/regulator, ignition switch, coils, sensors etc to determine whether they are within operating tolerances. If you have a good manual with a good wiring diagram and the performance parameters listed and a £20 ohm meter it is not that difficult. The alternative is to systematically change the components, cheapest first, but that can be a very expensive and frustrating route

Fred, you went to him with electrical problems not engine. He never once mentioned why the bike is not charging. As a mechanic and listening to him on the phone, I can tell he is trying to rip you off mate. I can almost guarantee all you need is a new rectifier. Call the guy who did your head gasket, he will tell you the same. Grab your bike mate and take it home then trade her in if you ain't happy with her..

Agreed, water and electrics don't mix and the chance of water in the engine is virtually nil as he didn't stall it. Worst scenario replace the wiring loom, coils and possibly ecu.

Freddie. We actually met each other in Valencia last year. We were staying in the same hotel for the MotoGP. One of the guys I was with has today listed his Guzzi v7 Special. 23 bike with just 600 miles on the clock. He has a collection of bikes and wants to slim them down a little. Would be a good option at £6.7k

Re. the Bonnie. The mechanic's "diagnosis" was suspiciously vague. Were the spark plugs sooty? Was the exhaust smoking? Was the air filter clogged? Did he do a compression test? Did he re-torque the head nuts? Did he reset the factory values on the engine management unit? Did he even run diagnostics on it? Did he try a known good ECU? It's a bit easy to just say "You need a new engine". Anyone could give that sort of advice; no need to be a mechanic.

Freddie, the Bonneville is a big part of your brand. This is how people recognise you. It is part of the story you tell in each episode. If I were you I would put it in storage with a view to rebuilding it including the engine. It could be a project bike for which you could make a series. The Bonneville is your icon so hold onto it and keep it alive in the minds of your audience with occasional updates. As to the replacement bike, I think you would regret dropping to a 350cc. Those Enfields are beautiful but surely not an only bike. Good luck whatever you decide. 👍

Freddie I’m not a Triumph guy. But I’ve been riding only old bikes my entire riding life, 37 years I think that wrench is totally wrong. Did he do a compression check?? You just got the top end done. Shouldn’t have any blow by. If you did it would be smoking like a two stroke. You got some kind of electrical/ computer control problem. If she’s running, even badly without oil loss your motor is ok. If I were. You I would get a second opinion from a Triumph dealer that can do a complete computer diagnostic. What do you have to lose.

Hi Freddie, a few years ago my local Triumph dealer, gave my 1971 Triumph 650, classic T120R with 5 thousand miles genuine, a once over, as I wanted to get it back on the road, When I went to pick it up he told me that the engine was knackered, I asked why, he started the bike up and at about 3k there was a reverberating sound, which he said was piston slap, he said I will give you a thousand pounds and take it off your hands, I told him I thought it was a very good offer 😉but I needed time to think about it, he said well don't think for too long otherwise I might change my mind ! When I got back home, I saw that the bracket for the horn was broken and it was vibrating against the frame ! 🤣

These modern day mechanics right things off far too quickly nowadays in my opinion, we live in a throw away society unfortunately! I’ve just MOTed my wife’s daily vehicle which is a 2001 discovery with over 200,000 miles on it and it still provides us with great service.. I would think in truth the old triumph has years left in it. I used to change the rings on my old bikes quite often back in the day to keep them running well.. it’s not that big a job but then I’m not up on the modern stuff so much. I’d love to see you back on the old triumph but if not happy shopping, it’s always a nice feeling looking for new!

If you have to skills, tools and patience available to do it yourself then yes, an engine rebuild is a viable option but as you may know Freddie is not exactly mechanically inclined person. Changing an exhaust was already quite a big job for him. Letting a shop do it for you is not cheap so he has to really calculate if doing such a project to an old motorcycle is worth it.

But then again I am an amateur tinkerer with access to lifts and tools in my (not so amateur, formerly a professional car mechanic) brother-in-laws garage. I have been riding bikes for close on 60 years now...and have come across many "experts". The "rings and barrels need doin'...." says it all. Don't forget Freddie, the definition of an expert: "Ex" means a "has been".......and a "Spurt" is a "drip under pressure.." I would agree with many others - make it your project bike. Learn lots / save money!

We have had many bikes and many brands. Now we bought for us first Moto guzzi V7 III with a Mistral exhaust. The most fun bike we ever had. It’s torque. More than enough for a naked bike, very fuel economical and just drives great!

Thoroughly recommend the v7 850. I’ve ridden mine around France and Belgium twice. The nth coast 500. Lake District and Wales all within the first 5 months. Never missed a beat. Loves to sit on 80 mph on the motorway. Nice and light handling on slower roads. Looks awesome and gets lots of comments/ compliments. Absolutely love it.

