The Sex Pistols, What a great band what they lack in musical talent they more than make up with their angst distain and anger. Nevermind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols is one of the most important records in rock history. Rotten sang with such raw emotion, Jones riff genius, Sid a fabulous disaster could have been great, Cookie terribly underrated. What they did in 2 short years will be remembered for ever and No,John I don’t feel I was cheated what you gave us is priceless.

Please don't read this, it's too long to possibly be read. "Can't play" in the seventies didn't mean you couldn't *really* play a note. People who take the "never played at all" shit too literally have clearly never spent any time around 70's musicians or fans of progressive rock etc from back then. "Can't play" in 70's terms would cover pretty much all punk music and most heavy metal. My dad and Uncle used to say bar chords were for figuring out the song, not for actually playing. You use substitution chords and triads etc and blend techniques like arpeggios and licks in as much as possible and you only strum chords on an acoustic guitar. If you don't understand this you don't understand what punk rock even is. It's basically exactly everything the average long hair avoided like the plague technique wise. As far as bass goes, the Dee Dee Ramone style following along with the guitar changes and playing with a pick staccato "plunking" in punk, new wave, later metal, and "college rock" was also exactly what to avoid and considered absolute trash bass playing. A real bass line would be more like a traditional bass line and in those terms even a basic version of that (like in Tejano and polka) was called "chicken scratch bass" and was considered a joke that is sometimes what is needed but completely without merit. "Lead" bass players in bands like the Who were "heavy metalers" who were basically almost punk but ultimately respected for their writing and overall skill (as "thats just rock and roll, haha," not serious "music") They were seen as cutting it close. People were very critical, even in punk because the standard was quite high. Music was more vocal accompaniment with lifting floating harmonies than beating strumming pounding rhythm in the minds of people from that time period. You have to get that to understand why punk was hard to grasp for some and exciting and new to others. You also have to get that to understand what it contributed to in later music. 60s bubblegum, garage rock, Heavy Metal, Punk, and Disco all lead away from the floating melodies and harmonies and toward foot stomping beat and full on heavy bass that comes through and delivers. It took awhile but it definitely took over and has never gone away. Sid's bass playing was bad but he definitely played, even though there were times that get over stated were he hardly played or played so bad they turned his amp off. I mean, why do you think they turned his amp off? Oh, he was playing alright, or that wouldn't have ever been necessary. Elvis knew how to play that acoustic guitar around his neck but he didn't do it much, so what? Honestly I think Sid was a way better singer than Johnny Lydon and should have taken over when Lydon left, maybe they could have brought back Glen Matlock on bass? At least for one tour in '79 maybe? Check out Sid Vicious "C'mon everybody" and "Something Else" (I recommend the "video" film versions here on KZbin) for an example of what might have been if you aren't already familiar. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKHEh5mVm7iLpbM kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4TCm62vi5V9qtU
