It doesn’t matter if you’re “self employed” or even a CEO. Everyone works for someone. A CEO reports to the board of the company and is ultimately held responsible by their customers. @Ronnie Zimmerman - In theory, CEOs are responsible to boards and to customers… but only in theory. Most are hired through alumni networks into boards packed by their ex-classmates, just a big network of cronies trading places on a carousel of Fortune 500 boards, ad nauseam, and often these CEOs simply trade on a company’s name and popularity in order to make that company’s product worse and worse, or they buy other companies to raid them for parts, then shutter those companies to write off the loss as a tax break, and they fire anyone competent who’s expensive, they decrease customer service to increase profits… they just overall behave like jackals feasting on carrion. Then, whether they’ve stumbled into a successful firm and somehow managed not to louse it up, or whether they’ve driven a company right into the ground… they collect what’s called a “golden parachute” - a massive paycheck, with bonuses and benefits, whether they’ve succeeded or failed. And more often than not, they’ve failed. But because they’re in the right clique… they fail up! I agree that Anna’s awesome, but I think your assessment of a CEO’s responsibilities in corporate USA is a little rosy. CEOs in the USA are mostly a feckless do-nothing bunch benefiting nobody and accountable to no one.

your doing what you love for work. It's very uncommon for people to be in jobs that they both enjoy, are needed by the world and are reachable. Just make sure you are respected in the workplace and you have clear boundaries on how much time invested. Just think with a PhD you could have more debt as well to pay off. Or you might purchase something that would be more reliable on your job. This so much. As much as Id love to start my own business (like pretty much everyone else), I figured out pretty quickly, that theres no realistic way I can ethically make 21$ an hour from the get go like I did working for an employer in a physical shop. Thats 168$ I made (before tax) working 8 hrs a day or a 9 to 5 job. After tax Id be left with about 126$ working one day. Realisitically, there no way Id earn 126$ on my first day starting up my business. Starting up a business requires some kind of capital, time and effort (thats unpaid) to get it up and running and it usually takes a while before you actually turn a profit, (sometimes weeks or months of unpaid labor.) Youre essentially left to be working for free until you manage to get enough customers/consumers to get your times worth, which you might, or you might not. Its a risk and it doesnt guarantee a steady paycheck. Managing a business is very time consuming and often you just dont get as much out of it financially as you would working a regular 9 to 5 job, which is why some starter ups have to resort to unethical business practices like unethical marketing and advertising to actually make enough for a living, at least at first, and then to sustain it, they have to keep at it. Also with such saturated markets, a lot of starter up businesses just doesnt provide valuable services or products at an affordable price. When you pay for a licensenced therapist or psychologist you know for certain youre getting a service of value, you know youre getting your moneys worth of what youre paying for, unlike with these uncertified so called "life coaches" that charge way more than proper therapists etc. I think the biggest issue is that a lot of these life coaches wants you to pay them for public information thats practically free. Their only value is in gathering the information for the customer, which doesnt require a lot of skill, only time and effort. I wish more people who wanted to start up a business would ask themselves if the product or service or idea they want to sell is actually of value to the consumer and not to themselves.

