I have received this email on 2 separate occasions last year and of course ignored it. 1. Serious companies will NOT store your password in clear, they will *hash* it before. I would explain what it is but it would take too much space here. Basically your pwd is encrypted with a one-way mathematical function. Stealing it is completely useless. 2. And to make sure that well known passwords (e.g. qwerty, hello123) are not guessed with something called Rainbow Tables, the password can also be *salted* .

If you're a Firefox user, they have a similar service that also links in with their password manager. I think Chrome has started offering something similar. Lastpass has had this feature for quite a while. I'd say a password manager is a must these days. It does make a bigger target for all your passwords in one place... But this is offset by these companies rarely (if ever) being involved in breaches anyway. It also means, if a randomly generated password is revealed in a breach of any other company, it keeps your other accounts protected. You can also mitigate these with two-step authentication. Sadly, it has been proven this isn't a replacement for a secure password. But it's definitely another tool worth using in addition.

Hi Mike. I'm a postman and there is a scam going round via text message advising people that Royal Mail require a fee for the item to be delivered. They then ask for your bank details and clear it out. I get asked about this every day by confused customers. Perhaps you could shed some light and publicity to this.

P.S: This scam happened to me a few yearzago - I admit I did crap myself at first (NOT because the porn I'd been watching was nasty and/or illegal, I hasten to add), but obviously because I thought I may have indeed been hacked (though the fact they only revealed they had ONE of my passwords kind of gave that game away). However, I hadn't just joined the World-Wide Web yesterday either, & had reasonable faith in my home computer security set-up (though of course I DID run extra virus scans, etc). One thing I DID know for sure, was to NOT to do ANYTHING these evil scumbags requested of me, but it was a slightly nerve-wracking couple of weeks nonetheless!

Scammers don't have the time to sit there and watch what you get up to, so the threat is totally false. These emails could be sent to many tens of thousands of people and in most cases won't even be read by the recipient, as they'll usually be directed to your junk mail folder or even be sent to inactive email accounts. They work on the principal that if you throw enough at something eventually it'll stick. If only one in a thousand people respond, then it's already worth it for the scammer, as it takes very little effort to send out thousands of emails . So when an email of this type uses a time constraint, then this is a completely false threat. However, I have heard of more advanced versions of this scam being discussed on Reddit, where the victim has been coerced into a video call by a catfish to later find out their entire interaction was recorded.
@thany3
@thany3 3 жыл бұрын
These e-mails also usually include something like "if you ask for proof, I will expose you" because such e-mail never contains any proof whatsoever. The absence of proof further reduces how genuine a threat it is. I mean if you really want someone to pay up, you'd include some stills of the supposed webcam footage, wouldn't you.

THIS!! I have had LITERALLY dozens of various forms of this email. I have not been concerned since the beginning because I have done absolutely nothing that they claim I’ve been doing. It makes my blood boil, that they could be getting other people who are not aware of these type of scams.

Honestly, you talk fast enough and write scripts well enough that you could probably fit more videos like this into the KZbin Short format, which I feel would be of great use. People are more likely to watch and share videos they don't feel are unobtrusively long. This might allow your helpful videos reach those who need to hear them, but would otherwise avoid the longer videos you've made.

1. every time i get these, i'm laughing my ass off, because my laptop doesn't have neither a camera nor a microphone (removed) 2. what a shit company google is, for losing our old passwords, and then they ask us to fork over our identity to view " " adult " " videos on youtube either giving our personal ID or credit card (with the comment that they say that legally they can hold unto that information for only 14 days, yeah, like i'll believe that from the company that during their street view campaign stole, information from every net point they could leach on. Can you believe the nerve of these legal appearing thieves?) Those of you that are not "branded" by google yet, can't even see a simple South Park clip of Randy varnishing his meat, saying "aww fuck yeah", because it's under strict "community guidelines". Which is how i found out about this new extortion scheme Google has setup because of a new European level law (including UK, i believe, despite the marriage issues). Christ, what a shit show. Edit: i know it's google that got egg on their face, because the account has never been used for anything else other than youtube and first grade family messaging. GOOGLE, got hacked. Pathetic. This happened twice, because the first time i got that scam message it had an older password, and the next two times i got it, it was the new-old password i put on because i decided to play it safe.

Lol I’ve been getting emails like this for a few years now. I know you said don’t respond to them, but my go to response is always “Oh good, I could never figure out how to record myself while I was having a wank while keeping my tabs open. Glad that someone got it on video, go right ahead and post the video, I’m sure millions of people will be happy to finally see me choke the chicken” Usually doesn’t get a response, but it is always fun when one does respond and keep trying to milk the payment.

I got one of these a few years ago, and knew it was nonsense. However, it did indeed have an alarmingly alarming section about a password, one with a string of numbers I tended to use a lot. It prompted me to change my passwords at all my frequently visited/important sites, which I should have done by that point anyway, so...thanks, scammer? :p

There was once about two years ago where I got this email. It was from an email address that used my same email nickname, but the address was off by one character. He claimed he hacked my computer and sent me an email from my own address. I almost believed it, and I was worried the info might actually be sent out, which would've been difficult to explain to my VERY Catholic family. It was a good thing I looked twice, and even better that I've been avoiding that part of the internet for at least a year now.

There's a more elaborate variation of this as well. You'll get a message from a "girl" on a dating site or social media who'll either send you (usually unsolicited) nudes or ask for some of you (usually after getting your phone number). The next day you get a call or message from her "father", claiming the girl you were talking to was a minor and you'll be taken to court unless you agree to pay for her therapy. Of course, the daughter was the scammer all along, the pictures are of the scammer's ex or screenshots from a payed porn site, and you're not going to court. These scammers are usually from the same country as their victims though, so it can be scary as hell when they call and don't have a thick Indian or Nigerian accent.

When I get e-mails like this, I usually tell them that they sent a blank email. They usually don't reply because it's a bot sending these, but sometimes very rarely a human is sending these manually and they get really confused.

I would add one thing - before deleting said email, copy the bitcoin wallet address and report it (there are at least couple of sites wherr you can do that), why not make it harder for those sh*tbags, right? You would also see other reports for searched/reported wallet there (and see that you're not alone with that bs).