Freddie, the Guzzi V85TT and V7 have the same engine. I think the V85 is the perfect bike for you and your use. It's good around town and much more suited for longer trips. It has air-cooled engine, which is very simple and bulletproof. It has cardan transmission, making it virtually maintenance free. And an absolutely wonderful chassis, a gem in disguise. Oh and the brakes are the best I've seen on a bike that's not a "track bike". Please test ride it again and you'll fall in love by it again. The V7 shares much of the plusses of the V85, but in a different configuration. The chassis of the V7 is also brilliant (Guzzi are specialists on this very important, but very obscure, component), the brakes are fine but not top-notch like the V85. And I know you love Triumph, but maybe it's time for a change? Can you picture yourself visiting the Guzzi factory in Mandello del Lario, on the margin of Lake Como? Italian alps for a summer trip...

I could not love my V7 more. I have the 2021 V7 850 Stone. I know you love character in a bike, and the V7 is a very characterful engine that runs smoothly and pulls strongly (70 mph in 5th gear at 5000 rpm), and the seat is super comfortable and has plenty of room for you and Monica. I think the Special is even better, with the analogue clocks and spoke wheels, but you can't go wrong with any V7.

Idea. 1. Rebuild series. A weekly episode on rebuilding the engine back to glory as a noob. 2. In meantime buy something else, 2 bikes better than 1. Id go for Kawasaki W650 or Guzzi V7. I've got both. PLUS Triumph should just give you a T100 Or RE give you a Classic 350. No brainer for them.

I'd be keeping the Bonnie even if you buy something new, don't scrap it or give it away for pennies. The bike was running fine before you had the head reworked to fix the striped spark-plug hole so it's possible it wasn't put back together properly or it just needs new rings, which by the way you're supposed to replace if you take the engine apart or at least that's what they did to mine.

Bonnie's NEVER die. They're always worth fixing. Mine was written off after being stolen and crashed. I kept hold of it and had it back on the road in a month thanks to Ebay I do have several other Triumphs but I'm not biased..... I have two Enfields too

Freddie, unless you're buying an RE 350 as a second bike, don't even think about it. Two-up on a dual carriageway or motorway would have the bike wheezing and gasping. The T120 would be fine, the 'Guzzi would be better but the Indian Scout would be the bee's knees.

Freddie, as a previous owner of a speedmaster and being 5ft 7 I would say it’s too small for you. Maybe not on the odd ride but long journeys will be a killer. Also there’s not much comfort for the pillion. I had a rear seat but it was the size of a postage stamp. I honestly think a t120 is perfect for you. You can use your current panniers and it will be more than capable of taking you anywhere. Good luck with your search

Save it as is for now in storage if you can. Maybe he can drain all the fluids, etc. It's not like sitting any longer will worsen her condition. I have a non-running Royal Enfield in my garage that I have a strong emotional connection to. I don't have the heart to fully give up on her or sell as a non-running bike. I'd keep the bike for now and wait it out. See how you feel down the road. Once it's gone it's gone you know

I would only fit a new engine if I knew it was a good one (i.e. from someone you know and trust). You could end up spending a lot of money and end up with an engine little better than the one you have. Big risk! See what Jason will offer you for it as he may be able to use many parts off it.

It will be therapeutic to move on from the bonneville; it hasn't sounded great for a good while. Have a scout round for a second hand low milage engine. It may be worth fixing solely to sell on as px on next bike. I did this with a failed street triple and recpouped over £3k which went toward an Africa twin.

Yes, I would rather rebuild my own engine than take a punt on an unknown one. That's what I did with my R1150RT when it blew a valve. I was given exactly the same advice. I ignored it an had my own engine rebuilt and fettled. It cost a lot of money, but it was all new parts.

I agree - rebuilt engines are a lottery. Unless you know exactly what the history is and that it was done by someone with the right skills - in which case it won't be cheaper than having your own engine repaired anyhow.

Hi Freddie. I enjoy your videos, especially as a fellow Triumph owner. I have to say that I do wonder about your T100 diagnosis: If you had such worn rings and barrels, surely the exhausts would be smoking like a chimney and you'd be using lots of oil? I'm no engineer - but at 66 I have owned lots of bikes and cars! Anyway - I'm very happy with my 2016 T120, which was an upgrade from an OK but not great RE Interceptor. Stay safe and be lucky!

I also agree, What are the compression figures , takes seconds to do ,, Also, The symptoms before were definately "electrical" ,,,maybe the starter solinoid had water in it ,,etc OR , yes solinoid was the starting probs AND the low speed bad running low compression?

The guy who said it needs a new engine is talking nonsense It's clearly an electrical problem. The engine is not smoking it's not misfiring when it does run so I would get the electrics he led out before you do anything drastic good luck All the best to you both.

I am gutted for you Freddie, i do think that the Bonnie is repairable but i get the feeling that you are over it and ready for a change. Watching your early videos got me into bikes and over the last couple of years or so from passing my cbt test and a few months later my full test, i have gone through that journey of finding out just what sort of biker i am. I've just bought a beautiful 19 plate RE interceptor and i couldn't be more content.