On the 9 to 5 aspect: I used to work a 9 to 5 job for a couple years before full-time studying. I knew the job wasnt what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but it was a way to save up. And it was great!! I only had to worry about my part that I was hired to do, if I cared enough I was given the chance to do more and possibly apply for a higher position. It was easy to not worry about work 24/7, since work stayed at work. This gave me way more time to focus on hobbies, relationships and even myself (especially my mental health). I got full health insurance for free (even dental care included!), too many employment-benefits to count, payed time off every year... Guess where I worked at? A grocery store. Not even a glorified office job/high position in a big company, and I got all these benefits. Sure, I was not making 5 figures every month, but at least every other aspect of my life was improving. Yes, 9 to 5 jobs dont suit everyone, especially people in the creative field. I would cry in my car before work everyday. There was about 200 people in my office I used to think of them as "complacent" or whatever and my corporation was my enemy. But, I understand now that some people actually like that!!! I make less money now, have no health insurance, but I'm an independent contractor and make my own schedule and I'm studying for real estate. I'm the happiest I've ever been. Hi Ana, It's Isis Breanna here! While I appreciate that you wanted to educate your audience on the dangers of social media, the misinformation in this video is profoundly misleading and unsubstantiated. I'm not sure how long you've followed my platform (or if you ever did), but I'd ask you to do more research before shamelessly slandering my work. If you had followed my entrepreneurial journey, you'd know that when I refer to retiring from teaching, It is because I did in-fact worked my tail-off, start a business, saved & invested my earnings, officially retired from the public school system, cleared out my pension, and then retired to travel the world! Furthermore, I've created tons of content that urges my audience NOT to quit their jobs too soon and when to know if they're ready. You incorrectly stated in this video that I made $10k+ after starting my coaching business. Again, If you had done your research and read correctly, you would have seen that I earned that money selling lightroom presets and Instagram feed templates for companies. This was done with great marketing, tons of networking, and Jesus Christ. The fact that you think this is "highly unlikely" speaks more to the lack of faith you have in your own potential success. I don't want to be a negative nancy here, but please see that making statements like this can discourage other entrepreneurs! You can set realistic expectations for business while also teaching people how to believe in themselves and equipping them with the tools to succeed! Sharing my personal business story on my "About Me" page is not a sales tatic, and it encourages those who can not see the rewarding parts of business for themselves yet. AFTER retiring, and building a travel brand, my fantastic audience began asking questions about how to scale their own businesses! So, I decided to start showing women the strategic steps I took to scale my own business. I then opened a membership that taught business strategies to over 400 dedicated women-of-color entrepreneurs and updated my website to showcase what I do currently (which I suggest all business owners should do yearly)! Ana, I am ALL for women hustling, but as someone who was misrepresented in this video, I feel that this video may be a shady tactic for views, and I do not appreciate the intentional misleading of this video. I genuinely wish you the best and hope that your future continues to be bright! All I ask is that you spend time fully getting to know and understand others before using their names for more views. You have no idea how many people you hurt and possibly discouraged with this type of content. Best, Isis Breanna.

"if you're not able to be happy with 100k a year, what makes you think you'll be happy with 600k" is genuinely the simple logic i wish more people would be able to comprehend. at the end of the day, when there is a huge void inside you that inhibits your well-being, no amount of berkin bags and fast cars would be able to fill it, and the biggest issue is, no body knows this better than millionaires and yet they continue to endorse this "money buys happiness" mantra.

I think the problem with coaches is that there are "actual" coaches that went through training/studies/apprenticeships and are genuinely useful in certain paths of life - they can be helpful in hard life circumstances or in jobs. Now the problem is that "coach" is not a protected term and that's what we see with these influencer coaches. Literally anyone can call themselves a coach (at least in my country). This leads to massive differences in quality of coaching you actually receive and lives off of making profit of already vulnerable people.

I will say that as a self-employed web designer, my life is not roses and sunshine. I spend 8 hours a day M-F working my ass off. I have to do all the advertising, sales, accounting, project management AND actual work which normal companies have whole teams to do. Sometimes I miss having a normal job because I’d be way less stressed. 😂 In my opinion, people that advertise the glamor of being self-employed don’t actually work hard. It seems totally shady to me.

So the main thing I hated was traffic and sitting in an office

Not to mention most of the “helping” professions are definitely working under a “rank and file” system. It’s like these guys have zero idea what it means to serve others. If they did, they wouldn’t assume everyone who works 9-5 works at a desk or for a corporation. Nurses, doctors, teachers, police, fire, social workers, librarians, city services...these are helpers. They have bosses but they are not slaves to their bosses or their jobs. They are committed to the public good-something many these selfish people know nothing about.

I think I had this really skewed mindset of 9-5 jobs for a long time because I always said I “didn’t want to work for a big corporation” (in my head, these greedy corporations probably with a bad boss/leader)... but now I work a 9-5 office job for a state agency and I love it. It might not be life changing work but I try to take pride in doing work that is needed for everyone to function well; I really love that aspect of civil service.

I work 9-5 and I have 0 interest in entrepreneurship and I'm not ashamed to say it. I did also become aware of this new community of "entrepreneurs" that love to shame employees, especially those in MLM companies (aka pyramid schemes) who swear up and down they're "bosses" when they're actually the MLM's customers. I also see the new trend of anyone who sells bottle water putting "CEO" in their social media bio, which I find lazy and ignorant. Companies need employees, we're necessary to make businesses function. I like being an employee; work stays at the office, steady schedule, health insurance, decent salary, yearly 3% increase, paid time off, paid sick days and many other benefits. I work in a hospital and our president makes about 2M a year and guess what he is, an employee. Lots of people in super high-paying jobs are employees.

What upsets me the most is that YT has been pushing coaching ads a lot lately (at least in Germany). There is this one “business coach” that claims you can earn 500000€ a month with an online shop without putting in any work. His grandios plan: buy cheap products and sell them for 20€. And every time I watch his ads I’m questioning if there are people out there that genuinely believe this guy and pay money for his online classes.

