I was slightly wincing through the photos not due to being grossed out but I couldn't help but think about how tough it must have been to push through and how painful it must have been, my goodness! Jo is tough as heck, much respect and relief to see her at a place of recovery along side the photos this helped to put my mind at ease while watching seeing the puppies, etc.

Irene, what do you think about Mast Cell Activation Syndrome? My gut reaction says Jo has an undiagnosed connective tissue disorder. MCAS seems to be more common in EDSers.

I'd say this is a great example to show people who believe women exaggerate pain and are overdramatic about medical issues, and who are like "even if we do disbelieve them, what's the harm?". This is the harm. We as a group have been told that we're overreacting to our suffering for our entire lives, so we minimize all of it, even the really serious stuff. Something else to check out is the book "Doing Harm: The Truth about How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick" Sincerely, someone who was once hospitalized for something I was "just being overdramatic" about.

I had foot and let surgery on both legs and feet at age 15. My doc "forgot" about my metal allergy and put in stainless steel screws on one foot instead of titanium ones. I also apparently had an allergic reaction to the iodine they used to clean the areas before surgery. I had been in a cast from my toes to my knees. When they took the cast off, my doctor laughed as I screamed and cried in pain while he peeled off my skin. I hate tht man. Jo, I hope your leg heals well and that this is properly noted in your medical files for future knowledge of doctors.

Yeah like I have an allergy to pollen or something that manifests as a rash on my leg and that is literally so excruciating that I often avoid going outside often. And her thing was like that times 100 with the blisters and the skin falling off and like damn!! Def not an overreaction

Our hospital has signs that say to “speak up” I hope people do and are kind to our overburdened, healthcare workers. Fortunately, I have had very caring and good people. Mastisol is awful!! Mastisol caused an intense allergic reaction on most of my back from my last surgery. When I saw your pics I thought Mastisol strikes again. You described the reaction perfectly. So sorry you had this too. My surgeons comment after 2 weeks of suffering "You don't want that used on you again."

@@jordanlyd8691 I can only speak to my experience. I'm Stage 1B, diagnosed at 45. I'm through 14 of 19 radiation sessions. I've been going every workday. I've got what feels like a localized sunburn, and I'm fatigued. I'm just getting zapped on the breast. I had two surgeries that seem to have gotten the whole tumor out, so this is preventative to keep it from recurring. Good luck to you. Best advice through radiation is moisturize, hydrate, and rest.

Cousin had your symptoms. Didn’t try to sell the therapy. It was only slightly before internet. I sent her castor oil and the wool to use with it to make a pack. Just do it. Don’t have to believe, it doesn’t care if you believe it or not. Castor oil just does. Brings me joy now, was twenty years ago. She had such pain from the burns. The package showed up like a prayer answered. She made huge improvement in an hour. When the wind is at your back, and you can see results …it’s all good and getting better. Pain confuses and humiliates, you can’t think straight. The purpose of the pack is to deliver the oil to keep it against the skin. Soothe the receptors. Attention. Focus. Warmth. Sealed delivery, constant, not windshield. wiper. The wool flannel can be reused, refrigerate in a plastic bag. Wash the area with baking soda water, the toxins, now lifted, have got to go. Do it for a friend. Don’t ask. Do.

I feel for you, Jo! Allergic to many things used in the medical arena: Clobetisol, Hibbaclens, Calamine lotion, Adhesives, many medications. I've had head to toe hives numerous times from medications, and my doctor's office ran out of the zinc oxide dressing for my Unna boot, so we figured no big deal to use the Calamine. My mom had said I was allergic to it, but I'm one of 8 kids and well, she may have mixed up the allergies. Nope, she didn't. That took 2 months to resolve - it was similar to what you show here.

Hello Jo ... I am not disabled but I have really become attached to your channel. I admire your openness and the truth you tell about how your life has changed and how you have had to modify your thinking about how to make your life work after your amputation. I am 75 and suffer from several age related complications and watching your videos has helped me think through how to modify how I do things and how I look at things and made me a better and more adaptable person because of it. I have always been friendly towards "disabled" people but I have become even more open about greeting people of all races, abilities, ages and being more courteous about asking people if they need help before assuming they do and barging in on their personal space or activities. Thank you for sharing the physical and mental roller coaster that is your life and helping us adapt to our own rollercoasters. PS - your fur friends are wonderful.

You are just the coolest! Nurse here so I too find it fascinating. Sorry it caused you so much pain for so long but now you look back and appreciate what your body did for you. Toughened the skin, sent fluids to protect more layers (blisters) and sent you pain messages so you could not ignore the situation. Maybe if that pain pump had worked, your skin would’ve gotten much worse because you wouldn’t have checked on it so early. In any case it is so good to see you smiling again. Peace and love to you

I’m allergic to most things adhesive (wax, certain kinds of plaster, surgical tape) and I also found out after they removed a plaster and found blisters on top of blisters. Nothing as severe as this though!! Grateful you posted this, not only because I’m a nerd and also like to see gross stuff, but also because if I get any surgeries down the line, I’ll definitely be super cautious of Mastisol!

