The thing about Sid is that he could carry a tune. Listen to 'Sid Sings', C'mon Everybody, Something Else, and here, the backing vocals. Moreover, the viewer is drawn to him. One cannot say that about many bass players. Johnny instinctively knew that the band's center of gravity was shifting. The second yet more immediate problem was that heroin had Sid in its grip and wasn't letting go. Johnny knew this also. Those two factors spelled disaster, so Johnny bailed before it became unbearable. He made the right call. He formed the brilliant PiL, Cook and Jones formed a straight rock outfit the Professionals (great, but not groundbreaking) and Sid OD'ed.