As a coach When you were trained how to do sales calls (I spent over $4000 on a business coach to teach me how to have a successful coaching business) You were told to talk about their pain points and talk about what they want and then make it look like you’re the bridge between those two things. There’s a reason why I’m not a life coach and it’s because things felt so in authentic to me. I felt like I was having to force people and manipulate people and find people that were going to give me all their money and convince them to do it. And I always said it just doesn’t feel right and I fell victim to that multiple times! And it doesn’t feel good. I want people to feel good so why would I wanna do that to them? Oh but then I have a bad money mindset! LOL... Every business coach that I talked to, when I told him that my goal was to offer free coaching and low price coaching for people that couldn’t afford it, they refused to work with me because they said there’s nothing they can do for me. If I don’t want a lot of money I guess I’m not worth coaching 😕

All I have ever wanted to do was help people feel better about their lives and their decisions. I ended up hiring a coach for 4.5k who didn't fulfill half of our so called contract and gave me nothing but generic advice... its really sad, what started out as something with good intentions has very quickly spiraled into a money hungry industry that bares very close resemblance to a pyramid scheme. Coaches coaching coaches to be coaches and charging astronomical rates to teach baseline crap. So sad

Hi! African woman here who’s mother was actually born in a country that was still colonised and whose people were enslaved…. Yeah calling a 9-5 “slavery” is a slap in the face to anyone who was (and currently is!) enslaved. And I may be going a little topic off here but usually the people who call 9-5 slavery are communists with terms like “wage slave” or the thought that we have to work or starve. Like people in the global south have long hours, terrible working conditions and are paid peanuts. Modern day slavery also includes these people even if they are paid. So I think it’s interesting that these BossBabes and BossBros are aware of all the misery of corporate jobs but still contribute to it since they have employees themselves 😬 Sorry if this is a little incomprehensible! In regards to business coaches talking about money. It's a marketing tactic. People that want to start a business want to make money. There for they are more attracted to the coaches that are talking about making a lot of money. It's not necessary the best reason to go into business but it definitely attracts people. As for the ideal client avatar. It's just an ideal client. I definitely understand why that sounds weird. When talking about the ideal client wanting them grown up middle class they are more likely to have the income to pay for the services and probably relate more to the person that said it. A lot of these coaches want to coach people that are similar to them. About your 9 - 5 reference. I have a 9-5 and can't stand it (hence while I'm growing my business). They are targeting people that don't want to work 9-5's any more. It's about the strategy. I think you're looking to far into it. I don't think they are talking about the people that like their 9-5's more so the ones that hate their day jobs. As a black woman I don't care about the slave reference. I wasn't a slave and don't get caught up in words. They only hold value if you give them value. People of color weren't the only ones that were slaves in history. Modern day slavery is child sex trafficking and that's just sick. I will go back to the whole 9-5 thing though. For people that hate their 9-5's they may feel like it's slavery. Granted that's a very entitled mindset and they should practice some gratitude. I'm just saying that's how far out society has come. Which is pretty sad. The most important thing people should look for when hiring a coach is their qualifications and references. If they don't show those things don't trust them. Did they go to school for this? What experience do that have with this? What will you benefit from by paying them? Overall this a great video and it's nice to hear how some of the industry is perceived. I just wanted to answer some of the questions you asked in the video.

Completely agree on what you’re saying about the 9-5 thing. I had a call yesterday with a relationship coach who literally yelled at me for not acknowledging the pain I must still feel for being so traumatized by the narcissistic relationship I'd been in and basically accused me of lying about my sobriety because she didn't believe someone could become sober on their own..well, I'm very proud to say I DID do it on my own, after a 20 year addiction I've been completely sober for almost 2 years and have done extensive self healing work on myself to work thru past trauma. I might also add that her 'course' was over 3000 bucks for 90 days...

Black woman here! To respond to your comment about the "slave" terminology, I've actually never thought of it as offensive just because the term "to slave over" something is so commonplace in current linguistics. However, I have seen other business coach influencers of color use the "slave" thing as a way to rope in clients of color, ie. "Our ancestors weren't physically free, but we aren't mentally free as long as we're slaves to the corporate system" etc. But I also agree with you that comparing a 9-5 job with pay and (optimally) benefits and such to actual chattel slavery is ludicrous. So yeah it's just trash from all sides

12:44 - something that I experienced with a "coach" and micro-commitments - which I now know was what she was doing - was that she thanked me (sincerely) every time I said yes. Can I have your email? Yes. Thank you so much. Can I have X, Y, Z? Yes. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. By the time you're asked for that $4,000 or whatever amount, you're programmed both to say yes AND not to want to disappoint someone who has been so appreciative of your agreement all along. It's really hard to say no, especially when you've come to them for coaching. You're caught between feeling obligated (because they also let you know they're taking their time to meet with you) and not wanting to disappoint someone you've (apparently) made so happy by being so agreeable. There's a creepy controlling aspect of that relationship that borders on some abusive relationships between domestic partners.