I had a reaction just like that -- full second-degree-burn-lookin', blistery leprosy death zombie leg, on BOTH my legs, from two full thigh to ankle leg braces! I am apparently redonkulously, viciously allergic to neoprene. Orthotic clinic was like "Just wear leggings under them," but it apparently has something to do with the chemical they cure the neoprene with, which off-gasses right through leggings. Leggings which I ended up having to SOAK off my raw legs. The silver lining was that it keeps my insurance from trying to foist cheap over-the-counter orthotics on me (as they're almost all at least partly neoprene), since I have EDS (and an incomplete C4 spinal cord injury), so I'm sually in close to full orthotic body armor. PRO-TIP! Hydroxyzine! It really puts a dent in even pretty severe topical itchy allergic reactions, and also works as an adjuvant to pain meds.

I've only had very mild skin allergic reactions (just itching, no pain) and it almost brought me to tears with how frustrating it was to have no relief from the itching. Like other people said, you're absolutely not overreacting, if anything you're massively underreacting!

Hi Jo, I feel for you because I too suffer from sever reactions to the chemicals used in the adhesives in plasters and dressings. My skin literally SLOUGHED OFF and the pain was incredible… you have my deepest sympathies for all you’ve been through. Any hospital stay I have now has to include special coloured paper bracelets to let the doctors know of my allergy in advance of any procedures. Stay strong my girl you are awesome.

As someone who has multiple allergies to medicines, latex, and food and asthma (the bush fires here in Canada have me nestled in the basement) it is hard to figure out sometimes what you are reacting to. In hospital with pneumonia and pre-injection site they put me on a cousin drug I might have reacted to. Had to keep that line in me inside elbow for over a week in case Ireacted. Just uncomfortable. One day after eating supper I reacted to apples. The nurse came running in and got me on my antihistamine. I was already on steroids. My Doctor kept me in a few days longer. The nurses were trying to kick me out, but he said no. But I always warn medical people of my allergies. Next time I may react to something new. Your number is looking sooo much better. You are a strong woman and are getting through this. Good luck that this is the last surgery you'll need. 😭💜👨🏻‍⚕️🦿❤🧡💛💚💙💜

The human body is just so amazing. Watching your skin heal itself over time left me feeling awestruck and strangely emotional. That said, I’m so sorry for all the pain you had to go through. I really hope things continue to heal and improve as quickly as possible.

I'm glad it's healing well, and that you're feeling better. I've never been squeamish, though empathy causes me to hurt when I see someone else's pain. I appreciate the warnings for your vid, and yes, that really did look like fried sausage. So glad it's doing so much better now - amazingly well. I was honestly not expecting it to look as pink as it did in some pics. But what a horrible thing to go through, not being able to pick your skin! All jokes aside, you are a real trooper for going through this surgery and dealing with this allergic reaction. Sending all my well wishes your way! On a side note, I am probably going to stop my own allergy meds soon. Lets hope my reaction doesn't take yours as an example the moment I quit

I’m also an RN and also gasped out loud as the other RN’s at seeing this, not that I haven’t seen wounds much worse than this but at the sheer fact that you were ignored for so long about this severe burning pain on/under your leg only for them to finally see why. And as someone who has horrific allergic reactions to ANY type of surgical dressings and any adhesive placed after procedures I get it ! and I’m so sorry! It healed up so amazingly well!

Ouch. Glad your doing better!! Good job on not picking it. Edit to add: I recently had 2 femoral osteotomies using a femoral “nail” (nails stop being nails when they are 18 inches long, just saying 😑) and honestly I know it’s nothing like what you have pushed through but watching your vids while healing actually kept me relatively sane. It seems to hit me in waves about the surgeries but hey, if you can do soo much better with a massive operation and follow ups and a blind guy can surf then I really am not going to do anything but be thankful for watching your vids. 😇 (p.s. aside from my wife you have the best legs on KZbin)

As a CCMA and a fellow disabled lady, thank you for sharing with us - but holy hell, Jo! I am so sorry you went through this. Glad to see you’re on the mend. ♥️ I worked in vascular surgery and frequently had patients who were amputees. We used mastisol all the time to hold steristrips on more securely after removing staples or sutures (especially for patients getting staples removed at cast change appointments right after an above/below knee amputation). It has such a strong smell - I’ve often done patch tests on patients to make sure they tolerate it before we try to use it! Chlorhexidine can be very drying, so many people do have a hard time with it. I am truly allergic to chlorhexidine, I always have to double glove when I use it on patients and for my own care we have to use betadine and alcohol instead. Hope for smooth sailing for you here on out! 😊

Challenge accepted. Time to eat lunch and watch your gruesome reaction. Edit: Holy fuck, that was worse than expected. I'm always fascinated with our body's ability to violently attack itself. Did they consider giving you epinephrine to try to halt the reaction? I've deal with severe chronic pain from various health issues, most notably muscle cramps which have resulted in me ripping muscles in half at various points in my life. I've broken numerous bones and have torn my ALC. I've also had kidney stones numerous times. NONE of that compared to the allergic reaction I had in 2008. It resulted in me spending a little over a week with pressure hives from head to toe. It felt like someone was constantly flaying my flesh off the bone. The only relief I found was sitting bare ass naked in front of a fan. I went to the ER three times in 9 days. Two of the times they gave me epinephrine. The third time they turned me away and said they couldn't give me anymore epinephrine without risking other medical problems. Before leaving a nurse told me to go home and take 1/2 box of benadryl. She said it's safe to take and will just knock me out for 12+ hours. 14 hours later I woke up and the reaction was gone.