Hi Freddie I had the V7 Carbon and I loved it but my wife wasn’t ever really comfortable on the back. So we traded it in for a V85TT in satin black just like the one you were ogling in the showroom ha ha ! It’s brilliant and my wife is happy once again on the back. Quite a tall seating position but you’re not going to have any issues I’m sure. I’m a Guzzi fan, I also have an old V65 I’ve custom built into a flat tracker/scrambler style as a second bike. Been waiting eagerly for this one. While the Super Meteor might not be as good a commuter bike as the Bonneville, the 650 will not be as big as a difference from a 865 compared to a 350. And if you like that Halcyon Blue, check out the new colors on the Meteor, now with spoked wheels. Even more pretty if you ask me.

Based on the type of riding you do the smaller displacements will be a limiting factor. Also, consider the room you’ll need for a passenger. Bikes with a longer wheelbase are more comfortable for two up riding or carrying extra gear for extended riding trips. I have a Harley Ultra, Harley FXR 2, Norton Commando 850 and Triumph Speed twin 1200. Enjoy the Norton and Triumph for shorter solo rides. The FXR for slightly longer rides. The Ultra for extended touring. And based on your size larger bikes with larger displacement will be more comfortable and tend to be smoother running. Good Luck with your hunt.

Yes and yes. My Svartpilen 401 is an absolutely gorgeous bike but I bought it expressly for zippy rides around town and some weekend fun - and definitely not touring. As much as I love it, and as nimble as it is, vibrating away underneath me on the highway at 160+ kph, I wouldn't even consider proper road trips on it, let alone anything those lines with a pillion. Annoying as it may sound, there really is no replacement for displacement - since that's the ground on which you build with a certain type for riding.

Gut wrenching news. I think that unless you need the money from breaking it to sell parts, store the bonnie away. This bike is a fundamental part of your story. Freddie..the speedmaster has the option of forward controls which makes it perfect for a tall rider...I'm 6'4" and had one with mid controls and found it a bit cramped tbh also the pillion seat isnt the biggest...I've just bought a T120 and because I can slide back on the bench seat its perfect 👍

Hi Freddie, this year I downsized to an RE Hunter 350 which for my riding it's perfect and I love it. However, I don't think a 350 would fit your needs as a primary bike. Back in the summer I tried a Guzzi V7 and it felt fantastic to ride with so much character. The V7 Special edition with the beautiful analogue clocks just fits the retro style better than the other V7's. There is also that wonderful shaft drive so no chains to worry about, a real bonus for the long distance rides you sometimes undertake. Can't wait to see what you decide.

If the rings are trashed on the engine, how does the mechanic know? Has he stripped it down to measure the ring and cylinder wear or has he done a compression test? You really need to know what diagnosis work has actually been done to say the rings and bores are trashed.

I like the Bonnevilles, I've owned one and I'll be sad to see yours go, but I think it would be utterly foolish of you to get another at this time. I really don't understand people who get the same bike twice in a row; I've even got a video talking about just that, especially among a lot of the big youtubers who own a bike for two years or so and then sell it just to get the same model again. The one silver lining from this situation is that you're getting a new bike, whatever it winds up being, and that doesn't happen very often for you. You've got to make the most of this opportunity to get a different flavour, a new, revitalised riding experience, both for the channel but also primarily for yourself as a rider. I would also cast your net wider, and older, than you have initially. With the maintenance you do, or more accurately don't do, and with the frequent city parking, the new London location etc, does it not make sense to get something a bit cheaper, still special, but more grounded than an expensive current-gen Speedmaster? Whatever it winds up being, I look forward to seeing it. I do hope that you keep the Bonneville as you say too, and one day in a few years time perhaps bring it back as a custom.

I've been only been riding 54 years and the advice on the engine is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. His advice on moving on is probably the best thing to do because you do not have the time or inclination to get the bike rectified nor keep it up maintenance wise......time to move on. A two year oldT120 is a nice safe choice but oh my gosh a 350 Bullet no way it will to do what you want. The Moto Guzzi V7 is a beauty with charcter and probably a great choice.

Hi, As a Triumph owner myself, I think the guzzi's can't be faulted TBH, If i was bike hunting, I would be eyeing up a V7 850 which seam really good value compared to Triumph and a class above the royal Enfields. I know you are drawn to the RE 350's but for longer trips and carrying luggage and a pillion, I think you will get frustrated. My cousin has the Guzzi v85TT and loves it.

I don’t trust what you have been told to be honest Freddie. Scrapping an engine for electrical problems is unusual. You don’t change an engine if it needs a new set of piston rings it’s a fairly quick job to do. People talk to me about experts but I never believe it when I observe their chat. If you have a proper failure like a cracked head or gearbox etc then I get swapping it but you haven’t got that. I don’t think he has spent time looking at it. I smell a rat

Speedmaster is a good choice. I have a 2018 & absolutely love it. Ive been riding BMW 1200 GS'S for many years & got fed up with the struggle being only 5ft 2 so went for something completely different. I had mid controls fitted & a Corbin seat so now its perfect for me. Good luck in finding your new ride 😊