Hey girl, keep it up! Nothing should be free of scrutiny. Scrutiny can be frustrating to go through, but we should live in a transparent world. Especially if it has to do with business.

FYI: Client Avatar is commonly used in marketing, they didn't make that up. It is the blueprint of your ideal/ exact/ average client for a specific thing

This is the kind of thing I spoke about in my comment on your last video about MLMs I think. It really is quite pyramid scheme like and just gives actual coaches, who want to help people, a bad name. I'm trying to figure out how to market myself as a life coach without having all this gross stuff associated with my business. It really is sad that coaching is becoming more about 10k months than actually helping people push through blocks and reach their goals, whatever they may be. One thing I would say is that it is possible to coach people on *almost* anything IF their blocks are personal rather than logistical and it's not the coach thinking they know everything. Most people struggle with success because they are in their own way, so helping them overcome these blocks helps them with their overall goal. If somebody has a problem that is actually external then yes, you will probably need a mentor with experience in that area. Great video as always x

Love your videos, Anna! Thank you for you thorough research and well thought out opinions! If I may offer something for you to consider: many business owners (especially those of us with ‘real world/not just online’ businesses) strive to make $50k months and strive to make even more every month after that. But that’s because we love our businesses and being able to invest back into our businesses. It’s not about being rich and especially not about looking rich. It’s about working sooo extremely hard to build something beautiful with nothing but your hard work and innovation. Money doesn’t exactly bring happiness, but it brings security. But a business you love gives you a life. Best wishes 💕 ps: I was super excited when I saw this video pop up! You’re a super cool girl!

And real business owners don’t hate on people who work 9-5 jobs. We employ people who work 9-5 jobs. They’re our coworkers and we care about them!

But do they really make a six figure income? I don't really think so. They remind me of all of the other 'gurus' that were caught faking their lifestyles.
@MrsDaedalus_3 жыл бұрын
Most of them don't. Or at least they make it in the first six months and become some sort of Prada woman and then they start to struggle once they raise their prices to a atrocious amount. I know someone who is in this position. She is a Psychic business coach and has become extremely entitled just because she got on Yahoo business and Forbes magazine. 🤦🏻♀️

Hustling 24/7 sounds much more like "slavery" to capitalism than a 9-5 job tbh

I was curious and had time so I took an influencer course to see what they sold people. They literally said that the whole purpose of creating a community was to make money, and to create fans who would buy anything from you. This was a travel influencer course and they said to just use unsplash stock photography on Instagram accounts and build it up that way- so, lie? The goal was to not only sell to them, you can sell their commitment to you to sponsors who will pay money for you to sell to them. Anyone who is successful in the "influencer" sphere of coaching on Instagram is just cultivating die hard fans and building community for no other goal than getting their money. It's honestly tragic.

I've noticed that people often confuse 'being wealthy' with 'being financially stable' and these are two different things. Being wealthy is being able to afford whatever you want and being able to do whatever you want (which tbh I could see getting very boring if you're just able to have whatever you want when you want it, I used to be a waitress for rich people and this was a common factor that they were all so BORED). Being financially stable is knowing if something bad happens, you have savings or support that will get you through it, and you're able to save money for these rainy days or things you really want. When you're wealthy you're just able to do it. At that point, you're just chasing a higher number because you've decided it's worth something to you, and once you get there, it's time for a new higher number. It's an endless cycle.

The most annoying of these "business" coaches I have ever come across is a person who runs a stoicism page on IG. He makes announcements that he wants to have one on one sessions with people to help them achieve their goals, fix their mindset, what have you. And of course at the end he is happy to tell you yes, he would love to work with you. It's only $200 a week for a six week mentoring program. It's just so weird. Just be upfront with what you charge and what you do.

Anna as a person of color i feel the same way. Getting paid for hours you work is in no way the same as slavery. I get what they are saying, but they can use a different figure of speech. Ps: I'm obsessed with your videos. 💛💛

So many good points made here!!! I agree- what is with shaming people for working 9-5!!!!???? Jesus. They think regular people are so lazy- not everyone desires to be rich. Not everyone wants to be shady and manipulative. Some people are honest workers. They should be jealous of us!

the ICA “character” is actually really common in data analytics, we make them in our classes. obvi they’re using it in a totally bizarre way- usually we’re trying to market paper products or whatever to these people, not lifestyle changes
